speed up dovecot IMAP server
Hello,
I upgraded my dovecot server (1.2 -> 2.1), from debian
backport because it was a little slow (wait 5-6 sec) when I opened some
mail (but not every mail).
Unfortunately, the mail open speed didn't
increase.
I think it's an index problem.
Have you idea for fixing?

putting "/tmp" to memory
"to memory" means: mounting a ~2 GByte filesystem [ tmpfs?, or ramfs? ], and put the "/tmp" on it. [ e.g.: 4 GByte ram in the pc ]. what to write in the "/etc/fstab"?
I would like to collect the [ answers too:P ]:
Advantages:
- Memory is way faster then HDD/SSD, so it could speed things up
- "SSD amortization" is less
Disadvantages:
- Security?

Semi-Regular Time Series with Missing Values
Hi,
I'm trying to make a ts object that has both NA values and a frequency other
than 1 (so I can use stl). I've tried all permutations I can think of, but
cannot get the desired (expected?) results.
The values live in x and the corresponding semi-regular time stamps are in
t:
> library('zoo')
> z = zoo(x, order.by=t, frequency=24)
> zzr = as.zooreg(z, start=0)

Memory usage in R grows considerably while calculating word frequencies
I am working with some large text files (up to 16 GBytes). I am interested
in extracting the words and counting each time each word appears in the
text. I have written a very simple R program by following some suggestions
and examples I found online.
If my input file is 1 GByte, I see that R uses up to 11 GBytes of memory
when executing the program on
a 64-bit system running CentOS 6.3. Why is

Memory issue
Reading a flat text file 138 Mbyte large into R with a combination of
scan (to get the header) and read.table. After conversion of text time
stamps to POSIXct and conversion of integer codes to factors I convert
everything into one data frame and release the old structures containing
the data by using rm().
Strangely, the rm() does not appear to reduce the used memory. I checked

Should garbage collection be automatic in R sessions?
Hello all,
I am having problems with memory when running R on my PC. I do not
have many large objects in my workspace, and yet when trying to create a
new vector I often encounter this error message:
> lat <- header$lat[match(profile$id, header$id)]
Error: cannot allocate vector of size 4575 Kb
Since it seems like this may indicate that I don't have enough memory available, I

curl and CVE-2013-2174
Dear members,
It may sound a silly question. I have curl installed:
# pkg_info |grep curl

Today portsnap updated the ftp/curl port, and patch-CVE-2013-2174 appeared
in files/, but the port version remained such that portaudit, and
portupgrade still complain about curl's version. What is the recommended

"quick check" failed
Hi folks,
We ran 2 mirror jobs using "rsync -av remote:/from /to"
of appr. 700 GByte. Problem: On the second run about 10 or 15
files were copied again, even though we are very sure that there
was no service running which could have changed the files on
remote:/from or on /to. Esp. Samba and NFS were off.
How comes?
The remote host has rsync version 3.0.4. The localhost uses

mirror block devices
Hi folks,
I have to migrate a set of iscsi backstores to a new target via network.
To reduce downtime I would like to mirror the active volumes first, next
stop the initators, and then do a final incremental sync.
The backstores have a size between 256 GByte and 1 TByte each. In toto
its about 8 TByte.
Of course I have found the --copy-devices patch, but I wonder if this
works as expected? Is

Hello everybody,
I have one thousand virtual users with mdbox mailbox format and 10 GByte

mailbox disk is a 6TB raid1+0 on ISCSI), so I want to put the index
files on a different disk. My actual mail_location is:
mail_location = mdbox:/var/vmail/%-1.1u/%u/mdbox

[Asus Eee PC 900] as replacement for legacy BRI phone
Hello,
I own one of these netbooks Asus Eee PC 900, mine is running FreeBSD 7.0, and a
Linux based cellphone, the OpenMoko Freerunner.
Since some time I'm thinking in a replacement of my 'normal' BRI phone
at home and the two items mentioned above let me think that the
replacement should be UNIX based as well. The legacy BRI phone, around
ten years old, even has more or less the same

Samba shares slow
Hi,
I am running Samba version 3.0.22 for a small office where the clients are
windows 2k and XP machines. basically everything works OK and the only
problem I am facing now is that it takes ages before windows opens samba
shares. I tried turning off web client in win xp which helped a little but
it is still too slow. It takes almost 7 minutes to copy a 2G file to a
windows machine from linux
