CRAN: Update protocol buffers on macOS? (for RProtoBuf)
Hi,
I notice that the CRAN binary for the macOS version of RProtoBuf is
built against quite an old version of protocol buffers (from 2014,
before v3 format support was added).
the windows version is (blessedly) kept up-to-date, but I'd like to
float the suggestion that the macOS version get an update too.
with thanks

On RObjectTables
I was wondering if anyone knows more about the state of RObjectTables. This
largely undocumented functionality was introduced by Duncan around 2002
somewhere and enables you create an environment where the contents are
dynamically queried by R through a hook function. It is mentioned in R
Internals and ?attach. This functionality is quite powerful and allows you
to e.g. offload a big database of R

LinkingTo and C++
Hello,
I've been trying to make LinkingTo work when the package linked to has
c++ code.
I've put dumb packages to illustrate this emails here ;
http://addictedtor.free.fr/misc/linkingto
Package A defines this C++ class:
class A {
public:
A() ;
~A() ;
SEXP hello() ;
} ;
Package B has this function :
SEXP say_hello(){
A a ;
return a.hello() ;
}
headers of package A are copied

Fast way to determine number of lines in a file
Hi all,
Is there a fast way to determine the number of lines in a file? I'm
looking for something like count.lines analogous to count.fields.

getConnection, R_outpstream_st
Hello,
I'm trying to use the limited connections api defined in Rinternals.h. I
have code that looks like this (inspired from do_serializeToConn) :
SEXP serialize_to_connection( SEXP xp, SEXP connection ){
Rconnection con ;
struct R_outpstream_st out;
R_pstream_format_t type = R_pstream_binary_format ;
SEXP (*hook)(SEXP, SEXP) = NULL ;
con = getConnection(Rf_asInteger(connection));

Problems with r-cran-rcurl in Trusty and Vivid. (Re: Install R on Ubuntu with libcurl support)
Hello everybody,
by the way, speaking about the r-cran-rcurl package in Ubuntu, the versions in
trusty and vivid are linked by error to the "NSS" flavour of libcurl3 instead
of the "OpenSSL flavour", which cause at least problems when using the CRAN
devtools package. A bit more details are available in the Debian bug tracking
system (https://bugs.debian.org/786473). I am not

PANIC: assert failed.
Hi all,
We are using Samba 2.0.0beta5 on HP-UX 10.20 systems. We also use encryption and password checking on the NT 4 boxes. Everything works fine except for a few persons. When connecting to a samba share from an NT 4 client they get "unexpected network error". The contents of the last part of the samba log file are:
[1999/06/01 16:04:45, 0] rpc_parse/parse_net.c:(1023)

configure script: locking error
When I try to run the configure script I get the following error:
ERROR: No locking available. Running Samba would be unsafe
I searched the samba archives and found another instance of the same error, but
I don't get the same errors in my config.log file, so I think it is a somewhat
different problem. Instead, I get stuff like:
configure:8622: checking for fcntl locking
