exec subdirectory of a package
Hello, WRE contains the following information about the "exec" subdirectory of a package : "Subdirectory exec could contain additional executables the package needs, typically scripts for interpreters such as the shell, Perl, or Tcl. This mechanism is currently used only by a very few packages, and still experimental." I think it would be useful to expand "very

Remove all spaces from a string so it can be used by assign()
Hi I have a string "56 Fe [1]" that I would like to use as a variable name by using "assign" however I think the spaces and brackets might be causing R some trouble. How can I change the string so that it just becomes 56Fe1 and can be used as a variable name. Thank You Kurt _________________________________________________________________ [[elided Hotmail spam]]

[Fwd: Re: Video demo of using svSocket with data.table]
Forwarded to R-Help, because I think it could interest people following this thread. Clearly, RServe and svSocket have different goals and very little overlap. How to show help in the same mode as where the commands is input?
Hi, In R command line, when I type "help(something)", it will always show the help in the different mode such that I don't see command lines anymore but just the help document. If I quit from the help mode, I will only see the command lines by not the help document. I would like the help document and command lines be show in the same mode. I'm wondering how to do so. Regards,

Why does the lexical analyzer drop comments ?
It happens in the token function in gram.c:     c = SkipSpace();     if (c == '#') c = SkipComment(); and then SkipComment goes like that: static int SkipComment(void) {     int c;     while ((c = xxgetc()) != '\n' && c != R_EOF) ;     if (c == R_EOF) EndOfFile = 2;     return c; } which effectively drops comments. Would it be possible to keep the information

Where to put source code?
I'm trying to move from Matlab to R, and I'm stuck even getting started. This sounds to me like the dumbest question in the world but... how does one put R source code in files? Over the last three days I've gone front to back through the Introduction to R and the R Language Definition, and while I'm excited that the language is so Lispish, none of what I read described how to

S4 dispatch and S3 "connection" objects
Hello, I'm trying to get S4 dispatch on S3 "connection" objects. So I do : setOldClass( "connection" ) and then : setGeneric( "bling", function(object) standardGeneric( "bling" ) ) setMethod( "bling", "connection", function(object) cat( "gotcha ", as.integer(object), "\n" ) ) but I get : f <- file(

parser 0.0-3 on CRAN
Hello, The version 0.0-3 of the parser package has been published to CRAN a few days ago. The package defines a parser for R code very similar to the "parse" function in base but organize the information differently, in a flat data frame. There is a more complete announcement in my blog: http://tr.im/vsK1 Romain -- Romain Francois Professional R Enthusiast +33(0) 6 28 91 30 30

split.data.frame
Hello, I very much enjoy "with" and "subset" semantics for data frames and was wondering if we could have something similar with split, basically by evaluating the second argument "with" the data frame : split.data.frame function(x, f, drop = FALSE, ...){ call <- match.call( ) fcall <- call( "with", data = call[["x"]],

combine UserDefinedDatabase and regular environments
Hello, Is it possible to have the effect of UserDefinedDatabase outside of "attached" environments ? Can I disguise an environment of the sys.frames() as a UserDefinedDatabase ? This seems to suggest that it might be possible : > f <- function(){ e <- environment(); class(e) <- "UserDefinedDatabase"; ff } > f() *** caught segfault *** address (nil),

Best R text editors?
Quick informal poll: what is everyone's favorite text editor for working with R? I'd like to hear from people who are using editors that have some level of direct R interface (e.g. Tinn-R, Komodo+SciViews). Thanks! --j -- Jonathan A. Package is loaded but functions are not exported
Hello, I wrote a package, which in the NAMESPACE file exports functions like this: exportPattern("^\\rh") On R-2.8 (Linux, 64), upon loading the package I have the rh functions present. On R-2.10, Mac OS X, (32 bit), it builds, loads, but the functions are not loaded, i.e the only function is rhyper (which is not from my package). Is there something wrong with my package setup?

Functions returning functions
Dear All: I have a question regarding the behavior of functions. Say I define a function that returns another function : A <- function(parameters) { # calculations w/ parameters returning 'y' tmpf <- function(x) { # function of 'y' } return(tmpf) } The value of the parameters are stored in an environment local to the function. Then I call x<- something

dbmail benchmarking
I thought I'd try benchmarking with dbmail (v2.2.4) to see how much slower a SQL backend could actually be. Skip to bottom for the conclusions. Originally I ran the tests with the databases being in XFS filesystem. MySQL's performance was horrible. It went 3-7x faster with ext3. MySQL 5.0.30 backend (innodb): ./imaptest clients=1 - append=100 seed=1 secs=30 msgs=1000000 logout=0

anyone using DBMail?
I am currently using Cyrus IMAPd, and been using it for a long time, the main reason being that I want an IMAP server with nice server-side filtering, which Cyrus provides via Sieve. Given that Sieve is integrated with Squirrelmail, all is good. Or is it? Cyrus IMAPd is powerful, but it's a complete mess to upgrade, either when upgrading the software per se, or when upgrading the whole

Hierarchy separator recommendation?
Dear dovecot list, I'm using Maildir as mailbox format. Is there any recommendation for the namespace hierarchy separator? Currently I didn't set any. So it is the default of dot '.' I'm switiching from a rather unknown IMAP Server called DBMail (http://www.dbmail.org/) Planning to synchronize the mailboxes via imapsync (https://github.com/imapsync/imapsync) Is there
