Is there a working XML parser for the windows R Version 2.0.1
Dear all
the regular XML package does not work correctly with the R 2.0.1 windows
version.
Can anybody indicate a suitable alternative ?
I need to dynamically read, parse and process a HTML table in R that is
available at a certain url.

converting character strings to numbers
I have a comma delimited text file in which many columns of numbers are
also quoted and have commas as well as decimals. I was surprised to find
read.csv() didn't import this seamlessly, even after messing around with
the colClasses argument. I did find a solution to convert the character
strings after reading them in, but wonder if there isn't a better one I
overlooked.

Calculating NOEL using R and logistic regression - Toxicology
Hello, I used the glm function in R to fit a dose-response relationship and
then have been using dose.p to calculate the LC50, however I would like to
calculate the NOEL (no observed effect level), ie the lowest dose above
which responses start occurring. Does anyone know how to do this?

R and condor
Hello,
I would be extremely grateful if anyone is able to provide any (rather obscure) advice on using R with Condor. I think I'm following Xianhong Xie's instructions (R News 5(2) 13-15) correctly, but my job just stays held in the queue (for days / months). I've checked condor_status to make sure there are plenty of machines available, but can't see any way to attack the

return code 10 in the R documentation
Hi Everyone,
I have group of R jobs that should be submitted to the condor when I submit
the jobs to the condor, they don't run and when I checked the Sched Log
files the jobs are exiting with status code 10. Previously, the jobs ran
well on condor but now when I submit the jobs on condor they aren't
running. Can anyone explain the meaning of this?
Here is my submit file:

Combining: R + Condor in 2009 ? (+foreach maybe?)
Hello dear R-help group (and David Smith from REvolution),
I would like to perform parallel computing using R with Condor (hopefully
using foreach or other recommended solutions, if available) for some
"Embarrassingly parallel" problem.
I will start by listing what I found so far, and then go on asking for help.
So far I found the a manual by Xianhong Xie from Rnews_2005-2 (see page

Condor and R
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has successfully linked R against the
Condor libraries so that R can be run as a Condor job in the
"standard" (not "vanilla") universe. The advantage of this would be
that due to checkpointing, jobs can be suspended and transferred to
another node. There is a good overview by Xianhong Xie here:

Condor cluster setup advice (pointers) needed
Dear Experts,
Could someone recommend some "quick and dirty" HOWTO on condor based cluster?
A did a bunch of cluster setups, I always used PBS (or torque lately). But
my professor wants his to be Condor. I started reading Condor
documentation, and it is vast. And quick route, like: architecture chart,
and parameters I need to configure on master/submit, and compute nodes -

Package boot, funtion cv.glm
Hey all,
I need some help with a cross validation. I'm new with R and as well with
statistics. I had a group work to create a tool for remote sensing class
that extracts the best bands of hyperspectral satellite images that describe
vegetation. Its a regression between a linear function of using a normalized
differenced index (i-j)/(i+j) while i and j are the bands (in the data these

FIXED: error in make pkg-...
Sorry, spoke too quickly!
The problem was caused by my editing the MkRules file with an editor that
replaces tabs with spaces. Make evidently requires that all lines start with
a tab (see http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/v2faq/faq22_17.html). Perhaps worth
warning windoze users like myself of such perils in readme.packages or
somewhere similar!
Now I have a new problem, but it looks fixable.

reclaiming lost memory in R
Dear list,
I am trying to reclaim what I think is lost memory in R, I have been using gc(), rm() and also using Rprof to figure out where all the memory is going but I might be missing something.
I have the following situation
basic loop which calls memoryHogFunction:
for i in (1:N) {
dataset <- generateDataset(i)
fit <- try( memoryHogFunction(dataset, otherParameters))
}

Simple resource manager?
I need to serialize computing job requests for two different multicore
machines, and in some near future, for a cluster. I have worked with
SGE but it requires NFS and other administrative steps, plus it seems
a bit overkill for my needs. I guess some simpler queue managing
engine may have been developed, possibly over SSH. Any pointers? TIA.
