mixed formatting of integer and numeric (e. g., by summary.default())
Hello, eveRybody,
I've been trying to find the origin for the following
formatting-"inconsistency":
E. g., look at the number of digits in summary.defaults()'s output when
NAs occur: in my example below the number of NA's is displayed as an
integer, the rest as numeric (floating point numbers):

User input after opening graphing device
If I run the following:

Continue (Yes = 1, No = 2):

it does not allow user input though the session is interactive (it jumps right over the readline command).

Cairo device won't output the PNG
Hi All,
I have been experiencing a strange issue ever since I upgraded my R and the packages. I cannot plot anything to the CairoPNG device.For an example:> Cairo(600, 600, file="plot.png", type="png", bg="white")> plot(1:10)> dev.off()will create an empty plot.png file. I am running R 2.12.1 (32bit) on Windows 7 (64bit).

readPNG gives warnings and doesn't execute sample code from help files
Dear all,
I noticed in the latest R version (R.2.12.1) that the readPNG gives
following warning when running the example code in the help file (or
when using any other png for that matter) :
50: In rasterImage(img, 1.2, 1.27, 1.8, 1.73) :
Per-pixel alpha not supported on this device
No picture is shown, and code I used to be able to run, doesn't run any more.

lubridate:ymd_hm and coercion of class POSIXct. Smooth way to restore the date format.
Dear all,
I wish to create a POSIXct variable from date and time variables using the ymd_hm function in package lubridate. In some cases data for time is missing, which causes a problem for ymd_hm. I wish to find a smooth way to handle this.
# Some example data:
x <- data.frame(date = c("2011-09-22", "2011-07-28"), time = c("15:00", NA))

strange problem with strptime and date variable
Hello all,
I am manipulating a large database with 70,000 records. "strptime" generates
a date variable but R treats some of the values as NA. I attach a simple
example below.
I have spent hours on this problem. Any hint would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Edwin Sun

Package check issue: Rprofile.site is not used
Dear R-users,
I am having some issues with a package I am working on (using R 2.12.1 in a
Linux environment) and would like to have your opinions/advises. My package
- let's call it mypackage for the purpose of this email - passes all checks
of R CMD check, except for the following failure message:

Change font size in Windows
My day for dumb questions. How do I increase the type size in the Rgui console in Windows? (R-2.13.0, Windows 7)
It looked to me that I just needed to change the font spec in Rconsole but that does not seem to be working.
The R FAQ for Windows has a reference in Q3.4 to changing fonts, (Q5.2), but I don't see anything relevant there.
Rconsole originally was:
font = TT Courier New

how to define functions in such a situation
hi R folks,
I need read a file from hardisk or www web. Then I need to define some
new functions according to the contents of the read file.
For example, i need write a package name "mypackage" like this:
>library(mypackage)
>read(some_file_on_web) #to see its content, suppose it contains:
eat.drink.sleep
then 3 new functions need to be created and usable.
the problem is, how

Multiple rms summary plots in a single device
I would like to incorporate multiple summary plots from the rms
package into a single device and to control the titles, and also to
open a new device when I reach a specified number of plots. Currently
I am only getting a single "plot(summary(" graph in the upper left-
hand corner of each successive device. However, in the rms
documention I see instances of a loop being used with

Sweave choking on \\ in filename
Dear all,
Sweave chokes when using "\\" in the path to the Rnw file. Using "/"
works fine. The problem is that Eclipse+StatET uses "\\" in the
filename.
And example of the error, traceback and sessionInfo are given below.
Best regards,

Simple order() data frame question.
Clearly, I don't understand what order() is doing and as ususl the help for order seems to only confuse me more. For some reason I just don't follow the examples there. I must be missing something about the data frame sort there but what?
I originally wanted to reverse-order my data frame df1 (see below) by aa (a factor) but since this was not working I decided to simplify and order by

changes in coxph in "survival" from older version?
Hi all,
I found that the two different versions of "survival" packages, namely 2.36-5
vs. 2.36-8 or later, give different results for coxph function. Please see
below and the data is attached. The second one was done on Linux, but Windows
gave the same results. Could you please let me know which one I should trust?
Thanks,

unique(1:3,nmax=1) freezes R
Dear all,
I was playing around with factor contrasts, and found the argument nmax on function factor. When using nmax=1, R froze completely, and I had to close it from task manager. After some debugging, I found that the problem is actually in unique-function, where the internal unique function is called:
.Internal(unique(x, incomparables, fromLast, nmax))
More generally, it looks like

Building latest version of package
Hi
I have a package which was built using R 1.9.1 and everything worked
fine. I recently upgraded to R 2.0.1 and tried to re-install my package
- and I got:
Error in library(mypackage) : 'mypackage' is not a valid package --
installed < 2.0.0?
So I tried rebuilding it using my new version of R:
R CMD BUILD --binary mypackage

cp: cannot stat `mypackage.chm': No
