run-init in tmpfs
Dear Sirs, I've a question belonging to the run-init utility. I'm trying to boot a full linux system from ram. Therefore I provide a kernel and initrd from a tftp server. The full rootfs is provided through a nfs-server and is at time a cpio-archive. That archive shall be copied to the local client and mounted in a tmpfs partition. After that, I want replace the oldroot bei the root

ramfs to tmpfs
Hello, I was using a bunch of cpios in initramfs as a working system, and wondering why the unused files weren't being paged out to swap. So I reread ramfs-rootfs-initramfs.txt and now I know. So I wrote the attached utility. It creates a tmpfs, moves all files on the initramfs, moves / and executes the real init. It works, even with hardlinks, but it isn't the correct approach. Have

How to select a rootfs to test job test-amd64-amd64-xl on my own machine ?
Hi All I try to test flight 12785 job test-amd64-amd64-xl on my own machine. I download kerndist.tar.gz , dist.tar.gz and xendist.tar.gz from logfiles generated by job build-amd64-pvops and build-amd64. But there is no clue on how to get a root file system. So I try Ubuntu 11.10 as its rootfs, which is ext3 format. Unfortunately, it complains the <The disk drive for / is not ready yet or

Unable to use Photoshop CS scratch disk on tmpfs
I am running Photoshop CS under Wine (was 1.1.44, is now 1.3.0) and am unable to use a tmpfs mount as a scratch drive. Using winecfg I have mapped /tmp (the tmpfs mount) to a drive letter. It shows up in some dialogs such as Open or Save but not under the scratch drive setting in Preferences. When it is listed in, say, the Open dialog, the icon is different than the other drive letters (such as

Problems converting rootfs to ext3
Hi, i am having problems converting the rootfs - I created a journal and booted with "rw rootflags=journal=<inode>" - Before i changes the fstab and put the WIP fsck to /sbin/fsck.ext3. The kernel seems to mount the filesystem ok and then the bootup scripts (debian potato) try to fsck the rootfs which leads to e2fsck 1.20-WIP, 17-Jan-2001 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09 JFS DEBUG:

[PATCH] Don't use cache=off if device is on tmpfs
[For a bug noted earlier by both Matt Booth and Jim Meyering] If you use the guestfs_add_drive function, then currently it generates a qemu command line element like: -drive ...,cache=off,... This causes qemu to try to open the device with O_DIRECT. Unfortunately some filesystems don't support this flag, notably tmpfs, which means you can't use libguestfs in conjunction with tmpfs.

Offtopic: nfs, tmpfs and `getfh failed: Operation not permitted'
Sorry this is off-topic, but I'm scrambling to get this system in, google didn't help, and I'm sure someone on this list knows the answer cold. I'm trying to nfs-export a tmpfs disk. I saw a hint from a response about ram disks... which leads to my guess that tmpfs simply doesn't implement some method that nfsd needs. I can probably survive without tmpfs, but I'd like to

tmpfs regression in recent -STABLE
Hey, the following line in fstab used to work just fine for my /tmp: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs rw,size=1g,mode=1777 0 0 But since I upgraded to 8.2-PRERELEASE, /tmp will soon run out of space (usually after leaving the box overnight). % df /tmp Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on tmpfs 12 12 0 100% /tmp Yes, what you see here, is not
