libtheora 1.1alpha2 (thusnelda) release
I'm pleased to announce the second alpha release of our next
generation encoder for the free Theora video format, codename
"thusnelda". The second release incorporates a number of changes which
improve both compression efficiency and execution speed.
This release includes working MSVC project files, but the assembly
optimization hasn't yet been ported, so performance there will

RFC: I would like to contribute with SoC
[Resending since I sent my first mail before subscribing and I think
it didn't went through. I apologize if you got this twice.]
Hello everyone,
I would like to participate as a student in google Summer of Code and
I was very excited to discover that Xiph is one of the mentoring
organizations, because I am a big fan of both Vorbis and Theora.
So I would love to contribute to a Xiph.org

Update on HTML5 video support in browsers and websites
FYI, Anne van Kesteren (he's an Opera developer) has written an update
about the state of the HTML5 <video> element in browsers and big
websites:
http://annevankesteren.nl/2009/05/web-video
Two bits from the post:
1) the YouTube demo uses the H.264 codec, but I guess this will
change if they want compatibility with Firefox 3.5;
2) Chrome uses FFmpeg for the decoding; can this

[ANNOUNCE] Unofficial icecast-kh and libtheora Debian Sarge packages
Hi, I hope this is useful for some of you:
I'm just finished building unofficial debian packages for icecast2 and
libtheora for Sarge (stable).
The idea behind this is to keep all the servers which take part on the
GISS stream-ring in sync, running the same version of icecast2 kh
branch, thus having a common ground for testing and debugging, and stay
always on the cutting-edge of

yuv - rgb conversion without contrast decrease.
Hello list,
When I convert an yuv pixel into rgb using the recipies in
http://www.fourcc.org/fccyvrgb.php I get an accurate color conversion
but the contrast seems to be decreased. If i write, e.g., the pixel
directly into an sdl yuv_overlay, I get a well-contrasted frame,
however, if I convert the pixel to rgb and call SDL_MapRGB, I get a
contrast-decreased frame.
Thanks,
Ribamar

python: listing samba shares
I've been googling that for a long time, but couldn't find an answer.
I also checked the python-samba Debian (ubuntu) package contents and
even compiled samba 4.0.0 alpha8, and checked its python libraries, but
couldn't find anything regarding viewing the shares contents there.
Is it possible to list samba shares and their contents of a particular host?

Freedom-friendly video hardware community
Our discussion in the "Theora Camcorder" thread has been great, but I
didn't see a direction evolve for action yet. So, I'd like to propose
the creation of a community website that will be focused specifically on
this kind of thing, partnered with the Xiph Foundation. I'm also more
than happy to host said website, as I have more than ample server
capacity for that.
I just

samba4 + ubuntu 10.0.4

on my Ubunut 10.0.4 Lucid server. For anyone to replicate this, install
samba4, import the DisplaySpecifiers from source and edit

setup path;

Ogg is great!! Tools: ffmpeg2theora, oggz
Hi, I just wanted to say that I've recently become a fan off the ogg movie format. I haven't really done much with video before, but I recently got a Canon DSLR which can record HD movies at 30 fps, 720p. The resulting files are great, but too large to share over the web.
After trying a few different encoding tools, I quickly found that ffmpeg2theora is super easy to use, gives good

Bug#383793: libtheora0: not 64-bit clean
Package: libtheora0
Version: 0.0.0.alpha7-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch
The theora_unpack_comment casts a pointer-to-int to a pointer-to-long,
which breaks badly if ints and longs are different sizes. The attached
patch fixes this.

Windows command-line transcoder for Theora
Hi All,
Should anyone be looking for one, here's a DirectShow-based command-line
transcoder for Theora:
http://www.eddiana.com/?totheora.html
It can do basic video transcoding, as well as scale video, watermark video
with a graphic, grab frame stills, capture from video sources, and perform
a couple color transformations.

Choppy video with alpha7
Hello,
I use my system for time-shifting local TV and I usually re-encode the
capture card's MPEG2 into theora to create much smaller files. However
since upgrading from alpha 5 to alpha 7 I can no longer do this. The
problem seems that the bit rates are too high and the resulting files
are unplayable (tried mplayer, vlc, and theora_play).
I've built the alpha7 libtheora rpm (using the
