super basic questions about S4 classes
Apologies for asking something that is probably super obvious, i just started
with S4 classes and i guess i am not finding documentation that layout the
grammar rules and give enough examples. Some questions i am having are these
1. I understand that main method of writing a member function is to write a
generic function and setMethod for this particular object. This, however,

Problem using ofstream in C++ class in package for MacOS X
Dear all,
I am currently learning how to create R packages using C++ classes.
For this purpose I have written a small package MyClass (which I try
to attach since I do not have access to a website).
MyClass has methods WriteFileC() and WriteFileCpp() which implement
C-style and C++-style writing of a table to a file using FILE or
ofstream respectively, and the corresponding R-functions

assigning NULLs to elements of a list
Dear developers:
I have just came across an (unexpected to me) behaviour of lists when
assigning NULLs to list elements. I understand that a NULL is a valid R
object, thus assigning a NULL to a list element should yield exactly the
same result as assigning any other object. So I was surprised when
assigning a NULL in fact removed the element from the list. Is this an
intended behaviour? If

as.POSIXct/as.POSIXlt generics
Hi,
I am trying to define the as.POSIXct as an S4 method for one of my
classes. Trying to define a generic, I am getting an error that it is
already differently defined in base. However, if I query for it, there
is no definition. Being in base, I also cannot really import it. If I
define methods without definig a generic, they will work but with a
warning that a new generic will be automatically

ISOdate/ISOdatetime performance suggestions, other date/time questions
Dear list:
working with date/times I have come across a problem that ISOdate and
ISOdatetime are too slow on large vectors of data. I was surprised just
until I looked at the implementation and the man page: "ISOdatetime and
ISOdate are convenience wrappers for strptime". In other terms, they
convert data to character representation first in order to create a
POSIXlt object that is then

consistent segfaults in ROracle with one of the databases
Dear list.
Has anybody had any issues with ROracle, namely consistently leading to
a segmentation fault? One of our oracle databases seems to have certain
issues at the moment (do not know what exactly though) and if that one
is queried ROracle definitely fails with a segmentation fault. Any
ideas? Here is the trace and below is also a type of query that crashes
it:

graphics::Axis loosing S3/S4 class attributes of 'x' in 2.7.0 RC
Following my previous post on S3 method despatch, I put debug messages
in the code of Axis, Axis.default and plot.default in graphics/R/axis.R
and graphics/R/plot.R to print the class of x, at and y on plot. After
recompiling R, what I see is that x *lost* its class attribute (at least
for classes not known to 'graphics') in Axis, called directly from
plot.default and this could be the

Dear All:
We have been experiencing networking issues so I don't know if this
got through; I can't see it in the archive. My sincere apologies if
this appears twice.
I may have found an unusual bug and am posting here to see if anyone
can reproduce it on their system. First of all, sessionInfo():

Bug in R -e "command"
Hi all:
since about a month we encountered a problem with R -e command: spaces
in the "command" of R -e "command" are no more tolerated. This same
issue affects 2.11 patched (05-05-2010), 2.10.1, and current devel (at
least the one of two weeks ago).

likely bug in 'serialize' or please explain the memory usage
Hi all,
assume the following problem: a function call takes a function object
and a data variable and calls this function with this data on a remote
host. It uses serialization to pass both the function and the data via a
socket connection to a remote host. The problem is that depending on the
way we call the same construct, the function may be serialized to
include the data, which was not

include S4 class and methods in a package
DeaR list,
Pardon the stupidity of this question but I've been trying this for a
while now without success.
I've followed the example given in the green book "programming with
data", and I now have a working example of a S4 class with a few
methods (plot, summary, as.data.frame). It's all very nice in one
file, but I cannot find the way to put this information in a

sessionInfo() fails to correctly detect locale settings
Dear R devels
Yesterday I was slightly surprised to notice that R incorrectly
detected some of the locale settings. I am not sure whether this is
important, but I preferred to drop a message. In the R output below,
some entries that should have been "en_GB.UTF-8" are presented as "C".

S4 generic masking S3 generic when using namespace
Hi,
I have two example packages, test1 and test2, where the only code in
them is:
setGeneric("predict", function(object, ...) standardGeneric("predict"))
(get them from http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~gabraham/test1.tar and
http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~gabraham/test2.tar)
The difference between them is that first does not have a namespace, and
loads fine. The second has a namespace

Locale problems on Solaris
Hi there.
With OpenSSH 3.0.2p1 on Solaris, the locale does not appear to get set

LC_MESSAGES=C

R CMD check not reading R_LIBS from ~/.R/check.Renviron
Dear List,
Further to my earlier email, I note that, for me at least, R CMD check
is *not* reading R_LIBS from ~/.R/check.Renviron on R 2.15.2 patched
(r61228) and R Under Development (r61660). The only way I can get R CMD
check to look for packages in a user-supplied library is by explicitly
exporting R_LIBS set to the relevant directory.
R CMD build *does* read R_LIBS from ~/.R/build.Renviron

I get a plot with a title having uppercase delta followed by "D". But in

Fonts do not display properly in R 2.5.1 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
Dear All
I posted a similar question quite some time ago, but that was on an old
OS and an old version of R. This time I have RHEL 4, which is still
supported as an OS, and R 2.5.1 which is not *that* old.
My sessionInfo() gives:
