rgl.postscript() failure when saving a scene
Dear all,
I write to the community to know if other people
expierenced the same problem. I want to save a rgl
scene where I plotted a 3d cloud of spheres whose
radius is set proportional to a given variable and
coloured by another group variable and with 95%
ellipsoids for distribution of any group.
I had no problem at all for coding but I had two

shapes in rgl
Does anyone have a way of producing solid shapes other than spheres in
rgl? I am using rgl to produce a simple visualisation of a forest model
results using "lollipops". Its just a bit of fun, but as many of the
trees are pines I would like to depict their crowns as cones. If there
is a solution I need it to work under windows.
Here is the example.

advice on arguments
I have a general style question about R coding.
Suppose I'm writing a function (foo1) that calls other functions
(foo2, foo3, ...) which have complicated argument
lists (e.g. optim(), plot()), _and_
I may be calling several different functions in the body of
foo1. Since foo2 and foo3 have different sets of arguments, I
can't just use "..." ; I did write some code a while ago

transparent surface in rgl
Hi all
I am a complete newbie to this list (just subscribed) and a newcomer to
R (an S user from olden times). I have been using scatter3d to create a
3d scatter plot with surface. The graphic is created within the rgl
package and I have used rgl.postscript to export it so I can generate a
publication quality image. My problem is that the plotted surface is no

question on rgl.surface
I'd like to use rgl.surface (or some other function if more
appropriate) to create a horizontal and vertical transparent grey
slice (plane) running through both the x and y origins and extending
across the z axis, i.e. the 3-d equivalent of the normal 2-d
coordinate axes we are all familiar with. The examples for rgl.surface
are a bit more complex than what I need and I am having trouble

How to display an image on RGL plot?
Hi all.
It's been a long time since I wrote to this list. Glad to see the R project
well and working.
I am working with a 3D plot similar to this:
http://old.nabble.com/file/p26525177/rgl-device.png rgl-device.png
The underlying picture is a JPEG image, loaded with the rimage package and
coerced to the matrix.
Spheres denote control points, collected from this picture and must be

biplot package
Dears,
I've been learning biplot (Gabriel, 1971) and I found the function 'biplot', inside of the package 'stats',
useful but, a bit limited.
So, I'm thinking to start a colaborative package to enhance this methods to other multivariate methods. In this
way, I would like to start it, making public a new function (biplot.pca, still in development, but running)

rgl_081.708: rgl.snapshot fails, causing persistent problems
*Summary*: The latest Windows binary version of rgl_081.708 from
R-Forge has some problem that
causes rgl.snapshot() to fail, at least on my system.
Thereafter, *all* rgl 3D graphics are rendered without any text labels.
The last problem remains even after (a) removing rgl and re-installing
from CRAN, (b) re-starting
with a fresh installation of all of R 2.7.2.

rgl.snapshot only captures a small portion what's visible in the RGL device window on CentOS 7
Dear R-SIG-Fedora,
I'm finding that on CentOS 7, rgl.snapshot (a function in the R package rgl, which provides an R interface to the OpenGL 3-d graphics library) only captures a small portion what's visible in the RGL device window. This does not happen with the same R and rgl versions on CentOS 5.3 (see details below).
The maintainer of rgl, Duncan Murdoch, responded (see below) that

rgl.snapshot only captures a small portion what's visible in the RGL device window on CentOS 7
Tom,
Bingo!
I followed the instructions in the link below, which allowed me to install the nvidia driver, which fixed the original problem with rgl.snapshot.
Thanks very much for all your help.
I guess I'll file a bug in the CentOS Bug Tracker so that the nouveau driver might get fixed. I'll also post to R-help so someone with the same problem who only searches R-help and not this SIG

rgl.snapshot "failed"
Dear Roger Koenker,
I have had just the same problem (rgl.snapshot returns "failed") on my
Fedora Core 6 system.
It took me quite a while to figure out the solution, so I would like to
post it here to make others' lives easier.

rgl.snapshot "failed"
I've installed the rgl package on a Suse x86-64 machine (further
details below)
and it produces nice screen images. Unfortunately, rgl.snapshot
attempts to
make png files produces only the response "failed". For other
graphics png()
works fine, and capabilities indicates that it is there. If anyone
has a suggestion
of what might be explored at this point I'd be very

rgl.postscript generating pdf: floating xlab, font size, transparency
Hello,
I very much enjoy rgl! But when converting the screen output to pdf
using rgl.postscript I have encountered three problems:
(1) I don't seem to have control over font sizes and point sizes (of
added points) in the pdf output. I tried cex from "plot" but that
does not have an effect. Initially I got some plots where fonts and
especially points were far too small. But now

rgl: draw multiple ellipsoids
Dear list,
I'm trying to visualise some ellipsoidal shapes in 3D. Their position,
axes, and angular orientation can be arbitrary. I saw an ellipse3d
function in rgl; however it is heavily oriented towards the
statistical concept of ellipse of confidence, whilst I am just
concerned with the geometrical object.
Below is my current implementation. It is quite slow when creating
many shapes, so
