Macintosh binaries; was: Rcmdr and Macintosh
I am a Windows user and trying to make life easier for my Mac-using students. After investigating the Mac situation more, it appears that the key to easy use is having precompiled binaries. However the packages I am interested in (Rcmdr and its required package, car) do not have one. I do not have easy access to a Mac, so I have a plea to Macintosh users: could someone please create them if it is

Samba And Macintosh(netatalk)
Hello, Anyone out there running a production network supporting PC and Macintosh clients using samba and netatalk. we are currently using NT 4.0 with AppleTalk-IP software. Sharing the same files with the Macs and the pc is a must. I read someplace that samba 2.2.2 supports Appletalk. Is this true? Thanks, Joe

Macintosh version of R not on CRAN
Is there any reason the Macintosh version of R is not available on CRAN? I downloaded a copy of 0.64 from Ross Ihaka's ftp site and it seems stable. [LLVMdev] Dynamically adding exception frames in the macintosh OS X
Hi I am porting a JIT compiler to the Macintosh. This software runs under windows and Linux. In both systems there is an interface for adding exception frames dynamically when you add code compiled on the fly. Under linux the (not documented) gcc function __register_frame_info does the trick. Under windows, Microsoft has added an official API for this, that works without problems. The

Macintosh OS 9.2 and SMB Networks
Some use Dave (http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html) or DoubleTalk (http://www.connectix.com/products/dt.html). However, we use Netatalk (http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/) successfully to share the Unix/Samba file system with our Mac clients. Is there any reason you can't use Netatalk? data import (on macintosh)
I think the problem is the way files are named on the Macintosh. On the Mac, the file separator character, which is "/" on unix and "\" on dos/windows, is ":". Also, the root directory doesn't start with the separator character, but instead just starts with the volume name, which is the name of the hard disk icon on your desktop, so if your file is in the top

Base package R Macintosh port
Hi everybody I was trying the R binary (1.7.0) for Macintosh (Carbon) and I tried to install some packages using "install.packages" and apparently this function was not implemented. I reloaded the base library since the "update.packages" function should be on it but did not work. Also I tried read.table and did not work either. Does anybody know if the base package

Trouble installing packages on Macintosh OS-X 10.5.6
I just upgraded my version of R from 2.8.1 to 2.9.0. After doing so, I now have problems using the package installer to reinstall all my packages. Some download and install without problems, but for others, I get the spinning pinwheel and after even 10 minutes, nothing is downloaded. R stops responding. At first, I had not deleted the old version of 2.8.1 before installing 2.9.0. However, I

Macintosh + Samba integration
I have been searching through the docs and on the web to no avail. I work at a university and we are moving our fileservers to new hardware. The problem is, nothing seems to integrate Mac's and Win box's happily. We have a large user base using samba already, but when mac's pick up the same share via CAP, CAP creates files to deal with the dual 'stream' nature of files from a

Xten SIP client for Macintosh OSX
[this post is just as much for the archives as it is for immediate consumption] Somehow I had completely missed the announcement that XTen Networks had released a SIP client for Mac OSX. Well, they have. It seems to mostly work, even! Very cool. The User interface leaves something to be desired, with it's menus trying to force me to use cell-phone sized windows (!!!!) to manipulate

Which Authentication Method Best Between FreeBSD and Macintosh?
I recently discovered that I need to occasionally forward Email from a FreeBSD system to a Macintosh. Imap does look like the best solution to this problem. The mail program on the Mac lists several protocols such as pop (okay with me) and SSL certificates which I want to avoid if at all possible. Which of the several listed methods of authentication should I compile in as I build dovecot on the

Samba vs. Macintosh
Hello, do you know about that kind of problem: I've tried to connect an apple macintosh os x (10.2.4) to my linux samba-server (take a look to my smb.conf in the attachement), but i've only got a connection to my homedirectory. If I tried to connect to my other shares, i got only the error message 5023. Do you may know that problem???? It would be very nice to here from you..

Macintosh sandbox denying access folder
Hi all, Have any of you had experience with macintosh's sandbox denying access to a folder served by Samba? I don't know exactly how to reproduce, so here's everything (?): I'm running macOS Catalina (10.15.1). In the terminal I start a python command interpreter. python # then >>>import os # then I repeatedly list a directory others have been having problems

RSYNC/FreeBSD/Macintosh files...
I am wanting to rsync over mac files to a freebsd 4.5 box, but have recently found out that rsync does not preserve resource forks, or creator types and maybe some other things. But, has anybody had any experience like this, would tar'ing the files and then rsync'ing that seem a worthwhile solution. There's a lot, so testing is going slowly. Thanks! macintosh metadata madness
Like many other Mac OSX users, I have found it frustrating that rsync is not as usable as one would like it to be on OSX. I've posted some software on my website that I find useful, and that others may find useful as well. It provides tools that allow one to access and manipulate OSX metadata, and in particular, to backup (and restore) this metadata to a non-OSX, unix machine (using
