Query on Using initramfs
Hi
I am looking at inserting functions in the early user space and want to use
initramfs for this.
I understand this can be achieved using 'initrd' or by making changes in
the 'usr/gen_init_cpio.c' file.
Can someone kindly give me pointers as to how to go about this. I am
looking at the 2.6.x kernel.
Thanks
Rachita.

Query regarding initramfs
Hi
1. Is it possible to load an initrd from initramfs ?
How would you do this if the initramfs is being loaded dynamically in
the kernel
(ie having the initramfs as initrd )
Because in this case, you will say root = /dev/initrd and specify 'initrd'
as your 'initramfs source file'
How will you specify the second initrd source?
Thanks
Rachita.

initramfs howto
Hi,
Here's a try at writing an initramfs HOWTO.
This is basically a write-up of a number of interesting emails I collected
over time.
It could probably use an editor, more fact-checking and a bunch of other
good things, but it should be better than nothing ;-)

Query on Initramfs' and Initrd's coexistence
Hi
I am trying to have a built in initramfs along with the traditional initrd.
So I mount the initrd from the initramfs, but am facing problems in trying
to run the 'linuxrc'.
Following are the issues:
1. I mount the initrd from the initramfs and exceve 'linuxrc'.
It starts executing linuxrc, but gives the following errors and panics:

only pivot_root supported? [signed]
Hi,
I hope this is the right list for initramfs questions.
First I noticed: with initrd I can use real-root-device and pivot_root
mechanisms. with initramfs only pivot_root works. My init (or linuxrc)
scripts end like this:
mount -t xfs -n -o ro /dev/mapper/root /new-root
umount -n /sys || true
umount -n /dev || true
umount -n /proc || true
cd /new-root
pivot_root . initrd
exec chroot .

initramfs memory requirements
Hi,
please correct me if I'm wrong:
- the kernel needs enough ram for the compressed initramfs and the
same files decompressed, so it can decompress the files and boot
the /init on the initramfs.
- if the kernel does not have enough ram, it will kernel panic.
my tests were done on a server with 256 mb ram and a 80MB
compressed initrd. I removed some packages and now it fits
and the

[PATCH] Allow the initramfs to be persisted across root changes
systemd supports switching back to the initramfs during shutdown in
order to make it easier to clean up the root file system. This is
desirable in order to allow us to remove keys from RAM before rebooting,
making it harder to obtain confidential information by rebooting into an
environment that scrapes RAM contents.

lvm initrd -> initramfs
I converted my lvm root initrd to an initramfs by putting glibc, lvm,
pivot_root, my linuxrc, etc. in my initramfs source file. I use ash
compiled against klibc to run my linuxrc
Unfortunately -
pivot_root . initrd
- complains -
pivot_root: Invalid argument
I suspect this may be because you can't pivot_root using a cpio
initramfs root?
If so, what should I do instead? Should I

[PATCH 0/8] switch_root() enhancements
On a train ride to Bruxelles, brought out my axe and directly attacked
run_init(8). run_init(8) is dead, long live switch_root(8).
The next run on switch_root(8) involves fdopendir,
so another push for the upcoming stdio 1.6 branch.
The following is boot tested with initramfs-tools,
kinit(8) tests would very much be appreciated!?

[PATCH supermin] init: Delete initramfs files before chrooting into the appliance.
After supermin has finished running, the initramfs files sit around
occupying swappable memory but serving no further purpose.
This saves a little memory, at the cost of about 1ms of extra boot
time.

problems when exec()ing /sbin/init from an initramfs
This is an early userspace type question. I have an initramfs that does
some root device setup, then tries to mount the real root partition and
exec /sbin/init to start the real userland. It seems to do what I want,
except that bootlogd hangs while mount /proc. I can't seem to figure
out why.
I'm booting with init=/bin/bash. bash is dynamically linked, and the
appropriate libs are in

kernel freeze on "umount /initrd" [signed]
Hi,
I'm using initramfs with pivot_root mechanism to mount
my real root directory. I notived the gentoo halt.sh
script tries to unmount everything on shutdown. That
includes /initrd. The kernel seems to freeze immideatly.
Do you have the same problems?

[PATCH] run-init: add drop_capabilities support
Building on the work in ff0a614bd724f6c4c6a5014a9955dc1bc028f336,
this moves the capability code down into the run-init library, so that
run-init can use it as well, via the new "-d" flag.

initrd / initramfs future
Hello,
I would like to know if initrd is here to stay, now that klibc and
initramfs are ready.
As the multipath-tools maintainer, I'm facing the choice to
1) put the multipath configuration tool in the initrd
* dynamic binary is possible
* storage hba drivers as modules loaded
* no klibc limitations (no mntent for libsysfs ...)
2) put the multipath configuration tool in the initramfs

Hi all (two) klibc hackers! 8)
Here's the stuff I've been using to build an initramfs image and run it
on one of my machines. Unfortunately, the "init" script contains hard
coded information about where to find the root, etc, but it should give
people a working base to start from.

[PATCH klibc] run-init: Add dry-run mode
initramfs-tools wants to validate the real init program before running
it, as there is no way out once it has exec'd run-init. This is
complicated by the increasing use of symlinks for /sbin/init and for
/sbin itself. We can't simply resolve them with 'readlink -f' because
any absolute symlinks will be resolved using the wrong root. Add a
dry-run mode (-n option) to run-init

mbr?
a bit unrelated, still I wonder:
does syslinux contain an mbr?
or does anyone know any app that contains an mbr and
can install it, without overwriting the partition table?
my experience is, that is wise to have an mbr and use
the active flag to select the active partition (which
might have a bootmanager installed). however every
linux distribution I know installed the bootloader

[PATCH - RFC] Move initramfs configuration to "General setup"
At present the configuration items for initramfs is located in:
Device drivers | Block Drivers | xxx
This is maybe not the most natural place to have it.
So with the following patch it is moved below "General setup",
and relevant config items are collected in a file with a new
home in usr/.
The original reason why I looked into this is the upcoming merge of klibc
and I missed a good
