How to use read.table with Hebrew column names ?
Hello dear R help group, I am trying to read a .txt file, with Hebrew column names, while keeping the column names looking well in R - but without success. I uploaded an example file to: http://www.talgalili.com/files/aa.txt And am trying the command: read.table("http://www.talgalili.com/files/aa.txt", header = T, sep = "\t") This returns me with: X.....ª X...ª......

Wrong links in help help files? (PR#14155)
Dear R developers, ?help.search ...opens a tab in my browser (Firefox 3.5.6, Win XP): http://127.0.0.1:31642/library/utils/html/help.search.html When I click on the link for "?", (http://127.0.0.1:31642/library/utils/help/?) in the last line of "Details", I get an error message: "Server error: invalid response from R". Similarly, The link to "??"

help text for xlim
Dear R-developers, A student asked me today of how to specify the limits of the x-axis. I knew that he should use xlim, but I tried to encourage him to have a try himself with the various help functions. I do not judge if he used the correct search strategy or right key words, but anyway here is what he tried: he looked at ?plot. There xlim is not mentioned. He checked ?par. There you find

grid unit bug? (PR#14220)
The following seems to me to be at least a perverse trap, if not an = outright bug: > is.numeric(unit(1,"npc")) [1] TRUE > is.numeric(1*unit(1,"npc")) [1] FALSE > is.numeric(unit(0,"npc") +unit(1,"npc")) [1] FALSE ...etc. i.e. is.numeric() appears to be TRUE for class "unit" but false for = class ("unit.arithmetic"

Use of processor by R 32bit on a 64bit machine
Dear all, I've recently purchased a new 64bit system with an intel i7 quadcore processor. As I understood (maybe wrongly) that to date the 32bit version of R is more stable than the 64bit, I installed the 32bit version and am happily using it ever since. Now I'm running a whole lot of models, which goes smoothly, and I thought out of curiosity to check how much processor I'm using. I

Esteemed R Users, Would some one be patient enough to explain the variation i see when creating .pdf file output for my plots? I have Ghostscript v8.71 installed and in the Path such that

How should a SelfStart function handle illegal parameter values?
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to write selfStart non-linear models for use with nls. In these models some combinations of parameter values are illegal; the function value is undefined. That's OK when calling the function directly [e.g. SSmodel(x, pars...)]; I return an appropriate non-value such as NA or Inf. However, when called from nls [e.g. nls(y~SSmodel(x, pars...), ...)] those

read.table & readLines behaviour?
Hi, I have been using 'read.table' regularly to read tab-delimited text files with data. No problem, until now. Now I have a file that appeared to have read fine, and the data inside looks correct (structure etc), except I only had 15000+ rows out of the expected 24000. Using 'readLines' instead, and breaking up the data by tabs, gives me the expected result. I do not

This was working a few weeks ago, but perhaps the package has been updated since then. model.1 <- lrm(response ~ p_value, data=c_abl_oncogene_1_RTK) When I run the following command . . . . prediction.1 <- predict(model.1, type=c("fitted")) I get the following error message. . . . How to use nls when [selfStart] function returns NA or Inf??
Hi Everyone, I posted this a couple of weeks ago with no responses. My interface (via gmane) seemed a bit flakey at the time, so I'm venturing to repost with some additional information. I'm trying to write selfStart non-linear models for use with nls. In these models some combinations of parameter values are illegal; the function value is undefined. That's OK when calling the

Embed Fonts in All EPS files inside a Directory
Hi List, I would like to embed some fonts (AFM format) on 324 eps files produced by a R loop, I’m able to do so one-by-one with the following command: embedFonts('C:/Users/Rodrigo/Documents/UFPR/Micropaleontologia/Potiguar/Cata logo/Mapas/EPS/Example.eps', outfile='C:/Users/Rodrigo/Documents/UFPR/Micropaleontologia/Potiguar/Catalog o/Mapas/EPS/Example2.eps',

nls with plinear and function on RHS
Dear R gurus, As part of finding initial values for a much more complicated fit I want to fit a function of the form y ~ a + bx + cx^d to fairly "noisy" data and have hit some problems. To demonstrate the specific R-related problem, here is an idealised data set, smaller and better fitting than reality: # idealised data set aDF <- data.frame( x= c(1.80, 9.27, 6.48, 2.61, 9.86,

Problem with loading rJava in R
Hello. I am trying to load the rJava package in R-2.7.2 (Windows XP 64-bit RGui) and get the following error message even though the mentioned .dll file is located at the directory listed in the error message. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the package but that does not resolve the problem. Then uninstallation and re-installation of R did not resolve the issue either. Any suggestions are

Write.fwf works from Mac, throws different number of row error in Windows
Hello, I am having a problem with write.fwf in Windows. I wrote a code to ingest a number of text files with weather data in them, process them, and then output a text file with two parts: 1) a set of column names, 2) the processed data table. I wrote and tested the program on my Mac, and it worked fine. However, on the windows machine, where I intend the work to be done, when I run the

Can't load "doSMP" from REvolutionR in regular R2.11.0
Hi list, I was testing out the "doSMP" package from REvolutionR in my regular R2.11.0 installation and I got the following error message.? Well, one obvious thing is that R2.11.0 was built using "i386-pc-mingw32" which is different from what revoIPC used.? I could just use REvolutionR, but all my R peripherals were set up to work with the regular R2.11.0.? So, I really want
