using the name of an argument in a function
Hi all, In a function, I need to get the name of a variable that has been used to call the function. For example, I want: --- 8< ------ toto <- 3 fun <- function(y){ nameOfY <-deparse(substitute(y)) cat("name is ",nameOfY) } fun(toto) # [1] name is toto --- 8< ---- But deparse(substitute(y)) does not work all the time, especially when we use generic function.

require( "foo (>= 2.1)" )
Hello, I often find myself writing code like : if( require( "foo" ) && compareVersion( packageDescription( "foo")[["Version"]], "2.1" ) < 0 ){ # code that uses version 2.1 of foo } else { stop( "could not load version >= 2.1 of foo" ) } Would it make sense to include something like this in require, library, etc ... require(

Use of R and Rscript in configure/Makevars in packages
We have seen problems with a number of packages which use R/Rscript to run R code in configure or makefiles. (a) You must give a full path: there need be no version of R in the path, and if there is it might not be the version/build of R under which package installation is being done. So the general form is to use ${R_HOME}/bin/R to select the right version. And since ${R_HOME} might

S4 inheritance and old class
Hey everyone, I would like to develop a package using S4 classes. I have to define several S4 classes that inherits from each others as follow: # A <- B <- C <- D I also would like to define .DollarNames methods for these class so, if I have understood well, I also have to define an old class as follow: # AOld <- A <- B <- C <- D setOldClass(Classes = "AOld")

Package "datasets" not exporting anything on a recent R-2.15.1-patched
Hi, I just stumbled on the following apparent oddity: the package "datasets" does not appear to export anything out of its namespace: > ns_datasets <- getNamespace('datasets') > getNamespaceExports(ns_datasets) character(0) Not the case with other packages (example here with "utils"): > ns_utils <- getNamespace('utils') >

Help on loading "xlsx" package
Dear R users, Im trying to load *"xlsx"* package which depends on *"xlsxjars"* and * "rJava"* packages. All the 3 packages (zipped files) are installed successfully in windows. I have added "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\client" to the PATH variable to get rJava working. However, the following error message results after inputting

Autocompletion for the new S3 generic @ method?
I agree, this is a good idea and would be very helpful in interactive contexts. I have a draft patch implementing this feature here: https://github.com/r-devel/r-svn/pull/122 (Append ?.patch? to the URL to get a raw patch.) exporting methods/classes
Dear R People: I'm still struggling with sending methods and classes as part of creating a new package. Where does the .onLoad function go? Within R itself or in a file in one of the new package directories? Here are my latest efforts: Here's the last part of the woof1-Ex.Rout > library('woof1') Error in loadNamespace(package, c(which.lib.loc, lib.loc), keep.source =

O/T good c/c++ code for LU decomposition
Dear R People: Could someone recommend a good c/c++ code (or Fortran) for LU decomposition, please? Sorry to bother about this. I'm trying to do some "non-R" work that requires a matrix inversion. S4 method dispatch sometimes leads to incorrect when object loaded from file?
Loading an S4 object from a file without first loading the library sometimes (?, the example below and actual example involves a virtual base class and the show generic) leads to incorrect dispatch (to the base class method). The attached package reproduces the problem. It has setClass("A") setClass("B", contains="A") setMethod("show", "A",

Autocompletion for the new S3 generic @ method?
Hello, In the current R-devel @ is S3 generic, so we can do things like - for example - use it to extract matrix rows by name: .S3method("@", "mm", function(object, name) object[name,]) m <- structure(matrix(rnorm(20), ncol=2), dimnames=list(paste0("row", 1:10), paste("col", 1:2)), class="mm") m at row1 However, seems like

Questions about name space directives
Hi, I'm hoping to get some clarification of the intent of some of directives used in NAMESPACE files. 1. Is import(somePkg) also intended to import all classes and methods that are exported via exportClasses and exportMethods in somePkg? I think import pulls in classes and methods, but it isn't clear from the docs whether this is as intended. 2. What is exportMethods intended

Imports/exports of S4 methods
I have a question about what to do in the following situation (please bear with the setup): Package A defines an S4 generic 'foo' and as well as S4 methods for 'foo' and has exportMethods("foo") in its NAMESPACE file. Package B defines another method for 'foo' for class "bar" and has importFrom(A, "foo") exportMethods("foo")

Bug in parseNamespaceFile or switch( , ... ) ?
parseNamespaceFile() doesn't seem to detect misspelled directives. Looking at its code I see switch(as.character(e[[1L]]), <lots of args omitted here>, stop(gettextf("unknown namespace directive: %s", deparse(e)), call. = FALSE, domain = NA)) but this doesn't seem to function as I expect, viz. to stop with an error if I type a wrong directive.

strange behaviour of importFrom directive in name space
Dear listers, After activating the name space for my bioconductor package (prada) I successfully ran R CMD check. However when loading the package in R and running the examples the imported function brewer.pal from package RColorBrewer is not found. I can directly call brewer.pal from the RColorBrewer name space typing RColorBrewer::brewer.pal, but it is not imported into my prada name space. When
