totem fails to open .wmv file
Hey All, Totem has stopped playing .wmv files recently. I don't know exactly when this happened, but I know I've played .wmv files not too very long ago. I've got 372 .wmv files all of which I've played at one time. When I try to launch any one of the .wmv files from file manager totem pops up but the controls are not functional. If I start totem from a terminal there is no

Samba Print Share Problem
I had my samba printer shares working after many hours of struggling with the samba.conf file. I was happy. Now the printer shares have quit working. I checked the yum log to see if anything had been changed. Nothing applicable seems to have been changed. I've been surfing the net for the last couple of days trying to find a solution to the problem but I find many outdated and

Desperate plea for help with printer share
Hey Y'all, I've been trying for months to get samba to share my printer with my wife's Win XP machine. I've RTFM, and spent hours on google to no avail. I can't see the printer from Windows so I can't mount it up. Nothing appears in the logs. The file shares work just fine. It looks like I've got Samba 3.6.9 on this machine: [mlapier at mushroom samba]$ rpm -qa

parallel bash scripts
Check out the redirection at the end of each command. 1>&2 redirects the standard out of your child command to the standard error which then appears in the parent shell. At the end the last & launches your command into a background shell and then moves on to launch the next command. The redirections don't care if the command ever terminates. The result is that both commands

Host does not respond to nmap
Hey Y'all, I just set up a new old machine on my network. I did a net install of CentOS 6.7 on it replacing an outdated copy of Win XP. Of course I'm now in the throws of configuring the machine to be a useful member of society. [mlapier at peach ~]$ nmap -sn 192.168.15.0/24 Starting Nmap 5.51 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2015-08-23 20:12 EDT Nmap scan report for 192.168.15.1 Host is up

Thunderbird randomly segfaults at startup
Anyone else seeing this? This is happening on a straight "Desktop" install of CentOS 6.6 fully updated. I have made no changes other than installing Thunderbird. Thunderbird will occasionally (10 to 20% of the time) fail to start, and the abrt report indicates a signal 11 (SIGSEGV). I don't see any other reports of this. Is no one using Thunderbird these days? Do abrt reports

Audio weirdness on CentOS 6.2 with flash?
Hi List, I have an ASUS G73S laptop with our favorite OS installed and all up-to-date. Sound has always "just worked" When I use the Preferences>Sound app I can setup the hardware, input, output and was overall very impressed. One can check each speaker and the laptop has a front left and right and also has a bass speaker which seems to be connected to the left rear. The various

What's up with Firefox/Thundrebird
Hey All, Has anyone had trouble with Firefox/Thunderbird? When I log on if I start Thunderbird first then I can't start Firefox. Clicking on a link in an email fails to start Firefox. If I start Firefox before Thunderbird then hyperlinks in emails open a page in the existing Firefox instance. Other users on this same machine are having the same problems. This has been happening for that

Extract lines from text file
Hi, I'm looking for a command to extract lines from a large text file, a password file. A typical user has a username made from a letter followed by their id-number. m9718508:pw:9301:840: Lynch :/home/pgstud/m9718508:/bin/bash So for instance if I need to extract lines where; the 1st field, the username begins with an m and the 4th field, the group contains exactly 850 cat passwdfile |
