SUMMARY: mounting datasets from a read-only pool with aid of tmpfs
Hello all, I''d like to report a tricky situation and a workaround I''ve found useful - hope this helps someone in similar situations. To cut the long story short, I could not properly mount some datasets from a readonly pool, which had a non-"legacy" mountpoint attribute value set, but the mountpoint was not available (directory absent or not empty). In this case

Changing rpool device paths/drivers
Hello all, It was often asked and discussed on the list about "how to change rpool HDDs from AHCI to IDE mode" and back, with the modern routine involving reconfiguration of the BIOS, bootup from separate live media, simple import and export of the rpool, and bootup from the rpool. The documented way is to reinstall the OS upon HW changes. Both are inconvenient to say the least.

Recovery of RAIDZ with broken label(s)
Hi all, I have a 5 drive RAIDZ volume with data that I''d like to recover. The long story runs roughly: 1) The volume was running fine under FreeBSD on motherboard SATA controllers. 2) Two drives were moved to a HP P411 SAS/SATA controller 3) I *think* the HP controllers wrote some volume information to the end of each disk (hence no more ZFS labels 2,3) 4) In its "auto

sub-optimal ZFS performance
Hello, ZFS is behaving strange on a OSOL laptop, your thoughts are welcome. I am running OSOL on my laptop, currently b124 and i found that the performance of ZFS is not optimal in all situations. If i check the how much space the package cache for pkg(1) uses, it takes a bit longer on this host than on comparable machine to which i transferred all the data. user at host:/var/pkg$ time

Can I create a mirror for a root rpool?
On Solaris 10 If I install using ZFS root on only one drive is there a way to add another drive as a mirror later? Sorry if this was discussed already. I searched the archives and couldn''t find the answer. Thank you.

Confused about zfs recv -d, apparently
First, it fails because the destination directory doesn''t exist. Then it fails because it DOES exist. I really expected one of those to work. So, what am I confused about now? (Running 2008.11) # zpool import -R /backups/bup-ruin bup-ruin # zfs send -R "zp1 at bup-20090222-054457UTC" | zfs receive -dv bup-ruin/fsfs/zp1" cannot receive: specified fs (bup-ruin/fsfs/zp1)

zfs root, jumpstart and flash archives
I understand that currently, at least under Solaris 10u6, it is not possible to jumpstart a new system with a zfs root using a flash archive as a source. Can anyone comment as to whether this restriction will pass in the near term, or if this is a while out (6+ months) before this will be possible? Thanks, Jerry

cannot mount ''/export'' directory is not empty
Hello, I am desperate. Today I realized that my OS 108 doesn''t want to boot. I have no idea what I screwed up. I upgraded on 108 last week without any problems. Here is where I''m stuck: Reading ZFS config: done. Mounting ZFS filesystems: (1/17) cannot mount ''/export'': directory is not empty (17/17) $ svcs -x svc:/system/filesystem/local:default (local file

can''t boot 2009.06 domU on Xen 3.4.1 / CentOS 5.3 dom0
I''ve got a CentOS 5.3 dom0 with Xen 3.4.1-rc5 (or so). I''ve tried the same stuff below with 3.4.0, no difference. I''m trying to install 2009.06 PV domU based on instructions from [1] and [2]. I can run the install fine, I can also get the kernel and boot archive (from [2]) after the install. But for the life of me I can''t get the installed domU to boot. If I

Virtual to physical migration
I had created a virtualbox VM to test out opensolaris. I updated to latest dev build and set my things up. Tested pools and various configs/commands. Learnt format/partition etc. And then, I wanted to move this stuff to a solaris partition on the physical disk. VB provides physical disk access. I put my solaris partition in there and created slices for root, swap etc. in that partition inside the

zfs list extentions related to pNFS
Hi, I am soliciting input from the ZFS engineers and/or ZFS users on an extension to "zfs list". Thanks in advance for your feedback. Quick Background: The pNFS project (http://opensolaris.org/os/project/nfsv41/) is adding a new DMU object set type which is used on the pNFS data server to store pNFS stripe DMU objects. A pNFS dataset gets created with the "zfs

''zfs list'' output showing incorrect mountpoint after boot -Z
I installed snv_92 with zfs root. Then took a snapshot of the root and clonned it. Now I am booting from the clone using the -Z option. The system boots fine from the clone but ''zfs list'' still shows that the ''/'' is mounted on the original mountpoint instead of the clone even though the output of ''mount'' shows that ''/'' is

What is your data error rate?
After having read this mailing list for a little while, I get the impression that there are at least some people who regularly experience on-disk corruption that ZFS should be able to report and handle. I?ve been running a raidz1 on three 1TB consumer disks for approx. 2 years now (about 90% full), and I scrub the pool every 3-4 weeks and have never had a single error. From the oft-quoted 10^14

Doing ZFS rollback with preserving later created clones/snapshot?
Hi. Is it possible on Solaris 10 5/09, to rollback to a ZFS snapshot, WITHOUT destroying later created clones or snapshots? Example: --($ ~)-- sudo zfs snapshot rpool/ROOT at 01 --($ ~)-- sudo zfs snapshot rpool/ROOT at 02 --($ ~)-- sudo zfs clone rpool/ROOT at 02 rpool/ROOT-02 --($ ~)-- LC_ALL=C sudo zfs rollback rpool/ROOT at 01 cannot rollback to ''rpool/ROOT at 01'': more

How to rename rpool. Is that recommended ?
Hello, I have a situation where a host, which is booted off its ''rpool'', need to temporarily import the ''rpool'' of another host, edit some files in it, and export the pool back retaining its original name ''rpool''. Can this be done ? Here is what I am trying to do: # zpool import -R /a rpool temp-rpool # zfs set mountpoint=/mnt

zfs allow does not work for rpool
I am trying to give a general user permissions to create zfs filesystems in the rpool. zpool set=delegation=on rpool zfs allow <user> create rpool both run without any issues. zfs allow rpool reports the user does have create permissions. zfs create rpool/test cannot create rpool/test : permission denied. Can you not allow to the rpool? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
