How to use 'switch' with strings containing spaces?
Hi,
Does anyone know if the alternatives in the 'switch' function can be specified as strings containing spaces? Neither of the two approaches below works.
switch(expr, "Choice 1"="My first choice", "Choice 2"="My 2nd choice", "Choice 3"="My 3rd choice")
x <- c("Choice 1", "Choice 2", "Choice

Problems understanding use of regular expression (in gsub) for manipulating currency
Hello,
After reading help file, various threads on this board, and other online tutorials, I've attempted to use gsub (using Perl-like syntax) to change a currency string into something that can be converted to numeric type using only one regular expression. Can anybody point out my error? Note that

How to subset based on column name that is a number ?
Hi,
I have a data frame with column names "1", "2", "3", ... and I'd like to extract
a subset based on the values in the first column. None of the methods I tried
worked (below).
x <- subset(dframe, 1 = = "My Text")
x <- subset(dframe, "1" = = "My Text")
x <- subset(dframe, names(dframe)[1] = = "My Text")

How to use access results of gregexpr in data frames
Hello,
I'm trying to figure out how to find the index of the second occurrence of "/" in a string (which happens to represent a date) within a data frame column.
I've used the following code successfully to find the first instance of "/".
dframe <- data.frame(date=c("5/14/2011", "4/7/2011"))
dframe$x1 <- regexpr("/", dframe[, 1])

Can 'mosaic' be used with a continuous variable?
Hello,
I'm wondering if the 'mosaic' plot of the vcd package (or any other function for that matter) can be used with a continuous variable that should be represented via various categorical variables. All the documentation I've read lead me to believe that it only works with counts of categories.
Alternatively, I've thought of first creating a contingency table where the

How to limit string size when displaying data frames?
Hello,
Is there a way to set the maximum width of character columns when printing a data frame?
I've looked into print(), format(), and options() and have been unsuccessful.
For example, I'd like to achieve the results below without having to modify the data itself.
> x <- data.frame(c1=rnorm(5), c2="ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ")
> x

ToDo List Notation
I just joined this mail-list, so I apologize if this has been discussed
before, but:
Has anyone suggested adding a "todo list notation" to Markdown?
Specifically, I'd like to see an open paren, brace or bracket, at the start
of a line, followed by a space, a "/", or a "X", followed by a matching
closing paren, brace, or bracket, followed by a space and more text

T100p half-height PCI bracket
Hello,
Does anybody know of a place to get a half-height PCI slot bracket for the
Digium T100P card? I have an application to fit them in 1U cases for
small, deployable PBX's. The T100P itself is short enough to fit in a
half-height slot but I need an appropriate mounting bracket to screw it into
the case.
Thanks,

RV: By sentence
Hi dear listers
Do you know how to made a mean by one or more categorical variables?
I can do that quite easy on SAS by in R I just can't do it E.g.
Some fishes
Sex Lenght
male 15
fema 20
fema 17
fema 19
male 18
So the idea is mean(Lenght) by sex, in order to have sex: Male
mean=XX Sex: Fema mean=YY
In this case is quite easy to do it by a loop, but I have a huge DB

"cannot allocate vector of size ..." in RHLE5 PAE kernel
Dear R community,
I'm running R 32 bits in a 64-bits machine (with 16Gb of Ram) using a
PAE kernel, as you can see here:

Linux mymachine 2.6.18-238.el5PAE #1 SMP Sun Dec 19 14:42:44 EST 2010

When I try to create a large matrix ( Q.obs <- matrix(NA, nrow=6940,
ncol=9000) ), I got the following error:

Kerberos ticket renew causes a brief network interruption
Hi Ralph Boehme,
A new system is installed with Ubuntu 24.04.1 and Samba 4.19.5
My hotfolderscan.exe tool runs now on a Windows 2022 system and use the Ubuntu 24 system as Samba share.
The hotfolderscan tool has to run 10 hour before the Kerberos ticket renewal.
Both on the Ubuntu 24 and the Windows 2022 system, Wireshare is catching the network packages.
Tomorrow I hope to see the result.

Renewal of Let's Encrypt Certificates in Dovecot
Hi there. I've been using Dovecot for quite some time now but I just
started using Let's Encrypt certs. Since LE certs are renewed automatically
without user intervention I'm wondering if I will need to restart dovecot
after that renewal...
Has anybody had any experience with that?
Thanks so much for your help!

I followed this article to install my first xen project to compare its

Install letsencrypt and request a certificate specifying the webroot of your Icecast server and the host.domain:
certbot-auto certonly --webroot --webroot-path /usr/share/icecast2/web/ -d icecast.domain.name
Now you should have a certificate for your server, it's only in the wrong format for Icecast, copy the key and the certificate to 1 file with the following cmd:
