SEM model fit
I wonder if someone could explain why, when I perform confirmatory
factor-analysis model using polychoric correlations why I do not get an
estimated confidence interval for the RMSEA. My experience with these type
models is that I would obtain a confidence interval estimate. I did not get
any warning messages with the output.
RESULTS:

Kerberos password authentication and SSH2
My site uses Kerb 4 (actually AFS) for virtually all authentication. No
users have local passwords on machines.
We'd like to start allowing SSH2 connections, but OpenSSH 2.3.0p1 will not
authenticate Kerberos passwords for SSH2 connections. In auth2.c:
#ifdef KRB4
/* turn off kerberos, not supported by SSH2 */
options.kerberos_authentication = 0;
#endif

AIX authenticate()
Hi,
I just got a comment from one of my IBM support engineeres that there
is a problem with auth-passwd.c only calling authenticate() once. He
claims it should potentially be called several times, in case several
authetication methods are defined in /etc/security/user. F.ex.:
SYSTEM = "NIS and DCE"

Looking for Speed in a Toy Simulation Example
Dear List Members
I used to play around with R to answer the following question by
simulation (I am aware there is an easy explicit solution, but this is
intended to serve as instructional example).
Suppose you have a poker game with 6 players and a deck of 52 cards.
Compute the empirical frequencies of having a single-suit hand. The
way I want the result structured is a boolean nosimulation

Combining RSA host authentication with another method
Precedence: bulk
Hi folks,
It seemed to me that it would be useful to be able to control access to
my server with the /etc/ssh_known_hosts file, using RSA authentication
of the remote host. But the protocol only allows RSA host authentication
in conjunction with rhosts, while I prefer RSA user authentication.
I've made a patch to the server which adds a new configuration option:

OpenSSH vs AIX 4.3.3 => 5.1 utmp patch
The patch below follows changes in AIX utmp handling made between AIX 4.3.3
and 5.1. With it, utmp entries are properly recorded again.
The patch applies to OpenSSH 3.1p1, and seems to work fine. The co-worker
who sent me the patch hasn't tested backwards compatibility on AIX 4.3.3
systems.

patch: disable credential forwarding after password auth.
Dear list,
since the order of authentication and AFS token/KRB TGT forwarding
changed (around 3.0), we have had problems with users accidentally
overwriting their credentials from a "password" login with forwarded
credentials. E.g. user A logs in as user B, but stays with the AFS
permissions of user A. A workaround is to use "-k" on these sessions,
but "it worked without

problem with AFS token forwarding
Hello,
I came across an interoperability problem in OpenSSH 3.0p1 and 3.0.1p1
concerning the AFS token forwarding. That means that the new versions are
not able to exchange AFS tokens (and Kerberos TGTs) with older OpenSSH
releases (including 2.9p2) and with the old SSH 1.2.2x. In my opinion this
problem already existed in Openssh 2.9.9p1, but I have never used this
version (I only looked at the

Announce: OpenSSH 7.5 released
OpenSSH 7.5 has just been released. It will be available from the
mirrors listed at http://www.openssh.com/ shortly.
OpenSSH is a 100% complete SSH protocol 2.0 implementation and
includes sftp client and server support. OpenSSH also includes
transitional support for the legacy SSH 1.3 and 1.5 protocols
that may be enabled at compile-time.
Once again, we would like to thank the OpenSSH community

Is support being removed for ordinary users to run sshd?
Hello Darren,
Could you comment on this issue being raised by myself and
Corinna Vinschen?
This will create big problems for me.
I'm not clear if this is a conscious decision supported by solid
reasons or if it is just collateral damage.
Thank you for all you work!

Suggestion: SSHD pseudo/fake mode. Source available.
Hi,
SSH brute force attacks seem to enjoy increasing popularity. Call me an
optimist or a misrouted kind of contributer to the community, but on our
company server I actually go through the logs and report extreme cases
to the providers of the originating IP's. With the increasing number of
these attacks, however, I have now decided that it's better to move the

Match vs. ChallengeResponseAuthentication?
Hello,
We'd like to allow passwords only from the local network, and allow public key auth from on-campus or off-campus. The server runs SuSE Linux, and we might do the same on RHEL/CentOS & Mac OS X if we can get it to work.
Unfortunately, Match allows PasswordAuthentication but not ChallengeResponseAuthentication. Is there any reason ChallengeResponseAuthentication cannot be

Empty password patch
For every (successful) ssh-connection we got an additional annoying entry
in /var/log/messages like the following:

user usenbinz
The OpenAFS PAM module posts this message when it is called for
authentication with an (disallowed) empty password. The simple patch below

patch: openssh empty password fail with pam/sshv1
Hi,
We've encountered a bug with OpenSSH 3.8.1p1 on Linux. With an account
that has an empty password and with PAM and Privilege Separation turned
on through the SSH1 protocol, the login fails with:
fatal: mm_request_receive_expect: read: rtype 24 != type 46
I believe the problem is a missing do_pam_account() call. The patch below
to auth1.c fixes the problem. If this is correct, can

Timing attacks and owl-always-auth
Hi All.
Attached is a patch against OpenBSD, based in part on the owl-always-auth
patch.
The idea is that the only way out of auth_passwd for the failure case is
the "return 0" at the bottom.
I don't know if this is a good way to do it or not, it's presented for
discussion.
Also, I don't think 3.6.1p2 is quite right WRT these timing issues (eg,
you get a fast failure

patch for TIS (skey/opie) *and* passwd auth via PAM
Hello,
appended is a patch that makes it possible to use PAM both for
password authentication and TIS (i.e. s/key or opie or any other
interactive challenge/response scheme). I have developed this starting
from the patch at http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/61/61906.html on
Debian with openssh-2.1.1p4-3. After configuring ssh with
--with-pam-tis, there are two PAM services, "sshd" and
