Analogue artifact estimation
Hi List, Just batting a few ideas around here, but would it be possible to include in to the codec, estimation for common video artifacts that occur in the analogue world? For example, anything that's gone through a composite stage will likely have dot-crawl and false colour - if we can recognise this effect in the encoder, we can treat it as a special case. Other artifacts that come to

How do you run swat in forground mode?
Is there any way to run swat from the command line instead of starting it from inetd? I'm trying to add some features (mostly, I want to make a backup of the smb.conf file before commiting a new one) and I want to run swat from inside of gdb. Is there a way to start swat in the foreground and have it listen on port 901? Thanks in advance, George Cebulka Senior System

Video codec
Hi, I guess this is a good time to start putting together a wish list for a video codec. I see that for audio the compression is around 10X for reasonable quality. I am sure this will start its own thread of conversation. For video you can do 40X fairly easily and the big task is to go to 80X or 100X with reasonable picture quality, say, a peak luma SNR of more than 30 dB. Uncompressed

Theora vs MPEG vs H264
Hi all, I have to compare the theora codec with MPEG and H264. I was googling and I found that the PSNR is a common used parameter. How can I do this with Theora? A comparison of VP3, and two MPEG-4 variants
a couple points before I look at this too hard: "For VP3, since you can't do a constant quality encode" what? that should not be the case. Could be a QT-specific bug. Theora at any rate is certainly capable of doing constant-quality encode. This probably explains your standard deviation complaint -- VP3 is running a rate control alg, where the other codecs are just shooting for

Fixed Quantizer - Fixed Quality
Here's the problem: > 2) Encoding with rate control as in single pass "Bitrate > control" will not > lead to better quality than fixed quant (with the right value > of the fixed > quant). Ratecontrol doens't know anything about "quality". It > will try to > reach more-or-less CBR. > > But somehow this is not a fair comparison, because

search path for attaching packages
Several of us locally are puzzling over the following problem: We have a central repository of R packages on our linux system. Occasionally, we'd like to install a different version of the same package (such as making updates to the survival package before it is released to the larger group, or a downloaded beta version). When using the library function, it appears that lib.loc is not

Questions about AGI and Wildcard boards
Hello all :) I've just been handed a project that I need to get working pretty quickly. Basically I have four "analog DID trunks" for incoming only calls coming in. I know that these are Loop start with Wink start, and that after wink they send a 4-digit id number. Is this something that the Wildcard boards are able to handle and that Asterisk could interpret? The digits

ffmpeg/ffmpeg2theora &vhooks
Hi theora-list, I'm involved in in a project to redistribute C-SPAN's floor footage from the US house and senate that we're capturing and converting*. This footage is in the public doman, however there's a C-SPAN overlay which is a registered trademark - we're having to overlay a "public domain" graphic on top of it. We're currently doing this with

OT: Latest Linux Real player
Hi: I know this is off-topic, but figured someone here would know, particularly given Xiph's involvement in Helix. Up till now I've used TRplayer <http://linux-speakup.org/trplayer.html> to play Realmedia content. This is because, as a Blind person, I've no need or desire for X11, and TRplayer uses the Realplayer libs without all that X overhead. but now I would like to play

VM Creation Timestamp
Hello, Is there any way to query libvirt, ideally through virsh CLI utility or similar, to get a timestamp of when a VM was created. Or to put it another way, a timestamp of when a domain's UUID was allocated. Many thanks, -- Tony Atkinson

Default Hidden Disk Shares
Windows automatically creates an Admin level disk share as \\server\volume$ <file:///\\server\volume$> . Can anyone tell me if Samba automatically does the same without having to define these in SMB.CONF? Vignettes with long compute time
Is there a way to include the compiled version of a vignette in the doc directory but mark it to NOT be rerun by CRAN??? I think I remember that this is possible, but have forgotton how.?? Confidence Bounds on QQ Plots?
What's the current best wisdom on how to construct confidence bounds on something like a normal probability plot? I recall having read a suggestion to Monte Carlo something like 201 simulated lines with the same number of points, then sort the order statistics, and plot the 6th and 196th of these. [I use 201 not 200 because quantile(1:201, c(0.025, 0.975)) = 6 and 196 while

Keyframes
Hi all, First of all a big thank you for your work. I would like to know what is (could be) the best (optimal in a psnr and/or subjectivity sense) maximum distance between keyframes or is theora using a good heuristic change scene detection mecanism? Does it really matter to theora as with mpeg4 part2/10? Thank you and keep up the good work -- Josh

Random Coefficients using coxme
Hello, I was hoping someone could answer a question for me that may either be statistical or script related. I don't come from a statistics background, so I am not positive if I am using the correct nomenclature or even the correct procedure. Is it possible to model "random coefficients" in a mixed effects cox-regression using coxme from the Kinship package? For example, using

Slowdown on lots of motion
I'm playing the "Honey" movie (both Honey-small and Honey-large) and I notice significant slowdown during periods of lots of motion (when the camera shakes, when the first man hops into bed, when people turn around and approach the camera, etc.). The audio plays smoothly all the time but when there is a lot of motion, the picture freezes and resumes when there's less motion.

Is mount_smbfs broken in 6.1-PRERELEASE?
Anyone know if mount_smbfs is broken in 6.1, I'm trying to run this: "mount_smbfs -I 192.168.1.2 //nbritton@192.168.1.2/music2 /mnt/network/music/" And then it asks for my password, I type it in, and then I get this error: "mount_smbfs: unable to open connection: syserr = Authentication error" I've had this same problem on another 6.1 box too... I can run this same
