Zil on multiple usb keys
This might be a stupid question, but here goes... Would adding, say, 4 4 or 8gb usb keys as a zil make enough of a difference for writes on an iscsi shared vol?
I am finding reads are not too bad (40is mb/s over gige on 2 500gb drives stripped) but writes top out at about 10 and drop a lot lower... If I where to add a couple usb keys for zil, would it make a difference?
Thanks.

Using local disk for cache on an iSCSI zvol...
I''m just wondering if anyone has tried this, and what the performance
has been like.
Scenario:
I''ve got a bunch of v20z machines, with 2 disks. One has the OS on it,
and the other is free. As these are disposable client machines, I''m not
going to mirror the OS disk.
I have a disk server with a striped mirror zpool, carved into a bunch of
zvols, each exported via

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi,
as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL
drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking
for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html
Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a
good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that is mainly used for file

zvol (slow) vs file (fast) performance snv_130
Hello,
I was doing performance testing, validating zvol performance in particularly, and found that zvol write performance to be slow ~35-44MB/s at 1MB blocksize writes. I then tested the underlying zfs file system with the same test and got 121MB/s. Is there any way to fix this? I really would like to have compatible performance between the zfs filesystem and the zfs zvols.

Dedicated server running ESXi with no RAID card, ZFS for storage?
Morning all...
I have a Dedicated server in a data center in Germany, and it has 2 3TB
drives, but only software RAID. I have got them to install VMWare ESXi and
so far everything is going ok... I have the 2 drives as standard data
stores...
But i am paranoid... So, i installed Nexenta as a VM, gave it a small disk
to boot off and 2 1Tb disks on separate physical drives... I have created a

Import vmware vmdk into xVM (osol-2009.06)
Good afternoon,
I was wondering if anyone has any in site as to how to import a VMware vmdk into xVM on OpenSolaris 2009.06 (xVM 3.1). I have a VMware VM created on VMware Server 2.0 and would like to move it over to this xVM server.
I appreciate any advice anyone may have.
Cheers,

sharing a ssd between rpool and l2arc
Hi,
as Richard Elling wrote earlier:
"For more background, low-cost SSDs intended for the boot market are
perfect candidates. Take a X-25V @ 40GB and use 15-20 GB for root
and the rest for an L2ARC. For small form factor machines or machines
with max capacity of 8GB of RAM (a typical home system) this can make a
pleasant improvement over a HDD-only implementation."

Best way to measure performance of ZIL
Hi all,
I currently have a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD as a ZIL device and am well aware of
their exaggerated claims of sustained performance. I was thinking about
getting a DRAM based ZIL accelerator such as Christopher George''s DDRDive,
one of the STEC products, etc. Of course the key question i''m trying to
answer is: is the price premium worth it?

Homegrown Hybrid Storage
Hi,
I''m looking to build a virtualized web hosting server environment accessing
files on a hybrid storage SAN. I was looking at using the Sun X-Fire x4540
with the following configuration:
- 6 RAID-Z vdevs with one hot spare each (all 500GB 7200RPM SATA drives)
- 2 Intel X-25 32GB SSD''s as a mirrored ZIL
- 4 Intel X-25 64GB SSD''s as the L2ARC.

zpool on a zvol inside zpool
Hi.
I'm moving some of my geli installation to a new machine. On an old
machine it was running UFS. I use ZFS on a new machine, but I don't have
an encrypted main pool (and I don't want to), so I'm kinda considering a
way where I will make a zpool on a zvol encrypted by geli. Would it be
completely insane (should I use UFS instead ?) or would it be still
valid ?
Thanks.
Eugene.

ZVOL access permissions?
How can I set up a ZVOL that''s accessible by non-root users, too? The intent is to use sparse ZVOLs as raw disks in virtualization (reducing overhead compared to file-based virtual volumes).
Thanks,

l2arc current usage (population size)
Hello,
How do you tell how much of your l2arc is populated? I''ve been looking for a while now, can''t seem to find it.
Must be easy, as this blog entry shows it over time:
http://blogs.sun.com/brendan/entry/l2arc_screenshots
And follow up, can you tell how much of each data set is in the arc or l2arc?

dedicated ZIL/L2ARC
We are looking into the possibility of adding a dedicated ZIL and/or L2ARC devices to our pool. We are looking into getting 4 ? 32GB Intel X25-E SSD drives. Would this be a good solution to slow write speeds? We are currently sharing out different slices of the pool to windows servers using comstar and fibrechannel. We are currently getting around 300MB/sec performance with 70-100% disk busy.

ZFS and TRIM
My google-fu is coming up short on this one... I didn''t see that it had
been discussed in a while ...
What is the status of ZFS support for TRIM?
For the pool in general...
and...
Specifically for the slog and/or cache???

Making a zvol unavailable to iSCSI trips up ZFS
I''ve been experimenting with a two system setup in snv_134 where each
system exports a zvol via COMSTAR iSCSI. One system imports both its
own zvol and the one from the other system and puts them together in
a ZFS mirror.
I manually faulted the zvol on one system by physically removing some
drives. What I expect to happen is that ZFS will fault the zvol pool
and the iSCSI stack will

zfs send of a cloned zvol
Hi,
I have a question, let''s say I have a zvol named vol1 which is a clone of a snapshot of another zvol (its origin property is tank/myvol at mysnap).
If I send this zvol to a different zpool through a zfs send does it send the origin too that is, does an automatic promotion happen or do I end up whith a broken zvol?
Best regards.
Maurilio.

Two zvol devices one volume?
Hi,
Can anyone explain the following to me?
Two zpool devices points at the same data, I was installing osol
2008.11 in xVM when I saw that there already was a partition on the
installation disk. An old dataset that I deleted since i gave it a
slightly different name than I intended is not removed under /dev. I
should not have used that name, but two device links should perhaps

ZFS Space Map optimalization
I have a huge problem with space maps on thumper. Space maps takes over 3GB
and write operations generates massive read operations.
Before every spa sync phase zfs reads space maps from disk.
I decided to turn on compression for pool ( only for pool, not filesystems ) and it helps.
Now space maps, intent log, spa history are compressed.
Not I''m thinking about disabling checksums. All

File cloning
Hello,
I''ve recently joined this list, primarily because of a thread I found from late April ("Is file cloning anywhere on ZFS roadmap") asking about file-level cloning in ZFS. Based on that thread I understand that it''s not currently possible to ''clone'' files instead of ''copying'' them, but the thread didn''t answer the
