Cost Effectiveness Example
Hello, I'm tasked with putting together a cost effectiveness analysis on a proposed medical treatment. The "standard" suggested by someone is an expensive commercial package names "TreeAge Pro" which looks like its just a fancy GUI on top of a decision tree. However, we don't have it and it is expensive to buy. Questions for the group: 1) Are there any interesting

[PATCH] verify against known fingerprints
I've just written this patch, it's undergone minimal testing and "works for me" and I'm after feedback as to acceptability of approach, anything I should be doing differently for the feature to be acceptable upstream and what I should be doing about automated testing. Use-case: you have the host's SSH fingerprints via an out-of-band mechanism which you trust and want to

Openssh + AFS
The native authentication methods of openssh are (not counting insecure RhostsRSAAuthentication) 1) public key 2) password For users with home dirs in AFS space, method 1) does not work. Except with (non foolproof) fiddling on the access controls within the home directory. This might lead to security issues when done by inexperienced users. Without some work, only 2) remains. Being forced to send

Supported version of Samba for commercial use.
Dear Sirs. We have csv reports that are created on a unix server automatically via a cron job. We are looking at putting these reports in a shared area / work out a way of sharing a unix device to windows machine like mapping a network drive. The only product we have found that can possibly do this is samba. Because we are a large company ('BRITISH TELECOM') we really need a version of

Kernel/Asterisk/DAHDI/Libpri version matrix?
I googled about a bit without success, so... Is there a version matrix available? Something that would say: for kernel version w, you can run up to version x of Asterisk, DAHDI version y, and libpri version z? For example, I have a bunch of remote hosts running kernel 2.6.26, Asterisk 11.6.0, and DAHDI 2.7.0.1. We experience occasional Asterisk crashes, so I'd like to get as up to date

More block diagonal matrix construction code
Folks: In answer to a query, Andy Liaw recently submitted some code to construct a block diagonal matrix. For what seemed a fairly straightforward task, the code seemed a little "overweight" to me (that's an American stock analyst's term, btw), so I came up with a slightly cleaner version (with help from Andy): bdiag<-function(...){ mlist<-list(...) ## handle case in

ruby method names
Hi Attached is a patch that adds aliases to the API for methods that look like attribute accessors. So a_frame.set_title(''The title'') # currently a_frame.title = ''The title'' # now an alternative textctrl.get_value # currently textctrl.value # now an alternative Also, C++ methods named ''IsXXX'' are now exposed in ruby with

building a formula for glm() with 30,000 independent variables
I would like to use R to perform a logistic regression with about 30,000 independent variables. That's right, thirty thousand. Most will be irrelevant: the intent is to use the regression to identify the few that actually matter. Among other things, this calls for giving glm() a colossal "y ~ ..." formula with thirty thousand summed terms on its right hand side. I build up the

OT: A test with dependent samples.
I am appealing to the general collective wisdom of this list in respect of a statistics (rather than R) question. This question comes to me from a friend who is a veterinary oncologist. In a study that she is writing up there were 73 cats who were treated with a drug called piroxicam. None of the cats were observed to be subject to vomiting prior to treatment; 12 of the cats were subject to

Cannot start Xend
Hi All, I really could do with any pointers people might have as to the reason for this error. The server was working fine but this appeared after a reboot. The HTTP part in xend-config.sxp is disabled already. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Rob # service xend start Starting xend: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/sbin/xend", line 44, in ? from
