X11 font at size 6 could not be loaded
I recently upgraded my OS to Fedora 8 from Red Hat Enterprise Work Station 3. Before I upgraded certain operations would produce a warning to the effect that a desired font was not available so one had been substituted, which was okay. After the upgrade to Fedora 8, the plotting operation halts midway through and I get the following error message: "X11 font at size 6 could not be loaded"

fonts on centos 4 and 5
I am running centos 4.x and 5 x86_64 and using the script below and the slider bar at the bottom I cannot get fonts bigger than 50. someone else posted a followup and said he has the same issue. What can be happening here??? xlsfonts shows that bigger fonts are available. How can I get bigger fonts??? Note - I had to do a "yum install tk" also... Thanks, Jerry

evince not showing "greek" and "math" in *.pdf plots
I see. Peter, you are right about the font that causes the issue. Paul, thanks for your insights. I'll bring this to the Fedora font experts to see if we can arrive at a more permanent fix. I'll report back with any conclusion. @Martin: Meanwhile, at least you have options. One is to embed the fonts, either as Peter suggested or using cairo_pdf instead. Alternatively, Peter also has shown

addenda to wordperfect
I did find a say to get to the directory holding wpwin9 and it strarted but then froze with the splash screen. Not sure how to get the error message in here; seems to have to do with the keyboard and X11driver; hope I am abusing this bulletin board, but I am hoping someone can help me with the next step. Thanks

SQLDF - Submitting Queries with R Objects as Columns
Fellow R programmers, I'd like to submit SQLDF statements with R objects as column names. For example, I want to assign "X" to "var1" (var1<-"X") and then refer to "var1" in the SQLDF statement. SQLDF needs to understand that when I reference "var1", it should look for "X" in the dataframe. This is necessary because my SQLDF

Maple, MathCad, Greek letters (was: Greek letters)
Hi. I was having trouble getting Greek letters and mathematical symbols in maple under wine, and a search turned up a few messages suggesting others have the same problem. In particular, Thomas Koenig wrote... http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-users/2001/04/0028.html > I wrote: > > >I have tried several applications which use Greek letters, such as > >Maple V R5 and

One possible cause for incorrect symbols in X11() output
There have been spasmodic reports of symbols such as pi and infinity in plotmath being reproduced incorrectly on the X11 device on some Linux systems (at least Ubuntu 10 and Fedora 12/13), and we've managed to track down one cause whilst investigating PR#14355. Some systems have Wine and hence the Wine symbol font installed. 'fontconfig', which is used by cairographics in

possible bug: dev.copy / could not find any X11 fonts
Hi, I am experiencing something strange, and thought I would ask before reporting a bug. I trimmed it down to a self-contained example, attached as an R file. The purpose of the functions is to save the plots into a ps file and simultaneously plot them on an x11 device, but don't open a new one if there is already one opened (I don't want the repositioning / flicker). When running the

Plotmath on Fedora 31 broken with with pango >= 1.44 - workarounds?
Dear list On Fedora 31 the pango library has recently updated to version >= 1.44 and in doing so has switched to using the HarfBuzz library (from FreeType) and dropped Adobe Type 1 font support. This causes problems with plotmath as all bar one of the glyphs doesn't render (see attached PNG image if it makes it through the list filters - if not I have shared a copy via my google drive:

Wine and fonts (...unknown registry...)
Hello NG, my Wine ran fine so far. As I installed new fonts yesterday (type1 converted out of MS truetypes) to use them with StarOffice 5.2 Wine only starts with a lot of fonts failures and exits with failure code 1. Below is an extract out of the messages. Can anybody help me with that? I already replaced my ~/.wine directory and let winesetup create a new one - nothing changed. I replaces

Graphics device hook to manipulate plotmath
Is there a hook that allows a graphics device to apply transformations to plotmath expressions *before* they are rendered? If there isn't one yet, would it be feasible to add one? The motivation for this hook is graphic devices that feed into something that already has support for math layout, such as the tikzDevice package (which has TeX downstream). Given text(x, y,

evince not showing "greek" and "math" in *.pdf plots
Hi I don't think this is an R issue (it is separate from the Cairo Symbol font problem). For PDF output, R actually relies on the Symbol font having the Adobe Symbol Encoding (Appendix D of the PDF Reference https://opensource.adobe.com/dc-acrobat-sdk-docs/pdfstandards/pdfreference1.7old.pdf) and just outputs the font as "Symbol", which relies on it being one of the Standard

Latex \ell symbol in plotmath
Is it possible to use the '\ell' (i.e. the log likelihood) in plots? I've been browsing the plotmath documentation unsucesfully. embedding fonts in eps files
Hi, I have to make eps files with fonts embedded. I use the following postscript command: postscript("fig3a.eps", width = 5.2756, height = 7.27, pointsize = 7,horizontal = FALSE, onefile = FALSE, paper = "special",family = "Times") plot(...) dev.off() Are fonts automatically embedded in this way? How can I see that? If not, how to do it? regards, Rudi.

Pango/cairo and symbol fonts
Excuse my asking here than on R-help, but it may be a Fedora question. On Fedora 7, I'm running a fresh R 2.7.1 built from source, usually in en_GB, but also tried in en_GB.UTF8. Running example(plotmath) generates lots of: Pango-WARNING **: shape engine failure, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Symbol Not-Rotated ...' Setting: x11(type="Xlib") relieves the

evince not showing "greek" and "math" in *.pdf plots
Martin, I wouldn't rule out an R issue yet. Fonts are... tricky. So I'm cc'ing Paul Murrell here. I tried several viewers here and I see the following: Chrome, Firefox and Libreoffice Draw show the symbols; however, evince, okular and xournal++ agree on **not** showing the symbols. **If** there is a bug, the bug would be in fontconfig, because these ones AFAIK properly delegate on
