nmap showing lots of ports open that shouldn't be
I have a CentOS 4.2 machine. lokkit shows that a firewall is enabled, and it is customized to allow SSH, Web, and DNS traffic only. But if I run nmap against the server IP (from my home machine, outside the local network) it shows over 1000 open ports. Am I not understanding nmap, or is there something seriously wrong here? Here is a small snip of the nmap output (I can include it all if

Mail-crypt plugin clarification
rje writes: > I'm looking into ways to encrypt the stored email on my server. The idea is > to make it impossible for my hosting provider (who has access to my VPS) to > read the mail from the disk. Just to be clear, if at any point your VPS has access to the plaintext mail (or keys that decrypt mail), then the VPS provider could access your decrypted mail. To make it unfeasible

On most machines I have no problems, but on 2 2K machines and 1 XP machine I'm getting the same behaviour every time I either try to write the file or execute a file, no matter whether I log on to the domain or which userid I log on as. smbd processes 99% cpu and end-user locks up
Still having a situation, in particular with Microsoft Office products (Excel, MS Word, etc), wherein a user locks up while saving a file. The scenario goes as follows: user opens up a file (excel document, word document, etc), user changes file, user hits save, user hangs... `top` reports an smbd belonging to user locked in some sort of loop causing 99% cpu utilization. net status sessions

Using IPKall and SIP with insecure=very
Hi all, I've got one of those cool free incoming IPKall phone numbers from www.ipkall.com. These numbers just connect to the SIP proxy of your choice, they default to Frreworld Dialup. You can use them with your own sip proxy on asterisk. My config for this is below. The trouble I'm having is the incoming calls do not seem to hit the section in sip.conf for the call. With sip

Wine and Audio problem
Hi, I installed wine in order to be able to transfer data from my Polar Heart Rate Monitor to my computer. The program uses sound to transmit data files, which are picked up my the microphone and then the program shows all data, if all goes well. It worked perfectly twice, but then I get sound problems. The problem here, is that the sounds from the HRM are not being picked up by the microphone.

Icecast2 / Ogg / oddcastDSP / Winamp2 Constant Prebuffering
Hrm, yes it does sound like a bug in WinAmp. Even if it does prebuffer, the length counter should be going beyond 0:01 since you've obviously been listening longer than that after the first second. =P (I don't think the counter resets after buffering, but I could be wrong.) Can you see if you can duplicate it by getting someone else to tune in to the 'cast with WinAmp?

failover/redundancy with dfs, ldap, and samba
Hello, I have some general failover/redundancy questions: 1) Is it possible to have samba use multiple ldap servers without an external load balancing solution like a Cisco CSS? 2) I want to have samba be my dfs root. How can I have redundant/failover dfs root servers again without some sort of load balancing device like a CSS if that would even work in this situation....I think it would, it
