Hardware serial number access from (a) command(s)
Over the weekend, I had to make a technical support call on one of my DVD burners, and at one point the recorded message mentioned I should have my serial number handy. I thought there was a way to read that from at least one piece of software on the system, but I couldn't remember one and man -k on a number of subjects was unrevealing. Can someone enlighten me (us)? Thanks. mhr

kernel panic - spin_lock
Guys, one of our boxes just died with the following error: kernel panic - not syncing: fs/block_dev.c:396: spin_lock (fs/block_dev.c:c0361c0) already locked by fs/block_dev.c/287. The system's an LVS running CentOS 4.3: centos-release-4-3.2 kernel-2.6.9-34.EL ipvsadm-1.24-6 heartbeat-1.2.3.cvs.20050927-1.centos4 I note that there's a bug report filed related to CentOS 4.2:

[PATCH node] split root filesystems out of HostVG and onto their own partitions

remove revalidate_disk()
Hi Jens, this series removes the revalidate_disk() function, which has been a really odd duck in the last years. The prime reason why most people use it is because it propagates a size change from the gendisk to the block_device structure.
