Internal error in 'ls' for pathological environments (PR#14035)
nchar(with(list(2),ls())) gives an internal error. This is of course
a peculiar call (no names in the list), but the error is not caught
cleanly.
It is not clear from the documentation whether with(list(2)...) is
allowable; if it is not, it should presumably give an error. If it is, then
ls
shouldn't have problems with the resulting environment.

Feature request: put NewEnvironment and R_NewhashedEnv into API
Hi,
I would like to be able to create new environments from package C
code. AFAICT, this isn't allowed since both NewEnvironment and
R_NewHashedEnv are declared in Defn.R.
If exposing this isn't controvertial, I would submit a patch.
However, I'm not sure where the declarations should go (Rdefines.h?)
and whether they need to change to Rf_*.

Value of SET_STRING_ELT() must be a 'CHARSXP' not a 'character' & 'getEncChar' must be called on a CHARSXP
Hello,
I have list of 600K lists, each sublist a list of two elements, the
first a character, the second a list of six named elements, some
characters some numrics.
LISTA (600K) (:= h)
|__ List of two elements
|__ Character
|__ Named List of 6 elements (characters and numerics)
This works,
sip <- lapply(h,function(r) r[[2]][['sip']])
but I wish to unlist this

Feature request: put NewEnvironment and R_NewhashedEnv into API
Hi,
as Seth Falcon in 2006, I also need to create new environments from package C code. Unfortunately, both NewEnvironment and R_NewHashedEnv are not yet part of the public API, if I understand correctly.
Is it planned to add at least one of these functions to the public API in the near future? May I submit a patch? Otherwise I would need to re-implement much of the functionality of R

Patch to fix small bug in do_External and do_dotcall
I've stumbled upon a small bug/inconsitency in do_External and do_dotcall:
Here's an example:

Assignment to string
The documentation for assignment says:
In all the assignment operator expressions, 'x' can be a name or
an expression defining a part of an object to be replaced (e.g.,
'z[[1]]'). A syntactic name does not need to be quoted, though it
can be (preferably by backticks).
But the implementation allows assignment to a character string (i.e. not a
name), which it

Modifying Sweave.sty to allow escapes with fancyvrb package in LaTeX
Dear Colleagues:
In an attempt to have things like # See page \pageref{this} inside
comments in R code chunks I have modified Sweave.sty as below. I have
followed fancyvrb's manual with regard to the use of the commandchars
argument. But when compiling with LaTeX (using attached test file) I
get a LaTeX error

Rgui maintains open file handles after Sweave error
Hello Folks,
When I run the document below through sweave, rgui.exe/rsession.exe
leaves a file handle open to the sweave-001.pdf graphic (as verified by
process explorer). Pdflatex.exe then crashes (with a Permission Denied
error) because the graphic file is locked.
This only seems to happen when there is an error in the sweave document.
When there are no errors, no file handles are left open.

server goes pathological
Ubuntu-10.04, x86, stock.
I''m running into a situation where a server goes pathological.
Basically, it becomes excruciatingly slow. I can get things through the
file system, but a simple file touch can take 6 - 12 hours.
Top shows various btrfs processes hard at work - typically 100% of a
cpu, (four cpu server), and the machine shows a load of just over 4.
Some flush-btrfs, some

OT: distribution of a pathological random variate
Folks,
I wonder if anything could be said about the distribution of a random variate x, where
x = N(0,1)/N(0,1)
Obviously x is pathological because it could be 0/0. If we exclude this point, so the set is {x/(0/0)}, does x have a well defined distribution? or does it exist a distribution that approximates x.
(The case could be generalized of course to N(mu1, sigma1)/N(mu2, sigma2) and one

Improve --inplace updates on pathological inputs
Hi,
I recently came across a situation where "rsync --inplace" performs very poorly. If both the source and destination files contain long sequences of identical blocks, but not necessarily in the same location, the sender can spend an inordinate amount of CPU time finding matching blocks.
In my case, I came across this problem while backing up multi-hundred-gigabyte MySQL database

Antwort: Re: Crash with Unicode and sub (PR#14114)
I don't know about the technicalities, but Peter Dalgaard said the
offending code also causes R to come to a stop using SUSE + WINE. Is it
possible to run that lot on top of valgrind? Of course, it will probably
take all day ...
If not, I have a clue which might help. The problem seems to lie in the
"sub" routine. In the original report I used

Package documentation and rd.sty
Hi all,
I've got a basic question regarding package documentation and rd.sty. I
wrote my first own package, and now I would like to place the documentation
into the appendix of another LaTex document. Seemingly I cannot simply
\usepackage{Rd}, as this will modify the page-settings of my document. Is
there a minimum style file which will just define the environments and
commands needed for

Sweave: Changing the background color, adding a border
Hi all,
I am using Sweave to produce a document. Unfortunately, I have to print
several copies and I can't print them in color. So I would like to
change the way of printing the code. I would like to print the code in a
box with a black borderline and a grey background (quite classic). Is it
possible to do it by changing some Schunk options?

Centering graphics by default in Sweave
Is there an elegant way to get Sweave to center graphics by default?
I'd like to use \centerline{\includegraphics{}} etc. to save some
vertical space that \begin{center} ... \end{center} uses, and I'd like
to avoid centering with each <<fig=T>>=
Thanks

Colors in Sweave
Hi list,
I was using Sweave and was wondering if anyone has had any luck changing the font colors of the code chunks. For instance, in my .Rnw preample I tried including:
===
\usepackage[usenames]{colors}
\definecolor{darkred}{rgb}{0.545,0,0}
\definecolor{midnightblue}{rgb}{0.098,0.098,0.439}
\DefineVerbatimEnvironment{Sinput}{Verbatim}{fontshape=sl,formatcom={\color{midnightblue}}}

Sweave/margin
Hi!
I am currently using Sweave for writing my bachelor thesis - and I have a
problem:
I am using a LaTeX style (report) with quite big margin spaces. The Sweave
generated LaTeX code "floats" into the margin - and it looks ugly. The text
is blocked and fine... then there comes some flattering code running over
the margin... and blocked text again.
Considering the LaTeX output, I guess

incoherent conversions from/to raw
i wonder about the following examples showing incoherence in how type
conversions are done in r:
x = TRUE
x[2] = as.raw(1)
# Error in x[2] = as.raw(1) :
# incompatible types (from raw to logical) in subassignment type fix
it seems that there is an attempt to coerce the raw value to logical
here, which fails, even though
as.logical(as.raw(1))
# TRUE
likewise,
x[2]
