Memory issues in "aggregate" (PR#5829)
Full_Name: Ed Borasky
Version: 1.8.1
OS: Windows XP Professional
Submission from: (NULL) (208.252.96.195)
R 1.8.1 seems to be running into a memory allocation problem in the "aggregate"
function. I have a rather large dataset (14 columns by 223,000 rows -- almost 40
megabytes) and a script that performs some processing on it. The system is a 768
MB Pentium 4. Here's the console

R 1.6.0 Solaris crash with xmalloc: out of virtual memory
[some de-capitalization of *SXP done manually by mailing
list maintainer ; the originally was caught as potential spam. MM]
I have a little R program that crashes with the message
xmalloc: out of virtual memory
The code has a repeat{} loop that watches the sizes of some files.
When there's an increase it updates things by reading the last 65
lines of each file, doing some

Memory problem ... Again
Happy new year to all;
A few days ago, I posted similar problem. At that time, I found out that our
R program had been 32-bit compiled, not 64-bit compiled. So the R program
has been re-installed in 64-bit and run the same job, reading in 150
Affymetrix U133A v2 CEL files and perform dChip processing. However, the
memory problem happened again. Since the amount of physical memory is 64GB,
I think

External special functions (SPECIALSXP)
Is it possible to define an external special function (SPECIALSXP)?
I'm trying to do some language-level work, and don't want my arguments
evaluated before they hit C.
It looks like the only way to define a SPECIALSXP is by using XX0 in
the `eval' field of R_FunTab; is there any way to make this applicable
to externally defined functions?

Memory problem
Dear all,
I have written a little R program to convert images. See below. Within the
loop over j (the filenames) memory consumption grows constantly. rm( ... )
inside the loop did not help. Memory does not grow if I remove the writeBin
statements between the two #-------- marks. But obviously this is not
solution I want...
Thanks for any advice.

Configuration of memory usage
Hi, all;
I know there has been a lot of discussions on memory usage in R.
However, I have some odd situation here. Basically, I have a rare
opportunity to run R in a system with 64GB memory without any limit on
memory usage for any person or process. However, I encountered the memory
problem error message like this:
Error: cannot allocate vector of size 594075 Kb
I got this error message while

Latent flaw in SEXPREC definition
There seems to be a latent flaw in the definition of struct SEXPREC
in Rinternals.h, which likely doesn't cause problems now, but could
if the relative sizes of data types changes.
The SEXPREC structure contains a union that includes a primsxp,
symsxp, etc, but not a vecsxp. However, in allocVector in memory.c,
zero-length vectors are allocated using allocSExpNonCons, which
appears to

Memory leak in R v1.5.1?
Hi,
I am trying to minimize a rather complex function of 5 parameters with
gafit and nlm. Besides some problems with both optimization algorithms
(with respect to consistantly generating similar results), I tried to
run this optimization about a hundred times for yet two other parameters.
Unfortunately, as the log below shows, during that batch process R
starts to eat up all my RAM,

More on bug 7924
Hi,
Again, sorry for the length of this post. Once I get my new office I
will get a website set up on my work machine and will simply post a
link to the log since I doubt many people are truly interested in
these logs.
To further analyze what is happening, I added my own routine in
main.c called DEBUG_SET_NAMED and then redefined the SET_NAMED macro
to use it and then rebuilt R.

how to call a function from C
Hi,
In Rcpp, we now have a "Function" class to encapsulate functions (they
cover all three kinds, but this may change).
To call the function, what we do is generate a call with the function as
the first node and then evaluate the call.
SEXP stats = PROTECT( R_FindNamespace( mkString( "stats") ) );
SEXP rnorm = PROTECT( findVarInFrame( stats, install( "rnorm") ) )

R data inspection under gdb?
Hi, everyone. I'm trying to debug an R-module, written in C, and I'm using
gdb for this.
How can I print "standard" R objects from within C code?
BTW, I'm familiar with the advice to use R_PV given in Writing R Extensions,
but it's not working for me. E.g., I get
(gdb) p R_PV(x)
$1 = void
and yet
(gdb) p *x
$2 = {sxpinfo = {type = 16, obj = 0, named = 0, gp = 0,

What is the fastest way to see what are in an RData file?
Currently, I load the RData file then ls() and str(). But loading the file
takes too long if the file is big. Most of the time, I only interested what
the variables are in the the file and the attributes of the variables (like
if it is a data.frame, matrix, what are the colnames/rownames, etc.)
I'm wondering if there is any facility in R to help me avoid loading the
whole file.

Feature Request: Multiline Comments
Hello,
Is it possible to extend the R lexer/parser to include multiline comments like
/*
acomment
*/
?
This way I can integrate emacs org-mode with my R code, so that I can
have a table of contents,
section folding, html-output of source etc.
e.g
/*
* Display Code
*/
#+BEGIN_SRC R
foo <- function(...){
stuff
}
#+end_src
and so on .
Thanks

Package is loaded but functions are not exported
Hello,
I wrote a package, which in the NAMESPACE file exports functions like this:
exportPattern("^\\rh")
On R-2.8 (Linux, 64), upon loading the package I have the rh functions present.
On R-2.10, Mac OS X, (32 bit), it builds, loads, but the functions are not
loaded, i.e the only function is rhyper (which is not from my package).
Is there something wrong with my package setup?

Lines between panels in lattice
Hello,
I have a multi-page display each consisting of two-panels above each
other.
I need to draw a line from the top panel to bottom panel. Using
current.vpTree()
i find that "plot1.panel.1.2.vp" and "plot1.panel.1.1.vp" are the top
and bottom ones respectively.
I am using the following code(inspired by Paul Murrell's R Graphics)
to draw a line.

Crash due to extreme example
Hello,
I was trying this bit of code (i know it is an extreme case)
g=function(r){
if(r==1)
return(list(x=1))
else
return(list(x=g(r-1)))
}
For z=g(500), the code runs but when I print z i.e
>> z
I get
<environment: R_GlobalEnv>
*** caught bus error ***
address 0x1, cause 'non-existent physical address'
Possible actions:

eval using a environment X but resultsin .GlobalEnv
Hello,
Suppose I have an expression, E, which accesses some variables present
in an environment V.
I do this via
eval(E,envir=V)
however all assignments end up in V. I would like the results of
assignments in E to end up in the .GlobalEnv ? Or at least the calling
environment.
Is there a quick way to this instead of iterating over all objects E
and assigning into .GlobalEnv?
Thank you

In C, a fast way to slice a vector?
Hello,
Suppose in the following code,
PROTECT(sr = R_tryEval( .... ))
sr is a RAWSXP vector. I wish to return another RAWSXP starting at
position 13 onwards (base=0).
I could create another RAWSXP of the correct length and then memcpy
the required bytes and length to this new one.
However is there a more efficient method?
