Windows installer, HTML help, R 2.10.0
I'm not 100% sure this hasn't been covered already (I searched a bit,
but I had a little trouble filtering down to a useful number of useful
results). Anyway, when I install R on Windows, the installer asks to
set the default help type. For some reason, I can set it as HTML in
the installer, but the results open as if help_type = "text" by
default. I presume this is related to

make.packages.html
It used to be that, whenever I added or updated a new package, the
file /usr/lib/R/doc/html/packages.html would be updated (on Linux).
Now I find that this does not happen anymore. So I found this
function make.packages.html, which seems to do what I think should be
done automatically. But it puts its output in a file in /tmp/...,
which I then have to move, in an extra step, to where it should

help.search() in html?
Hi,
I have options(help_type="html") in my .Rprofile and when I type
?foo, the man page appears as a new tab in my web browser (which is
already running). Fine. However, when I type ??foo, rather than the
results appearing in a new tab, a new instance of the web browser is
spawned with the default homepage displayed. Same with
help.search("foo"). Am I the only one seeing this?

help manual on R on ESS
Hi folks,
R on ESS
Why it is unable to pop up help manual on "R on ESS"?
?layout
Error in help("layout", htmlhelp = FALSE) :
unused argument(s) (htmlhelp = FALS
?plot
Error in help("plot", htmlhelp = FALSE) :
unused argument(s) (htmlhelp = FALSE)
etc.
But they work on R console and popup the manual without problem. TIA
B.R.

Error: C stack usage is too close to the limit
I get this error on one computer running Fedora Core 5 but not on
another one, when I start R from Xemacs using ESS. After I get
the error with Xemacs, I get it even without using Xemacs. I
haven't tried all possibilities, because I have found discussion
of this problem on the R-devel mailing list, so clearly some
people understand it. (Not me.) I'm posting here in case

qplot in ggplot2 not working any longer - (what did I do?)
This is the first time that I have tried to update packages with a
tinkered around with .Rprofile. I start R with R --vanilla and it
does not load my .Rprofile, but when I issue the command
update.packages() R downloads the packages as expected, but then seems
to load .Rprofile before compiling the packages sources. What am I
doing wrong?

HTML help files missing for some packages
After a clean install of R 4.0.0 (R-base only) on Mint 19.3, the
directory /usr/lib/R/library/base/html is empty. However, the directory
/usr/lib/R/library/boot/html contains files 00Index.html and R.css.
Correspondingly, the command help(package="base", help_type="html")
produces the text "No package index found for package base". The same

help.start() works with Mozilla, but not with ESS
In a recent post, I reported that help.start worked with Mozilla,
although it had not worked before. I now have discovered the
difference. I'm using RH Linux 7.1 and Mozilla 0.9.5 and R
1.3.1.
When I tried it before, I had use ESS to start R. If I run R
without ESS, help.start() will start the browser (Mozilla), but
help(apply), for example, will produce help in ESS but not in the
browser.

installing R on Fedora Core 2 test 2
Just a report for those who want to try this. (Executive
summary: It eventually worked.)
The RPM for Fedora Core 1 did not work because it wanted
libtcl8.3.so and libtk8.3.so, while this distribution had 8.4
instead of 8.3. I didn't try making soft links, thus pretending
that it had 8.3. (I'm planning to install the final version of
Core 2 when it comes out soon. This is a computer I

Error w/ Start up Script
I noticed about a couple weeks ago that my R start up script starting showing the below errors, following the line "Type 'q()' to quit R"
Not sure what I did different and so far it hasn't caused major problems but kind of fear that it will.
Can you please help?
I also posted my Rprofile below.

help with help()
Hi all
Just this morning I upgraded to R 2.12.0 (for Mac OS X 10.6.4).
All went well until I needed to run a help() or help.search() in my session,
which I'm running within Emacs (ESS 5.3.7).
Say I need help with the command 'density'. When I type
help(density)
or
?density
the ESS help buffer opens, it is titled *help[R](density)* but it contains
only a couple of lines saying,

All,

information that would be helpful in figuring out this problem (I don't
know the relevant information to post). I am on linux- see below for

help in a separate window under linux
Hi there.
R v1.3.0, Slackware linux 7.1 or Windows 98SE, PII 266, 64Mb RAM.
I notice that under windows, R puts help info (ie. the response to
'?<function>') into a new window, whereas under linux, it puts it into the
main console window. I find the former much more helpful when checking a
function's syntax.
Is there a simple way of configuring R under linux to put its help

hetlp_type text doen't work on Ubuntu
Hi,
I' using Ubuntu 10.10/11.04 and on both of the systems help doesn't
work unless I set options(help_type="html"). I hate to change context
and help_type='html' distracts me. I want text based help inside
console. Where should I look to fix this problem?

Error in formatDL(nm, txt, indent = max(nchar(nm, "w")) + 3)
This error can arise when getOption("width") is too small. 80 seems to be the
limit for me with R-3.3.2 on Windows.

starting html help for a package?
Dear all
Shouldn't this start the html help for the chosen package?

Instead, the text version is displayed in less (I believe). However, I
have no issues to start the html help with the following.

printing html help to the terminal
I'm trying to get help to print the help pages in html format to the
terminal. This is in order to be able to see the html help files remotely.
If I do
printURL = function(file) {a=readLines(url(file));cat(a,sep="\n")}
options(browser=printURL)
options(help_type="html")
then invoking help with
?print
gets stuck. I think what happens is that the web server run by R that
