Fwd: Re: [Olpc-open] XO review & Theora
As far as video playback is concerned, it seems to mostly come down to how the video is compressed - although Gnash (the open flash player) still has a ways to go to play flash media as well as the closed source flash players. For the Colingo activity and library, we've found it very difficult to find optimum settings for flash and instead have decided to go with Theora. We've managed to

The XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program
There was recently a question on the R-help list about the eee pc. I had a related question about the XO laptop from OLPC (laptop.org). Has anyone looked at the development environment sufficiently to determine if it would be possible to create an executable image for R? The laptop itself only supports Python, Javascript, etc. but it is running a real Linux operating system.

Theora 1.0 final release
Theora is a video codec with a small CPU footprint that offers easy portability and requires no patent royalties. While the Theora bitstream format was standardized in 2004 and our beta releases have been used by millions, this 1.0 release is an important milestone reflecting the maturity and stability of the Theora codebase. A number of leading multimedia web groups already support Theora.

Theora and OLPC
Hi guys, My name is Adir. I'm a Google Summer of Code student, and in addition to that I will be working both with Xiph.org and with OLPC on optimizing Theora's performance. I'm in the list to get a shiny B4, but at the moment I can't do anything since sending the laptop to my place involves some difficulties. Until I get the laptop, I would like to hear from any of you, XO users

Re: DSP stamp
Yes, the Theora codec is based on VP3, which is an earlier version of ON2's VP6 codec. Theora is currently at its alpha 3 release, and is stable enough to have been used already for streaming live video from a number of conferences, and for encoding several videos that can be found at www.theora.org. Development has progressed to the point that the value of the codec can be seen. That

Wikipedia plots and tables?
Hello, All: What facilities exist for plots and tables of data in the standard MediaWiki software beyond the obvious standards? The standard MediaWiki tables and graphics capabilities seem to me to be rather clumsy, and I wonder if I'm missing some available extensions? The standard MediaWiki tables are described in a Wikipedia article on "Help:Table".

CPU with integrated GPU
I was reading recently that a modern CPU can execute 10 billion instructions per second, while a modern GPU can execute 1 trillion instructions per second. Intel anticipates that by the 1st quarter of 2011, more than 80% of their market will be i3 and i5 chips which have an integrated GPU. Does/will theora make use of this for encoding and decoding video? Regards, John Kintree

<video src="*.ogg">
When I tried to view Basil's video streams yesterday, it worked with Firefox 3.5.x on both Linux and Windows, but failed with Chrome 3.0 on Windows XP.? I get opposite results with http://www.citizenofplanetearth.org/citizen.ogg The only browser I've tried that plays that video is Chrome 3.0 on Windows XP. The <video> tag I'm using is about as simple as can be. <video

How can I change the localSID for a SAMBA Server?
Hi Rowland, We need to change the SID on a standalone server because it needs to also act as a File Server. The authentication comes from LDAP, and we have existing entries in LDAP for SID of the domain. Instead of change all the SID in ldap, we would like to be able to change it on the server. Hope this helps. Thanks, Byron -- *Byron Bogaert* *IT System Administrator* Wikimedia Foundation

cwilcox - new version
I am a newbie to C (although I did some programming in Perl and Pascal) so forgive me for the language that follows. I am writing because I have a question concerning the *implementation of *(the internal function)* cwilcox* in https://svn.r-project.org/R/!svn/bc/81274/branches/R-DL/src/nmath/wilcox.c. This function is used to determine the test statistics of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test.

mass conversions
I'm working with Wikipedia projects, and have several thousand small sound files to convert from .ra to .ogg Vorbis. (The wikimedia commons accepts *only* Vorbis sound files, iirc, and the Wikimedia Foundation strongly supports the open standards.) The problem is, I cannot find a conversion utility for total newbs on OSX. Probably I just don't know where to look. Can someone suggest a

Who's developing mwEmbed?
Recently I found out about mwEmbed[1] which seems to me to be a great tool to embed theora videos with a fallback mechanism in place and a really smooth user experience. Since I am testing the tool for use in my blog and other websites at the moment I would like to know who is actually developing that tool and where to report bugs. (e.g. it doesn't work yet in Opera 10.50 which is a

fill map with gradient: package?
Hi, I'd like to fill an existing svg (or png) map with gradient colors. In detail: The file http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Karte_%C3%96sterreich_Bundesl%C3%A4nder.svg should be filled with the population density data from this table: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96sterreich#Verwaltungsgliederung choosing the right color saturation (or whatever).
