errors when installing packages (ubuntu)
Hi List, I'm having problems installing certain packages. When I try to install fields, I get the output below. I have highlighted the what I perceive as the first error (spam seems to be a dependency of fields). Can I assume this is causing dependency problems for fields, which fails to install at the end, or is there a deeper problem? I run Ubuntu Karmic Koala on R 2.9.2. 2>

impossible to invert a spam-object, but possible when it's a matrix-object
Dear R-users, a question concerning sparse matrices in package "spam" (spam_0.29-2). On one hand I have a spam object (n X n) from which I cannot compute the inverse. On the other hand, if I convert this object in a plain matrix, I can find the inverse without any problem. Specifically I get the following error message: Error in chol.spam(a, ...) : Singularity problem when

Wine and the 2.6.24-16 kernel
Sunday I intalled Kubuntu 8.04RC and afterwards discovered that an old 16 bit windows program I've been running for years in WINE will no longer run. At first it told me there wasn't 16 bit support. So, just for chuckles I booted 8.04 with the older 2.6.22.14 kernel and it worked just fine. I prefer to use the new kernel since the scanning software no longer works under the older kernel

installing 32 bit vlc on Centos 5.5??
I'm in yum dependency hell using epel, rpmforge and rpmfusion repos to install vlc on 32 bit Centos 5.5. Anyone have a better idea? Doesn't really have to be vlc I just want to be able to play a dvd and Movie Player complains about missing plugins without saying what they are. groupadd failure
Sorry, I didn't read what you said carefully enough -- it's trying to create a system group. Still, looking inside of /etc/group to see what system groups already exist is probably a good idea. ruby suitable for financial apps?
hi there, I am about to embark on a mission critical financial web application, and was wondering weather ruby on rails is the best fit for this type of project. More specifically I am worried about floating point errors. Would it be more appropriate to use a more statically typed framework (.NET)? thankyou. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

NT & Win98 slow copies
Howdy all: For those who are curious (eg, Peter de Groot <pdgtech@wantree.com.au>) here are the (I think) relevant posts from recent samba digests concerning win98 and or NT performance problems copying files between local drives and samba shares. It looks like there should be some new options to play with in the next samba release. Could Jeremy or Andrew confirm? (BTW, nice
