WINS Server TIme out registering IP
I am seeing the following messages logged every 20 min on a Centos 5.5 Samba 3.5.7 (SerNet RPMs) PDC. wins server = yes is set and the 172.17.1.50 address is the address of the PDC. From a Windows client perspective the the domain is functioning as expected. There is a Samba BDC and mulitple Win2008 R2 member servers in the domain. Are they anything to be concerned about? Slightly OT: Browsing issues with Windows 2003 Server, Win 2K server and Windows 2000 clients
Hi, everybody: Forgive me for bringing this to you. We normally use Samba servers but are dealing with a situation involving two Windows 2003 servers and browsing, and the truth is, I can't think of a better forum to bring questions about browsing. We have the following situation: Domain controller is a Windows 2000 machine at 192.168.0.100 The backup domain controller is a Windows 2003

Need Help Getting Windows XP To Use Samba Properly
Hi everyone, new to the list. My apologies if this issue has already been covered, but I am having the following problem with Samba: Using Windows XP as a client, I am trying to see a Solaris system as a server. Solaris is running Samba 2.4.2, and Windows 2000 sees it as a server without any problems. Windows XP, however, generates the error "The network name is no longer

static wins entries -- entries change after restart of corresponding Samba server
I am trying to use static wins entries, as stated in the Official Samba Howto Collection. One Samba server (VServer) is with wins service enabled. Another (Server1) is not, but it has the wins server in its smb.conf. When I set wins.dat at VServer: "SERVER1#00" 0 192.168.6.231 192.168.1.231 66R "SERVER1#03" 0 192.168.6.231 192.168.1.231 66R "SERVER1#20" 0

WINS server 127.0.0.1 timed out registering IP
Hi all. After set up a BDC, I found a weird problem on my log.nmbd file, the case is that my nmb (on BDC) is not able to connect to the local wins "server", just receive a time out . I set the wins support = yes which is the only mandatory parameter according to samba doc. I tried to shut down the firewall even. The log output is: === ....... === become_logon_server: Atempting

WINS server looses election irregular in a heterogeneous network
Dear Samba-Users, I have to administer a Samba WINS Server in a heterogenous network. It's a student hostel with about 200 mixed (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) computers. We have a DHCP, which delivers the WINS-Server address to the clients. I don't have access to the clients. The problem is, that the WINS-Server (Samba 3.0.27) looses the Master-Browser election irregulary. I can't

Hi, This is a question regarding WINS in Samba 4 I need to add a permanent record to the WINS database in Samba I'm using Samba 4.1.17+dfsg-2+deb8u1 in Debian 8 According to this document: https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba3-HOWTO/tdb.html There are two files where the WINS records are stored: wins.dat which is re-created upon restart, and wins.tdb which is meant to be the

Static WINS entries
Is it possible to manually add entries to the WINS database on a Samba nmbd running as a WINS server? Alternativily could I get the WINS nmbd to use DNS for hostsnames it can't resolve using it's own database. I have several NT servers that seem to just vanish from the db after a while. One of my 2.2.3a boxes also did this for a pastime. Whilst I can do nbtstat -RR on NT or restart

Problem with static WINS entries
Hi! I need to add static entries to my Samba 3.0.9 WINS server but I can't. Let's explain: The "Samba Collection Howto" chapter "Network Browsing" , section "Static WINS Entries" tells that I can edit my "wins.dat" file (/opt/samba/var/locks/wins.dat) to set the TTL of some entries to 0 . No matter if I edit the TTL of some existing entries

limiting netbios browsing
Given a DC environment where very few (1-3) hosts actually need to be discovered via browsing is there a good way to limit what is browseable? I'm thinking of something like a read-only WINS - where WINS provides only those servers that need be contacted and doesn't allow client registrations. Such as a wins.dat that only contains the following: ========================================

Browsing across subnets connected by a linux router without using WINS
Hi! We have the following scenario: Subnet 1 ======= Contains PDC for domain DOM1 all clients in this subnet belong to DOM1 Subnet 2 ======= contains PDC for domain DOM2 all clients in this subnet belong to DOM2 These two subnets are connected via a multihomed linux box set up as a router between these subnets. IP routing definately works ok. What we want to achive is, to have full NetBIOS

clustered samba registers all non CTDB addresses at WINS server
Hi all, in the first step to separate my wins/netbios/nmbd and my clustered samba servers i've installed the WINS feature on a windows 2k8r2 server, and set the "wins server = ip.adress.of.windows.server" the weird thing is: my samba 3.5.8 do not only register the public CTDB ip addresses specified by "cluster addresses =", but also the static maintenance ip's + the

WINS server (nmbd) puzzle
My client Windows XP boxes are failing to register with my WINS server (running nmbd from Samba). I'm puzzled how to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Background: I'm setting up BackupPC to back up my Windows clients using rsync. I've installed cwRsync to the clients. BackupPC uses nmblookup to find the client's IP address given its Windows NETBIOS name. I'm

domain/WINS problem
Hello, Concerning my problem with not being able to connect to our domain with our Samba clients, there is a further piece of evidence in my samba.log, and I'm hoping that someone who is more experienced in dealing with WINS and domains can clarify the nature of these messages from the log: sync_with_dmb: Initiating sync with domain master browser PLEIADES<20> at IP
