Essay identification
Hi R-help, I have a database of 10 students who have written an overall of 78 essays. The challenge? I would like to identify who wrote the 79th essay. Has anybody used R in this context? Even if not, would you suggest me which pattern recognition technique I might possibly apply? Thanks a lot and regards, Tom --------------------------------- [[alternative HTML version

How to pre-populate Edit form in rails?
In our rails application, there is a model called Essay and another called Tag. Essay ''has_and_belongs_to_many'' tags. When a user CREATEs an essay, he gives the text in a text field which corresponds to a database column in the essays table. The _form.rhtml also provides a text area that lets the user tag the essay with keywords. The text area does not correspond directly to

generic trac question
Probably not the best time to ask this considering people are busy for the next release, but we're looking at trac for a project (apparently) and I remembered that there was a Xiph plan to move away from it. Does anyone have time to recall the reasons (I don't need an essay, just a keyword or two would be appreciated. -- imalone

learning decision trees with one's own scoring functins
Hi netters, I want to learn a decision tree from a series of instances (learning data). The packages tree or rpart can do this quite well, but the scoring functions (splitting criteria) are fixed in these packages, like gini or something. However, I'm going to use another scoring function. At first I wanna modify the R code of tree or rpart and put my own scoring function in. But it

General query regarding scoring new observations
Hi, I was wondering if I can have some advice on the following problem. Let's say that I have a problem in which I want to predict a binary outcome and I use logistic regression for that purpose. In addition, suppose that my model includes predictors that will not be used in scoring new observations but must be used during model training to absorb certain effects that could bias the

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/alpha/dovecot-1.2.alpha2.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/alpha/dovecot-1.2.alpha2.tar.gz.sig Mainly the same fixes as in v1.1.3 -> v1.1.4 plus some more v1.2-specific fixes. Not many people have been testing v1.2 releases. Wonder if there's something I could do to improve that. I guess v1.2 is kind of missing those killer features that would get a

Dear Members, I required to score probability of survival before specified time using fitted cox model on scoring dataset. On the training sample data I am able to get the probability of a survival before time point(t), but on the scoring dataset, which will have only predictor information I am facing some issues. It would be great help for me if you tell me where am I going wrong! Here is the

adaptive query scoring
Hi all Is there a way to do adaptive query scoring (as in popular results returned by a query should get more weight because they are getting clicked more often) in xapian? Is this what the rset class should be used for? I could write a php app to do adaptive results scoring for separate words (just recording the clicks and then have a cron:ned script add weight to the document_id:s for the

In factor analysis in the psych package, how can I work out which factors the columns in $scores relate to? How do I know what each of the scores is scoring?
Hi I have used fa() to perform a factor analysis of a psychological battery which is thought to have 11 factors. I can identify which factors the loadings relate to easily enough because I can see which items are loading onto each of the columns in the $loading output. However, how can I identify which items or loadings are being used to create each of the columns in the $scores output? I have

I had two questions: a) first, I am having trouble directly accessing the

Fw: Example where PPR crashes
Dear all, I have been doing tests using SVM, random forests and PPR. The data is from a data stream (that is, the data for training and for test is always increasing / changing). With SVM and random forests everything is ok, but with ppr there are situations where it crashes. For the examples I have used I noticed that if one of the variables has just one value (it can happen), it crashes for

Commands failing silently?
Hello all: I have a couple CentOS 4 servers (all up-to-date) that are having strange command failures. I first noticed this with a perl script that uses lots of system calls. Basically, sometimes a command just won't run: thoth(52) /tmp> ls thoth(53) /tmp> ls thoth(54) /tmp> ls thoth(55) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(56) /tmp> ls learner lost+found/ thoth(57)
