Disallow Deletion from Trash Folder
Hello: I've been tasked with trying to find a way to keep users from ever "permanently" deleting emails. The users are running Thunderbird and are using the "Archive" option for when emails are deleted. However, they are still able to delete emails from the Archive folders... I'm wondering if there's any way that I can configure Dovecot to make sure that

floppy disk controller broken
Hello, when testing FreeBSD-7.1-BETA i discovered that the floppy disk controller doesn't work correctly. Trying to format a floppy (perhaps with bad blocks) i get: Processing fdformat: ioctl(FD_FORM): Device not configured instead of the normal E letter. I then checked the same problem is present on FreeBSD-6.3 and it has been reported by Beech Rintoul (*) in 2006! Of course the floppy disk

mail-trends+Dovecot
Hi, Out of curiosity, has anyone managed to use mail-trends[0] to analyse their e-mails. I thought about trying it out, but got stuck midstream. The mail-trends scripts work very well with gmail, but because they say it is supposed to work with _any_ IMAP server, I thought I could get it running with Dovecot too. I know this is NOT a mail-trends support group though, but I believe there is

Quotas with Maildir and mdbox
Hello, We use LDAP to store our Maildir++ quota information for our Maildir mailboxes. I notice in the documentation that only SQL and flat files are supported by the dictionary quota if I want to use quota with mdbox? Are there any plans to allow LDAP to be used as the store? Populating mailbox dir
Let's say you created a (virtual) mail user but have not created the user mail directory. When you first try to access it, the mail directory is created and populated: ls -a /var/spool/vmail/domain.com/raub/ . dovecot.index.log dovecot-uidvalidity.4d375a39 tmp .. dovecot-uidlist new .Trash cur dovecot-uidvalidity subscriptions Who populates/creates

quota: ignore deleted messages (?)
Hi! I am currently in the process of preparing a migration of our old Courier-based IMAP/POP server setup to a Dovecot-based one. During this process I came across the following problem with the difference Courier and Dovecot handle deleted messages and mail quota. Quote from http://www.courier-mta.org/imap/README.maildirquota.html: ,---- | The default application configuration that uses this

Samba4 Permissions not working
I have installed and am running Samba4 as a domain controller in an existing Domain as described in "Samba4/HOWTO/Join a domain as a DC". I compiled Samba4 using the latest git sources. However I am having problems with shares on the samba server. I have a share called public on the Samba4 server. I created a folder in the share using Windows 2003 server called test and gave everyone

Maildir locking by LDA of dovecot
Hi all! First of all, I want ti thank the whole Dovecot community (developers for developing and fast responses, users for populating and responses too). Dovecot is a really good and fast IMAP server - it serves near 3000 in our installation. Now I have a problem and request community's help its resolving;) Dovecot version: 1.0.13, compiled with vpopmail support. I have an account spam at

anyone using DBMail?
I am currently using Cyrus IMAPd, and been using it for a long time, the main reason being that I want an IMAP server with nice server-side filtering, which Cyrus provides via Sieve. Given that Sieve is integrated with Squirrelmail, all is good. Or is it? Cyrus IMAPd is powerful, but it's a complete mess to upgrade, either when upgrading the software per se, or when upgrading the whole

finding messages deleted before timespec
Hi! I've been pondering about doveadm-search-query(7) and trying to formulate a search query for some time now and it seems there is no way to search for messages, which have been marked DELETED before a certain time. I want to use this to expunge all DELETED messages which have been in that state for 24h or longer. For example a cronjob runs at midnight to expunge those messages but a user

Disable maildir indexing and dovecot-uidlist on LMTP/LDA delivery
Hello all, Is there a way to use LMTP (or LDA) so that maildir index and dovecot-uidlist are not updated? My setup is such that mail delivery sees user's maildir as write only. This setup works well when using postfix for mail delivery, but when I try to switch to dovecot LMTP the lmtp process wants to read the dovecot-uidlist and fails on insufficient privileges. Is there a way around this

IMAP maildir performance difference between dovecot-uidlist versions?
Hi, Is there an IMAP performance difference using Maildir between using version 3 and version 1 of the dovecot-uidlist (either dovecot 1.0.7 or 1.1.2)? It isn't entirely clear to me there is any difference as the filename may contain the size/vsize information. The servers will eventually be running 1.1.2 with the maildir_copy_preserve_filename turned on. I'm doing a batch migration

some Maildir files not honoring dovecot-shared
I'm using RC15 on Solaris 9. The wiki indicates that when a dovecot-shared file exists, "Dovecot uses the same permissions and GID when it creates index files, dovecot-uidlist file, new mail files, etc." In my case, Dovecot *is* creating new index files based on dovecot-shared, but dovecot-uidlist and individual message files don't completely match the permissions/group

Maildir syncing rewrite
It finally seems to be working. I've done some testing now and it seems to be working fine. If you have time, see if you can get it to break (especially with INDEX=memory or by manually modifying the maildir). The UIDs are kept in Courier-compatible dovecot-uidlist file (so "mv courierimapuiddb dovecot-uidlist" should work). The great thing about this code is that we never wait for

Fixing bad maildir message sizes
Hello. As stated in my previous message, we have some old compressed maildir messages with incorrect sizes in the filename. These messages cause dovecot 2.x problems. I'm trying to write a script to crawl all our messages, check the actual message size and if necessary, fix the filename. However, when I do this, dovecot gives the message a new UID on next login. If I change the filename

Strange dovecot-uidlist behavior on maildir conversion
Hi. So I just moved my email over from mbox to maildir. For the most part the conversion went fine, but I had a bit of an odd thing happen when I accessed my mail through dovecot. It seems that when I ran mb2md to convert my mailboxes from mbox to maildir, I got a lot of messages created that look like 1142356176.000000.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000421.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000001.mbox:2,S

Exclude dovecot-uidlist files from a Maildir backup ?
Hi, I am using restic to backup my email (stored in dovecot Maildir format) to Amazon S3 As each message is a separate file on disk, and those files don't change after the email has been delivered and read by the user, the incremental backup each day is fairly efficient as it only stored new mails. However, the dovecot-uidlist files change frequently, and are often quite large. The

Cooperating with dovecot in its Maildir
Is it possible to cooperate with dovecot within its Maildir, and if so, what's required? In this particular case, we're thinking of trying to allow notmuch to operate directly on the dovecot Maildir, and at the moment, the only modifications notmuch makes are to change maildir flags. Would locking dovecot-uidlist.lock be sufficient, perhaps via liblockfile? Also, is there some reliable
