fixed, random effects with variable weights
Hi everyone, I have tried to solve a simple problem for days but I can't figure out how to run it properly. If someone could give me a hint, this would be really great. Basically, I want to run a standard economist's fixed, and random effects regression (corresponds to xtreg in STATA) but with _variable_ weights (they correspond to changing industry shares in the market). Here is

how to generate a set of random numbers that sum to 1 with uniform distribution of elements
Hi, I am looking for a way to generate a matrix of random numbers in a way that each row of the matrix would sum to 1 and that the numbers in the columns of the matrix would have a uniform distribution. So far I have found several ways to create random numbers that would sum to 1, but then the distribution of the individual elements is more or less skewed - there are much more small numbers than

Printer error: The data area passed to a system call is too small. ???
Sol 2.8, Samba 2.2.5 I have an hp1220c printer setup on port 2 of a 3 port hp 500x print server. There is also a hp6mp printer on port 1. I've added the hp6mp printer to my client without problems. But when I attempt to add the hp1220c I get a "could not connect to the printer" error message. If I right click on the printer when browsing with "Add Printer Wizard" a

working with sparse matrix
Hi, I have a 500x 53380 sparse matrix and I am trying to dichotomize it. Under sna package I have found event2dichot yet it doesnt recognize sparse matrix and requires adjacency matrix or array. I tried to run a simple loop code for (i in 1:500) for (j in 1:53380) if (matrix[i,j]>0) matrix[i,j]=1 yet this takes a lot of time to run, I mean it has been last two hours and it is stil running.

Best Printer Setup
Hi, I've been toying with the idea of using the Linux machine as a print server. I'm using RedHat 5.2 and Samba 2.0.3. I already have one remote printer share working... but I can't figure out where the PrintTool in RedHat is storing the remote printers IP address. Anyone know where? :) (not important just bugging me - I hate when OS's hide stuff) I have the Samba book

Printer wont appear in samba...
Hi. I cant seem to understand why my printer wont appear in Samba. I added the printer using the Printtool.conf and I can print to it from the Linux server but, I cant see the printer in my Network Neighborhood when I go browse for its share. I have a total of 7 printers on my network where one of them is connected to a jetdirect box that has two ports on it: JETDIRECT 500X. I can see the

[R] performance reflections
[This is a follow up on gcc3 vs. gcc4 discussion. Background: R benchmark tests ( http://www.sciviews.org/benchmark/index.html ) show a dramatic difference in "Escoufier's method on a 37x37 matrix (mixed)" test when comparing binaries for PowerPC compiled with gcc3 vs gcc4.] On Oct 16, 2006, at 11:29 AM, Ren? [PATCH 0/5] renouveau: nv30/nv40 unification
This patchset applies some minor fixes to renouveau.xml and then unifies the nv30 and nv40 register definitions. nv30 and nv40 are very similar and have the same offsets for the registers they share. The major differences are: 1. Texture setup is different due to full NPOT support on nv40 2. More advanced blending/render targets on nv40 3. NV30 has fixed function registers, which NV40 lacks The

How to set up spooling for a HP JetDirect interface?
I've set up Samba and LPRng for HP printers with JetDirect cards. It works for one user at a time. But if the printer is off-line or busy, the samba client does not get an error message, but the job gets lost. :( I would like the print jobs to be spooled on Linux even when there is an active print job or when the printer is off-line. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with lpd. The

memory problem in handling large dataset
Dear Listers: I have a question on handling large dataset. I searched R-Search and I hope I can get more information as to my specific case. First, my dataset has 1.7 billion observations and 350 variables, among which, 300 are float and 50 are integers. My system has 8 G memory, 64bit CPU, linux box. (currently, we don't plan to buy more memory). > R.version _ platform

Fedora Server - as an alternative ?
hi guys I wonder if any Centosian here have done something different than only contemplated using Fedora Server, actually worked on it in test/production envs. If here are some folks who have done it I want to ask if you deem it to be a viable option to put it on at least portion of servers stack. Anybody? Many thanks, L.
