Issue on DEBUG statement
Hi,
I was running samba-4.1.4 successfully on my fedora till the below issue occurs.
I had put some simple DEBUG statements in "lib/util/debug.c" (reopen_logs_internal() and some other funcs) file to understand the logging mechanism.
And the same is compiled fine without any issues. And I started my samba service(both nmbd and smbd), I got "(core dumped) segmentation fault"

too many open files
Hello list,
I have a problem with a samba 4.1.2 (Sernet Package) on SLES 11 SP3.
Every few days samba (which works as a single ad controller) says
"NT_STATUS_TOO_MANY_OPENED_FILES" and stopps working. To fix this
Problem our customer reboots the machine.
The logfile says:

What's the difference between source3 and source4 in samba? How to use an asynchronous file system?
Hi, list, I recently begin to study samba source code. Now I have some questions to ask. Can you give me some help? The first question is what the relationship between samba versions(such as 3.x.x , 4.x.x) and samba3/samba4. In samba source code, I find two directories, souce3 and soure4. Do they mean samba3 and samba4? Actually, almost all docs in samba are about samba3, where to find

samba4.0.16 smbd internal error
Dear list,
I keep getting strange "internal error"s from smbd. I increased the log level to 3 and pasted the relevant log snippet. Does anyone know (or guess) what's going on? What should I check? Any direction to investigate?
Thanks a lot,
Sascha

Can someone help me out here?
I've recompiled and made changes to the smb.conf to no avail.

Semantics of "smb ports = 0"
Hello,
The qemu emulator has a feature to fork a samba instance for file
sharing with the emulated hosts. It communicates with smbd over stdin.
The generated configuration file contains a "smb ports = 0" directive to
prevent smbd from listening to any ports.
Unfortunately, with at least Samba 3.6.4 this causes a segfault
instead:

selftest
Thanks for the reply,
Besides the problem with
source4/lib/messaging/messaging_handlers.c,
Good to hear that selftest is actively used, then do I understand it
right that 'make test' should succeed?
My bigger problem is that it failed with lots of errors.
This must be a problem with my build, then, but since this is a fresh
tarball I am a bit puzzled.
I would appreciate some hint on

Mac Clients Disconnect with: source3/smbd/service.c:1050(close_cnum) closed connection to service data
Hi Rowland,
Thanks for the advice. I've tried your suggestions, but the problem
persists. It's strange that it only happens with Macs. I know this is a
Samba list, but have encountered anything like this pertaining to Macs in
the past?
Many thanks,
Louis

Yes, I've tried all of them at this point. I spent some time focusing on
SMB2 due to various sources indicating they target it for stability
(example: Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X [
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_with_Mac_OS_X]
).
Thanks for the suggestion though.

I notice the Configure Samba to Work Better with Mac OS X has been radically shortened?not sure why, but you may want to look at my original 22 Apr 2019 version in the history.
You may want to put vfs objects in Global. Note in the vfs_fruit man page: Be careful when mixing shares with and without vfs_fruit. OS X clients negotiate SMB2 AAPL protocol extensions on the first tcon, so mixing shares

Louis -
have you run testparm -s on your server?
You don?t show it in your smb.conf, but I assume you have vfs objects = catia fruit streams_xattr there as well as in your [data] share. If you don?t, you should since you have various fruit: parameters in the [global].
The SMB conversation in your Wireshark pcap would be easier to read if you filter on ?smb2? :-)

Dear Todd,
Thanks for all of the suggestions, yes testparm comes back fine. It used to
complain but, Rowlands original suggestion silenced the complaints, except
for one:
rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384)
But that's been around for years before the issue at hand.
Wilfred Smith's Wireshark suggestion on Stack Exchange eventually took the
focus away

with no success thus far.

I switched the first member server in production from 3.6 to 4.1. But
since that, several times per day, smbd processes are crashing on that

Mac Clients Disconnect with: source3/smbd/service.c:1050(close_cnum) closed connection to service data
Hello,
I have an issue where Macs running a wide range of OS versions all drop
connections at seemingly random intervals, but usually after some long
period of time less than 24 hours. The Windows clients keep their
connections, however.
I can test this in PowerShell with a loop like the following:
PS C:\Users\louis> while($true) { Add-Content
Z:\_smbcheck\windwows-client.txt $DT; Start-Sleep

winbind and locking accounts?
One of my colleagues at work brought to my attention that they could
continuously attempt different passwords on a linux machine connected
via AD via winbind. I did a test or too and it appears not to lock the
account after numerous attempts. Is there a way to get the behavior
like windows where too many invalid passwords puts a temporary lock on
the account?
