figure with inset
I am trying to plot a figure within a figure (an inset that shows a closeup of part of the data set). I have searched R-help and other sources but not found a solution. What I would like to do is (1) produce a plot (2) specify a window that will be used for the next plot (in inches or using the coordinate system of the plot produced in (1) (3) overlay a new plot in the window specified under (2)

RFC: Kerning, postscript() and pdf()
Ei-ji Nakama has pointed out (from another Japanese user, I believe) that postscript() and pdf() have not been handling kerning correctly, and this is a request for opinions about how we should correct it. Kerning is the adjustment of the spacing between letters from their natural width, so that for example 'Yo' is usually typeset with the o closer to the Y than 'Yl' would be.

Justification of dendrogram labels
Hi all, Can someone tell me how to justify (right or left) the labels on the branches of a dendrogram tree? I have produced a dendrogram via agnes and plotted it with pltree. The dendrogram terminal branch labels seem to be centre-justified by default and I was hoping to change this to left justification. Thanks, Duncan ***************************************** Dr. Duncan Mackay School of

OT (kinda): Justification for adding Asterisk to the business plan
Greetings all, I'm trying to build a justification case to get the firm I work for to start working with Asterisk more. How could I build this case? The argument I'm raising is that people need phones. PBX systems are too expensive for fewer options and less expansion capabilities. Leveraging Asterisk in the business plan would allow for more consulting revenue and resale

common axis label in multiple plot area
Hello A very short question: Using multiple plots with par(mfrow=c(3,3)), how can I get R to indicate one common y- and x-axis label? I tried to use text() in par, but this is then overwritten when I plot the graphs. -- Sebastian Leuzinger Institute of Botany, University of Basel Schönbeinstr. 6 CH-4056 Basel Ph. 0041 (0) 61 267 3511 fax 0041 (0) 61 2673504 email: Sebastian.Leuzinger@unibas.ch

Help: justification for Linux PDC vs Windows...
Hello, My IT department has implemented a samba PDC and now we are taking flack for it. Can anyone help me out with some good justifications for doing it this way vs the Microsoft way? Have a meeting about it in a short while... We wanted to do it because Linux is more secure and more stable. But there may be other good reasons and it would be good to know them. Or maybe it would be better

ggplot2 geom_bar label justification
Hi, I was trying to make a horizontal bar plot. The barplot works when the text labels are of reasonable length, but not if some of them are slightly long. I think the long ones get 'squeezed' by default before the plot is flipped and keep the skew after the flip. Is there a way I can get around this? In the code below, plot px looks just fine, but the labels get staggered in plot py.

Rotated, Right-Justified Labels for Shortened Tick Marks
Hello R-help, I'm trying to make a fairly simple plot axis that goes something like this: plot(-10:10,-10:10, yaxt='n') axis(side=2, las=1, hadj=1, tck=-.01, cex.axis=.6) ...but as you can see, the labels are not close enough to the y-axis (where I want them... to save space for publication). Can anybody help me figure out how to move these labels over the the right a bit?

[PATCH] xen-blk(front|back): Handle large physical sector disks
I accidentally realized today that any domU''s using the paravirt disk driver potentially suffer from poor performance when they get handed in a physical volume and partitioning is done inside the guest. The physical volume passed in has to be one that has the compat 512 logical sector size but hints its real sector size (eg. 4096) as physical sector size. In dom0 handling is correct and

shifting ticks to left or right
Hey list, Does anybody knows a command to centre the tick mark labels exactly between the tick points (right shift)? And then to exclude the last tick label on the right? I know one can shift them using the 'hadj' option in par. But I am wondering if there is a more convenient command! Thanks a lot!! Stefan [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Population pyramids
Hi, I hope somebody can help me with this issue: I am doing population pyramids using the barplot command, so in the left side I have male age structure and in the right side the female age structure. To plot the male age structure I put the data in negative numbers. Now, I want to change the sign in the bar plot in such way that I have no-sign numbers, both in left and right side of the graph. I

write data from function into external table
Dear list, My apologies if a solution / explanation to this already exists on the list, but it is difficult to assign it to a certain keyword. test<-c(1:3) testfct <- function(x) {test[1]<-100} test [1] 1 2 3 testfct(1) [1] 1 2 3 Basically, I would like to write data into an external table that the function does not know. Why is this not working / what alternatives exist? Thanks,

Tick label orientation
I had hoped that plot(c(0,24),c(0,-6),xlab="Time",ylab="Day", type="n", main="This Week",axes=FALSE) axis(2,at=0:(-6), labels = c("Sun","Mon","Tues","Wed","Thurs","Fri","Sat"),hadj=TRUE) axis(1,at=seq(0,24,4)) would give me horizontal tick labels. It doesn't. What would?

is there something like or() ?
hi, this may be trivial, but we can't seem to find anything adequate, (although there is a work around with match() ). We are looking for something along the lines of plot(table1[table1$var2==or("a","b","c","d"),"var1"]) would be handy, with the potential or() function leading to what plot(table1[table1$var2=="a" |

Xen PVM: Strange lockups when running PostgreSQL load
I am currently looking at a bug report[1] which is happening when a Xen PVM guest with multiple VCPUs is running a high IO database load (a test script is available in the bug report). In experimenting it seems that this happens (or is getting more likely) when the number of VCPUs is 8 or higher (though I have not tried 6, only 2 and 4), having autogroup enabled seems to make it more likely, too

Editor for Mac OSX
Dear R-list I am (forced) to change from Linux to Mac and am now looking for a new editor for R. I would like one that features a split window (console + editor) as well as syntax highlighting. Can anyone help? Especially the split-window feature does not seem to be easily available in the editors desribed on the R-help site, except Emacs, which I am reluctant to start using. I am on a MacBook Air

problems with starting R
When I try to start R from my desktop, an "information"-window pops up: "Fatal error: Invalid HOMEDRIVE". I already deleted and reinstalled the program, but the problem lasts. How can I solve this problem? I would be very glad, if you can give me a hint, what??s going wrong. Best regards Sabine Bader -- Sabine Bader Hamburger Str. 83 44135 Dortmund 0231/7950683

builtins name mangling in SPIR 2.0
I don't see any problem mangling it to be honest even though there seems to be only one prototype anyways. We could add restrict in as well.
