ZFS on Mac - new sighting
There''s been another sighting of ZFS on Mac. The latest developer
release of Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) has a dialogue box calling out the
"Zettabyte File System (ZFS)" as an option. The first publication I
saw this is a French website called Mac4Ever - http://mac4ever.com/

I put up a Babelfish translation at my site, http://storagemojo.com/?

How to produce glm graph
I'm very new to R and modeling but need some help with visualization of glms.
I'd like to make a graph of my glms to visualize the different effects of
different parameters.
I've got a binary response variable (bird sightings) and use binomial glms.
The 'main' response variable is a measure of distance to a track and the
parameters I'm testing for are vegetation parameters

zero variance in part of a glm (PR#11355)
In this real example (below), all four of the replicates in one
treatment combination had zero failures, and this produced a very high
standard error in the summary.lm.
=20
Just adding one failure to one of the replicates produced a well-behaved
standard error.

I don't know if this is a bug, but it is certainly hard for users to
understand.

I would value your comments=20

How to extrapolate a model
I am using a multiple additive model (in the quantreg package) and I would
like to 'extract' the fitted model formulae
ie- for a straight line the formula would be y= 'a+b*c'
for my multiple model I would expect somthing more complex because the model
is not linear (its a bit like a GAM) but given I can plot the model using
# f<-fitted(model)
#lines(f)
there must be a formula

Separating parts of a column of data in R
Hi there,
I am fairly new to R and I have been trying to figure out how to separate a
column of substrate data that I have into separate parts using R.
An example of my data looks like this is:
gmtTime Classification ClassValue Species Count
1449 Sand 30
1449 Mud 70 Brittle Star 1
1449 Mud 70

superimposing different plot types in lattice panel.superpose
I would like to plot 3 best-fit models in a single panel of a lattice plot,
superimposed on 3 corresponding datasets in the same panel. My goal is to
show the models as lines of 3 different colors, and the data as points whose
colors correspond to the model colors. In essence, I have two levels of
grouping: 1) model vs. data, and 2) model number. Since there is only one
?groups? variable, I

remove quotes from the paste output
Hi,
I'm generating the name of the variable with paste function and then using that
variable name further to get the specific position value from the data.frame,
here is the snippet from my code:

#extractModelParameters reads all the output files from the Test folder and

A bit OT...but here is a nifty Rails sighting.... ;)
According to arstechnica,
<http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/forever.ars>Duke Nukem Forever
has been ported to Ruby on Rails and is now rendered with
some kind of magic mishmash of svg-canvas and ajax! This truely is an
example of the incredible power of a web browser. Any hope for getting Mr.
Fowler to add a Recipe for this type of thing in his new book? ;)

RODBC looping sql script
Dear R users,
I am querying an Oracle database using sqlQuery() from the RODBC
package. What I would like to do is embed my R Sql query in a for loop.
For example
suppose the data.frame "vessel" contains two columns: vessel[,1]= vessel
id and vessel[,2]=permit year
I am using "vessel" as an input in a SQL based function that require
inputs of permit year and vessel id

extractModelParameters HELP!!!
Hello Gurus,
I'm using one of the function, i.e. extractModelParameters, from the
MplusAutomation package to read parameters fromMplus out files into R. I have
360 cells and each cell has several out files (max. 100). I'm extracting the
model parameters from each cell and doing subsequent calculations, primarily, on
'est.' column. The following code demonstrates how I'm

Using a by() function to process several regression (lm()) functions
Hello,
Thank you very much for looking at this. I have a "seasonal" user for R. I
teach my undergrads and graduates students statistics using R and often find
myself trying to solve problems to process student collected data in an
efficient way.
In this case, I have a data.frame with multiple observations. These are gas
concentrations in a chamber and are used to measure into rates,

track on boats
Hi professors
I'm finding the best package in R for manage a big database about vessels. I need to divided the travel of each boat into tracks. I have GPS points.
I would join these points in a line on the map. I make that with the function "lines", but I can't divided by vessel or by track,
I saw several packages, for tracking animals but they had specifically variables. And I

trying ti use a function in aggregate

Create a data subset
Hello,
I want to select same data of a data frame that has information of fish
catches:
catch, vessel, trip, day, month, year
where trip is the fishing operation number done in each day by each vessel,
i.e. for each day, any vesel can have several register of catch
corresponding to each operation.
>From this data frame I want to do:
1. Add the catches of all trip by vessel and day; then

mixed models for analyzing survey data with unequal selec tion probability
Han-Lin
I don't think I have seen a reply so I will suggest that maybe you could try
a different approach than what you are thinking about doing. I believe the
current best practice is to use the weights as a covariate in a regression
model - and bytheway - the weights are the inverse of the probabilities of
selection - not the probabilities.
Fundamentally, there is a difficulty in making

Violin plot of categorical/binned data
Hi,
I'm trying to create a plot showing the density distribution of some
shipping data. I like the look of violin plots, but my data is not
continuous but rather binned and I want to make sure its binned nature (not
smooth) is apparent in the final plot. So for example, I have the number of
individuals per vessel, but rather than having the actual number of
individuals I have data in the
