Speeding up Samba
I have a 3.2 GHz P4 Win XP Pro connected to a Fedora Core 4 server running on a 2 GHz Celeron. I get about 350 MB/s FTP transfer over a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Samba is very much slower between the same computers. Can Samba be sped up to where it approaches the FTP performance? -- Chuck Forsberg caf@omen.com www.omen.com 503-614-0430 Developer of Industrial ZMODEM(Tm) for Embedded

Re-exporting CIFS file systems
Is there a way to force the Samba server to ignore mounted CIFS file systems? I can't see anything in the smb.conf documetation to do this generally.

RH 7.3 + Samba DC
Hi All, very new to the linux thing. I have tried our local linux list but no luck. I have setup Samba on the box which is running Rh7.3 with Samba 2.2.3a-6 (server/common & client) I got a tut from IBMs site on how to setup a pdc with samba and redhat. I followed the tut step for step but still when I want to login on wind98 onto the box I get a message that the pdc is not found. When I

User/Group HWM ignored when converting idmap from tdb to LDAP
Hi! I'm trying to convert my tdb-based idmap mapping to a LDAP-based one. This generally works as intended, with one exception - the highest uidNumber/gidNumber in use is not transferred, and this causes duplicate use of the same uid/gidNumber. Here's what I'm doing: 1) net idmap dump /var/cache/samba/winbindd_idmap.tdb > idmap.dump 2) Set idmap backend in smb.conf to

Re: Libvirt APIs for creating virtual networks
Does the libvirt has any capabilities to get the statistics of DHCP server ? How many packets received/sent ? Is there a way to get those statistics if the APIs are not available ? NetworkManager and bridged networking
Adam Williamson (adamw) has done a fine job at determining how to get bridged networking working with NetworkManager: https://www.happyassassin.net/2014/07/23/bridged-networking-for-libvirt-with-networkmanager-2014-fedora-21/ According to Adam, he did the work on Fedora 21 whereas I did it on Fedora 20. the undesirable features (problems) I found may be corrected on F21 but I believe that

Re: getting oriented/networking
Dear Boyland, In collaboration with some of this mailing list users, I had put some effort in optimising the guest settings in function of a windows guest. The libvirt-gui doesn't include these options. You'll have to edit the XML in virsh. This was my conclusion on 15-03-2015 but I added the hugepages tip in this list today. As for networking, I only use or bridged or the default virtual

Resizing / partition ?
Hi. I know this has probably been discussed a lot so I'm sorry, noob here. I found a good tutorial here: http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/shrink-lvm-for-new-partition My only problem is understanding this. "To calculate the new End sector, ADD the partition Start sector to the PV PSize, and then add a safety margin of around 131072 sectors (64MB) to that." If anybody

Multiple Clients, Winbind and idmap in LDAP, documentation incorrect?
Hi! I have a setup with several Linux machines running samba-3.0.22-10.1.17 (from SuSE 10 OSS), authenticating against an AD. Since one of the machines is exporting an NFS share mounted by the rest of the machines, I need SID <-> uid/gid mapping to be shared between all Linux machines, which led me into using an OpenLDAP server as idmap backend. My smb.conf is found at the end of this mail.

how to make a true binary package?
I'd like to have a version of a package that doesn't include sources. I thought that this could be achieved by using binary option in R CMD build, but in fact it packages source code that could be easily printed once the library is loaded. Is there an option to avoid visibility of the source? Another related question is how to install two versions of the same package, so that i could

getting oriented/networking
I've been using virt-manager and kvm with a disk image (as in the raw bits) from a physical windows 7 machine. Initial performance was dreadful, but improved as I switched to virtio and spice. I've been running linux VM's somewhat longer (much longer if you count kvm without libvirt). There are lots of choices exposed by virt-manager. How do I find out what the choices mean, and

So what to do with Unicode filenames?
Hi! I spent a few hours in google but didn't find any solution to make rsync backups of Win XP (2k, NT) machine to Lunix rsync server? As far as I understand we can't teach cygwin to work with unicode filenames, isn't it? Does anyone knows the solution? Is there any non-cygwin rsync Windows realisations? Or maybe there is any other program that can do backups with same manner?

crash in extlinux/main
Hi, I found a bug in extlinux/main.c. Writing a bootloader on a file mounted via /dev/mapper in Lunix it crashed on me with a segment fault. The bug is here: if (!ioctl(devfd, HDIO_GETGEO, &geo)) { Since we are already called with geo as a pointer the & is wrong as the pointer itself will be overwritten. This works: int get_geometry(int devfd, uint64_t totalbytes, struct

Files larger than 1GB fail to copy
I have a QNAP TS-410 NAS on which I have some CIFS shares. I'm trying to copy some biggish files from a Lunix machine to the CIFS share on the NAS but have runs into problems. I've created files of various sizes and I've found that I can copy files up to size 1024MB to the CIFS share on the NAS, but when I try to copy anything larger than that the copy command hangs forever and nothing

Seeking GlusterFS Commercial Support
Hi Everyone, My company is currently working with a number of service providers who are using Enomaly ECP, our IaaS platform, backed by a GlusterFS storage system and I'm interested in connecting with individuals or companies with in-depth expertise in GlusterFS who offers commercial support for that file-system. Does anyone on this list offer commercial support services around GlusterFS or

Samba, NIS and Winbind
I'm going to install Samba as file server on a local networl with a NT 4 domain; before choosing i have to clear some ideas: Samba need users account and the same account must be known to linux, too? but, always i have to define users on linux, too? To define users on linux i can manually insert them in /etc/passwd or i can use NIS as source in the nsswitch to obtain account from the NT

The documentation about networks say: ╭─────┤ http://libvirt.org/formatnetwork.html#elementsConnect ├───── │Inclusion of the forward element indicates that the virtual network is │to be connected to the physical LAN.Since 0.3.0. The mode attribute │determines the method of forwarding. If there is no forward element, the │network will be isolated from any other network

macvtap direct
Hi Couple of questions around macvtap direct usage: 1) is the document here current? https://libvirt.org/formatnetwork.html#examplesDirect I have been able to get host to guest network traffic without any special configuration or switch since Fedora 28 when I first started using it. Using <forward mode=vepa> requires switch port mirroring, but just using <forward mode=bridge>
