file.link on Windows 7
Hello,
A post to R-Help by Oliver Soong reports what seems to be a bug specific
to Windows (I'm on Windows 7).

Cannot activate chm help in R 2.10
Dear all,
I just tried to be fast for once, installed R 2.10 and also newly installed
all previously-installed packages. However, now all my help files are text
only, which is of course a pity with the new possibilities of links between
help pages. What can I do to re-activate chm-help? chm-help does not work
for anything, not even base functionality.
My system is Windows XP, German locale

2.7.0 graphics changes and png devices
Hi,
I have a question about the graphics changes in 2.7.0. The example is
this bit of code:
par(mfcol = c(2, 3))
for(i in 1:6) plot(1:10, 1:10, xlab = "xlab", ylab = "ylab", main = "main")
In 2.7.0, if I do this interactively (using windows()), I get bold
titles. If I do this through a png device, I get regular weight
titles. If I do this in 2.6.2, both

help.search() in html?
Hi,
I have options(help_type="html") in my .Rprofile and when I type
?foo, the man page appears as a new tab in my web browser (which is
already running). Fine. However, when I type ??foo, rather than the
results appearing in a new tab, a new instance of the web browser is
spawned with the default homepage displayed. Same with
help.search("foo"). Am I the only one seeing this?

HTML help files missing for some packages
After a clean install of R 4.0.0 (R-base only) on Mint 19.3, the
directory /usr/lib/R/library/base/html is empty. However, the directory
/usr/lib/R/library/boot/html contains files 00Index.html and R.css.
Correspondingly, the command help(package="base", help_type="html")
produces the text "No package index found for package base". The same
occurs when clicking

I am trying to run Tinn R for the first time with R. I have already
selected the SDI option. When ever I run the code I get the following

Can any one help?

R 2.11, shell, spaces
Can somebody confirm some unexpected behavior? This is under Windows,
with R 2.11.0 and 2.11.1.
1. Create a trivial test file (I called it test.R) containing:
cat("Success.\n")
2. Load R (Gui or Term) and run:
shell("\"C:\\path\\to\\Rscript.exe\" \"C:\\path\\to\\test.R\"")
In my case, I get various error messages. If the
path\\to\\Rscript.exe has spaces

request to make --enable-prebuilt-html the default build on linux
I don't understand the advantages of generating html help dynamically,
but I have found some clear disadvantages.
One is that I can no longer use a bookmark in my browser to access the
list of packages and go from there to individual help pages.
The other is that, if I try to use ESS instead (using
options(help_type="html") in .Rprofile) - it is a mess. ESS splits

qplot in ggplot2 not working any longer - (what did I do?)
This is the first time that I have tried to update packages with a
tinkered around with .Rprofile. I start R with R --vanilla and it
does not load my .Rprofile, but when I issue the command
update.packages() R downloads the packages as expected, but then seems
to load .Rprofile before compiling the packages sources. What am I
doing wrong?
kindest regards,

new help pages in R 2.10.0
Dear R-users,
I've just installed the last version of R (2.10.0) in Windows and found a completely new version of the help pages.
Basically, they now appear as a simple (even if slightly embellished) text file.
I tried to install it with a customized startup and realized that the old CHM files (the default for Windows up to 2.9.2) are not included anymore as a possible choice.
I don't

hetlp_type text doen't work on Ubuntu
Hi,
I' using Ubuntu 10.10/11.04 and on both of the systems help doesn't
work unless I set options(help_type="html"). I hate to change context
and help_type='html' distracts me. I want text based help inside
console. Where should I look to fix this problem?

Error w/ Start up Script
I noticed about a couple weeks ago that my R start up script starting showing the below errors, following the line "Type 'q()' to quit R"
Not sure what I did different and so far it hasn't caused major problems but kind of fear that it will.
Can you please help?
I also posted my Rprofile below.

This error can arise when getOption("width") is too small. 80 seems to be the
limit for me with R-3.3.2 on Windows.

starting html help for a package?
Dear all
Shouldn't this start the html help for the chosen package?

Instead, the text version is displayed in less (I believe). However, I
have no issues to start the html help with the following.

printing html help to the terminal
I'm trying to get help to print the help pages in html format to the
terminal. This is in order to be able to see the html help files remotely.
If I do
printURL = function(file) {a=readLines(url(file));cat(a,sep="\n")}
options(browser=printURL)
options(help_type="html")
then invoking help with
?print
gets stuck. I think what happens is that the web server run by R that

options("quit.with.no.save"), and Windows installer changes
I've just committed a couple of changes to R-devel related to requests
at userR about the Windows installer. The first of these affects all
platforms, but I've only tested it on Windows:
I added an option "quit.with.no.save". If TRUE, then the default
q("ask") prompt will not offer to save the workspace. This is in
response to the observation that new users who
