serialize() to via temporary file is heaps faster than doing it directly (on Windows)
Hi, FYI, I just notice that on Windows (but not Linux) it is orders of magnitude (below it's 50x) faster to serialize() and object to a temporary file and then read it back, than to serialize to an object directly. This has for instance impact on how fast digest::digest() can provide a checksum. Example: x <- 1:1e7; t1 <- system.time(raw1 <- serialize(x, connection=NULL));

problem with unlist POSIX date at midnight
Dear R-users, I use unlist of POSIX dates to extract the year, hour etc. With that I can search for files in my database which are in the form 'yyyymmddhh_synops.txt' However, I get stucked during midnight where unlist just gives NA's. anova of lme objects (model1, model2) gives different results depending on order of models
Hello- I understand that it's convention, when comparing two models using the anova function anova(model1, model2), to put the more "complicated" (for want of a better word) model as the second model. However, I'm using lme in the nlme package and I've found that the order of the models actually gives opposite results. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the case

different L2 regularization behavior between lrm, glmnet, and penalized?

issue accessing help files
Dear R-help community, I am unable to access help files when using the typical "?function.of.interest" command. For example, if I type "?anova", Internet Explorer opens, but I am never connected to the usual page describing the nuances of the anova function. This is a new problem (just started occurring a few days ago). I am currently using R 2.14.1 on a Windows XP machine.
