Likely mem leak in 3.7
Starting with 3.7 rc1, my workstation seems to loose ram. Up until (and including) 3.6, used-(buffers+cached) was roughly the same as sum(rss) (taking shared into account). Now there is an approx 6G gap. When the box first starts, it is clearly less swappy than with <= 3.6; I can''t tell whether that is related. The reduced swappiness persists. It seems to get worse when I update

Version mismatch of Lustre client and server
Hello, I am planning on deploying a few more clients in my lustre environment and was wondering which client version to install. I know it is okay to run a newer client version than your lustre server for upgrade purposes. However, would it be okay to be in this state for a longer period of time (for the life of this filesystem)? My lustre server is currently running 1.8.1.1 on RHEL 5.3 and I

New 10Gbe adapter on lustre client brought down switch due to broadcast traffic
Hi Guys, I had a situation yesterday where I had a 10Gbe adapter on my lustre client configured but not active (the cable was plugged in and had link but the port was down) and this actually brought down our cisco switch. This is a new port that I am setting up. The reason why the switch went down was due to the amount of broadcast traffic coming from this port even though it was shutdown:

Puppet dashboard stuck pending jobs
Hi Guys, I am a new puppet user and wanted some type of monitoring for puppet so deployed puppet-dashboard. It has been working very well for a few days not, but all of a sudden I start getting pending tasks and they never finish even after restarting all processes. They keep accumulating and never seem to finish even though the clients are running fine. I have the puppet-dashboard

Manage a specific users shadow file entry
Hi Guys, I am new to puppet and trying to figure out what is the best way to manage a password for a specific user in the /etc/shadow file. Most of my users are being authenticated to kerberos but there is a need to set a local password for this one account. What would be the best method to do this via puppet? I have built my own rpm''s in the past using the chpasswd command but

[Bridge] Out of memory problem
Hi, I'm using linux 2.6.21.5 and our kernel is freeze. The problem is, if I create a Software bridge using $brctl command. and add two interfaces say, eth0.0 and eth0.1 using $brctl addbr br-lan $brctl addif br-lan eth0.0 $brctl addif br-lan eth0.1 and when i send traffic from a host connected to one port to host connected at other end, soon all the memory is dried up and and kernel

Dovecot Authentication to Windows Domain Controller
Hey Guys, I am trying to convince my co-workers to move from Exchange 2003 to a unix implementation of sendmai/dovecot. They have a couple of concerns that I am sure can be resolved. First, is there a way for dovecot running on a linux server to authenticate a user to a windows 2003 domain controller? If so, then where can I get information on how to implement and test this feature? Also, do

New Puppet User: Issues with pre-commit script
Hi Guys, I am new to puppet so please let me know if this is not the correct place for asking this question. I am setting up a new puppet environment running the latest 3.x version. I have the puppet master and client setup correctly and tested with deploying a simple file to the client. Now, I am working on adding all the configs to SVN since I will have all my users checkout the

a comparison of ext3, jfs, and xfs on hardware raid
I'm setting up a new file server and I just can't seem to get the expected performance from ext3. Unfortunately I'm stuck with ext3 due to my use of Lustre. So I'm hoping you dear readers will send me some tips for increasing ext3 performance. The system is using an Areca hardware raid controller with 5 7200RPM SATA disks. The RAID controller has 128MB of cache and the disks

write RPC & congestion
Hi, thanks for previous help. I have some question about Lustre RPC and the sequence of events that occur during large concurrent write() involving many processes and large data size per process. I understand there is a mechanism of flow control by credits, but I''m a little unclear on how it works in general after reading the "networking & io protocol" white paper. Is

gluster client performance
Hi- I'm new to Gluster, but am trying to get it set up on a new compute cluster we're building. We picked Gluster for one of our cluster file systems (we're also using Lustre for fast scratch space), but the Gluster performance has been so bad that I think maybe we have a configuration problem -- perhaps we're missing a tuning parameter that would help, but I can't find

Lustre buffer cache causes large system overhead.
We have just discovered that a large buffer cache generated from traversing a lustre file system will cause a significant system overhead for applications with high memory demands. We have seen a 50% slowdown or worse for applications. Even High Performance Linpack, that have no file IO whatsoever is affected. The only remedy seems to be to empty the buffer cache from memory by running

CPU usage from top
I'm seeing some strange results from top on CentOS 4.0. When it first starts, it reports low CPU usage. The next refresh (and subsequent) refreshes, it shows high CPU usage. In both cases, there is nothing shown in the process list that is using much CPU. What is causing this? Here is some truncated output from a single run of "top -b -n 2":

puppetmasterd continuously consuming high CPU, with many interrupts
So, I have a server at home that has four VMs running inside it. All are managed via puppet. The physical host runs puppetmasterd. I don''t recall noticing this before, but puppetmasterd has decided to be kind of crazy. Here''s the physical host with no puppetmasterd running: top - 11:36:15 up 271 days, 15:16, 1 user, load average: 5.68, 5.50, 6.45 Tasks: 129 total, 1
