WPA question
HI
I admit up front that I know just enough about wireless networking to know
that I don't know much at all about it.
That said, I'm hoping someone can help me learn a little bit...
Specifically, could a laptop running Centos 5.1 be expected to (be able
to) connect to a wireless access point using WPA2 security settings?
I don't know if WPA depends on hardware support, or if

Strange sound/browser problem on Centos5
I just did (the other day) a clean install of Centos 5 and am having a
really weird problem that I never had before (on centos 4.5).
when listening to nrk p2 (http://www.nrk.no/p2/) using Firefox, and when the
small window for the player gets obscured by another window the sound
stops playing. Move the obscuring window and it starts right up.
I haven't yet been able to tell if it is paused,

Hyperthreaded CPU and SMP kernel
Hi gang!
I'm using Centos 4.4 at work on a HP Proliant DL320 G2, which has a Hypterthreaded Pentium IV CPU.
I used to use RHEL WS 2.1 on it, and RH installed and used the SMP kernel.
Centos 4.4 did NOT install the SMP kernel. Is there some reason why I should
NOT install it myself? I.e., some reason why an SMP kernel shouldn't be used
on such a machine?
Gracias!

CUPS disabling a print queue between jobs
Hi!
on centos 4.4 (fresh install) I've got a problem with CUPS disabling a
print queue between jobs. Sometimes it will print dozens of jobs before
disabling the queue, sometimes it will do it after every job. This is
a networked HP Laserjet printer at work.
At home on a 4.4 box (upgraded from 4.3) with a local (parallel port)
printer I've not seen this problem occur. (of course, I

recover data on usb drive
Hi gang
I just did a really stupid thing...
I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive,
thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh.
then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh.
Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all
suggest for trying to get my data back?
Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it

centos 6 (what else? :) :)
Hi all!
My thanks to the Centos team for continuing to slave away on C6
even with all the distractions!!!
Just did a test install on my eeepc 901 (on an external drive, til I'm
comfortable with it) and find that it doesn't seem to know how to talk
to the ralink 2860 wireless chipset.
A few months back I did a test install of Scientific Linux 6 and as
I recall it (I may be

installing C7 on an existing software RAID system
I'm running Centos 6.5 on a software RAID-1 pair. I originally installed
it following one of the howtos from the Centos WIKI for Centos 5. My
first installation was on 5.x, then when I moved to 6.x I found that
Anaconda worked enough like the one in 5.x that I could easily adapt
the procedure.
however, the new Anaconda is nothing like the old one, so I doubt the
procedure could be made to

sound oddity on C6
I just encountered an oddity... it may have been this way for millennia :)
but somehow I've never noticed it before...
say I'm using X (which is pretty normal these days) and I have VLC
playing a "radio" station.
I do CTRL-ALT-Fx to switch to a text console THAT HAS NO ONE LOGGED IN
on it, and voila:
no sound!
as soon as I log in, the audio returns.
what gives here?

On a Centos 6.6 system, I've got a "trash" icon on the desktop that
indicates there is trash.
but when I open the trash can it's empty.
how can I reset that flag, where/whatever it is?
thanks!

A question about why the function "recv" return 0
I have used tcpdump to capture the data packets and found that after the ssl handshake, the client side reset the tcp connection.
Is there any method to pinpoint the culprit who drops the tcp connection?

I found this interesting: amount of evil traffic on the internet
I've just done a little "study" (well, nothing quite that pretentious)
of the traffic hitting my router, that gets DROPped the router's
firewall. there is a surprisingly (to me, at least) enormous amount of
it. over about the last 3 weeks, it has dropped over 65,000 connection
attempts.
I finally got around to figuring out how to have the router's logging
mechanism connect

Sound problem, possibly Mate Volume Control
Hi all!
In the last day or two (on Centos 7)the speaker icon in the Mate top
panel, which normally drops down to a volume control, has stopped working.
what does "stopped working" mean?
It means when I drop down the volume slider and slide it, it makes no
difference at all in the output volume.
if I right-click that icon, it'll open up "Sound Preferences", which

Google Earth on EL6.x x86_64
Has anyone gotten 64-bit google earth to run on el6 x86_64?
It dies almost immediately, complaining for lack of ld-lsb.so.3.
Perusing user forums at google I see a few others with the problem,
but no (working) solutions.
Thanks in advance!
