Model averaging with (and without) interaction terms
I?ve used logistic regression to create models to assess the effect of 3 variables on the presence or absence of a species, including the interaction terms between variables and model averaging using MuMI: model.avg The top models (delta<4) include several models with interaction terms and some models without; model weights are quite low for all models (<0.25). My problem is that the models

lme help configuring random effects
Hi Everyone,  Sorry to ask what I think is a basic question but I really haven't found my answer yet in the archives.  I am trying to run a mixed effects model in R using the lme package. My experiment is such that I am interested in the effects of Temperature (2 levels) and Species (3 levels) on Growth. I collected individuals from three populations within each species. Because individuals

Mixed Models: Contribution of random variable to final estimate
Dear all, We want to test if the invasiveStatus is predicted by the amount (quant) of animals arriving to a country of a certain species (taxonid). We are using lmer to perform the model. The model is: lmer(invasiveStatus~I(log(quant+1))+I(log(inDegree+1))+(1|taxonid)+(1|country), family=binomial, data=td), where invasiveStatus is a binary variable, quant and inDegree are integer variables, and

Error in mer_finalize(ans) : Downdated X'X is not positive definite, 8.
Dear All, I have conducted an experiment in order to examine predation pressure in the surroundings of potential wildlife road-crossing structures. I have documented predation occurrence (binary?) in these structures and calculated several possible explanatory variables describing the spatial heterogeneity in several scales. At the landscape scale I have calculated the percentage of different

Confirming my understanding of an ipf log line
Hi list, I saw this in my ipf.log (using ipfmon): 18/05/2004 15:57:21.092537 fxp0 @25:1 S w.x.y.z -> a.b.c.d PR tcp len 20 (40) frag 20@8 IN where : - fpx0 is my interface connected to the outside world - w.x.y.z is an IP not related to any system under our control - a.b.c.d is the public IP used for NATed traffic from our LAN. - @25:1 is : @1 block in log quick from any to any with short

Confirming kerberos for upcoming OpenSSH portable release.
O.K. I know it was too late to make changes for the next release, but thankfully there werent any changes needed. Kerberos over ssh protocol 1 worked out of the box from CVS today (2002/10/04-14:30) The krb5 patches we were using (I think from Olaf K) was all in the code. The only thing I had to patch to get things working was removing the scard-install from the Makefile.in The compiled code

Confirming grub installation
I have two drives in a software mirror. Other than setting the bios to boot from the second drive, is there any way to confirm that grub is installed properly on the second drive? -- Bowie

confirming behavior of "by"
Hi, I'm using "by" to summarize by multiple groups, and want to extract the returned into a pretty dataframe. I'm trying to find a simple way to name the rows of the data frame. I'd like it to be something like index1.val1.index2.val2 where the index1 and index2 are the names of the indices and the val1 & val2 are names of possible values of the index. (the

Confirming Multi-Processor
I have a test bed server that's pretty old- PIII Dual 550. I've done yum update kernel-smp and when I run cat/proc/cpuinfo it lists both processors- is there anything I need to to to confirm that it's fully utilizing both processors? I ask this because under the old OS (Fedora Core 2) I always saw an error message at boot that said something about operating in single-processor mode

confirming that a model instance was correctly created from POST params
I''m wondering whether I''m wasting my time trying to verify that an addition I''ve made to legacy code is in fact setting a new attribute on a model. Substruct''s (http://dev.subimage.com/projects/substruct) OrderHelper contains this method: 1 def create_order_from_post 2 @use_separate_shipping_address = params[:use_separate_shipping_address]

ZFS development moving behind closed doors
If this information is correct, http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=133043 further development of ZFS will take place behind closed doors. Opensolaris will become the internal development version of Solaris with no public distributions. The community has been abandoned. -- -Gary Mills- -Unix Group- -Computer and Network Services-

Off-Topic: Crime Statistics Don't Pay
WARNING: COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC -- Nothing to do with R. I thought readers of this list might enjoy the following. The link to the full article is at the bottom. I hope this is not "too" inappropriate. ------- Overconfidence in crime statistics doesn?t pay. In a new study, a team of criminologists makes the case that reported crime rates should acknowledge uncertainty in the data. The

Synchronizing a table to a spreadsheet
Hello all, As much as I hate saying this, I would like to maintain 2 copies of some data, one copy in the form of a table in a database, and one in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately, either or both copies may be modified, so I need some way to synchronize the two, much the same way as a contacts database might be synchronized between a PDA and a desktop application. I am curious to

Error in basehaz function ?
Hello R-users. I believe that the way basehaz (in the survival package) compute the baseline hazard function is false. I come to question this function when it gives me hazard probabilities greater than 1. Looking at the code I think I've localised the error : hazard probability is computed as : H <- -log(surv) but it seems to me that hazard probabilities is rather an instantaneous

SELinux threads, cynicism, one-upmanship, etc.
After reading through the various SELinux threads, I really became quite perturbed. I mean, really quite perturbed. As an IT Director (and the entire IT department, currently), if I were hiring a sysadmin I know for a fact that someone whose first response to a question on why something doesn't work is 'turn it off' would not get a job here. Neither would a sysadmin with as much
