R-2.8.0 : get platform device with get(getOption("device"))
Hi,
I have a R-package that works fine with R 2.7.0 (it builds, checks and
installs) but not with R 2.8.0.
Running check in 2.8.0 gives the following output :
[...]
* checking examples ... ERROR
[...]
The error most likely occurred in:

postscript device on R-1.1.0
Am I the only one with this problem?

Error in old$command == "default" : comparison (1) is possible only for

The function postscript() is creates a list called "old". the function
wants to access old$command, but old does not have a component called
command.

Out of curiosity, what happened to this?
With 1.8.1 it returns:

getOption() versus Sys.getenv
Hi there,
I am trying to distinguish between getOption() and Sys.getenv(). My
understanding is that these are both used to set values for variables.
getOption is set something like this: option("var" = "A"). This can be
placed in an .Rprofile or at the top of script. They are called like this
getOption("var").
Environmental variables are set in the .Renviron file

Hi,
I have a failing unit test in my package tryCatchLog on the CRAN build infrastructure
(https://cran.r-project.org/web/checks/check_results_tryCatchLog.html)
with "R Under development (unstable) (2019-09-27 r77229)"
and the unit tests just ensures consistent behaviour of R (not of my package) as a precondition:

[ reached getOption("max.print") -- omitted 8178 rows ]]
Hi,
I have a weird thing I don¹t understand.
Here¹s what I did:
I read some data:
data=read.table("fileName²)
then I printed the data to the screen:
data
But it didn¹t finish:
lot¹s of data was written out, but not all of it...
Then it interrupted and said:
[ reached getOption("max.print") -- omitted 8178 rows ]]
Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to get to see all of my

example(..., ask=getOption("example.ask"))
Hi,
I wish to return to the topic "[Rd] example(ask = .) - default ?"
discussed in R-devel on May 1, 2006, because I think it is related to
my problem.
In one of my Rd examples I generate multiple (20-30!) PNG files using
png()/dev.off(). I noticed that I get a "Hit <Return> to see next
plot:" for each png() call, when calling example() [interactively].
The code for

Thanks a lot for pointing out the reason
(and yes, I am testing quite to stringent in this case - it's my old testing disease ;-)

Misuse of $<matn expressions>$ in Rd files
'Writing R Extensions' tells you that $ needs to be escaped in Rd files
outside \code and similar. So I was surprised to find that ca 80 CRAN
packages have constructions like (from ISwR)
\item{\code{folate}}{
a numeric vector, folate concentration ($\mu$g/l).
}
This does not render sensibly in non-latex conversions, and it is what we
have \eqn{} for.
That $ needs to be

Renaming Rplots.ps from BATCH scripts.
I often use R CMD BATCH to run my files (e.g. script.R), and get the
output recorded in script.Rout -- this is great. On my setup (R.2.3.0
on linux), if any plots are created, they get stored in Rplots.ps.
This can get confusing if I have several batch scripts in one
directory.
I've written a simple shell script to rename Rplots.ps to
e.g. script.Rout.ps so that later I can easily identify

More intensive checking of R help files
We have been working on handling Rd (R help) files with R rather than
Perl scripts. As part of that work, Duncan has written a parser which
has revealed many problems in package help files, and we have added
its checks to 'R CMD check' in the R-devel version of R.
You can see the results for CRAN packages as part of the daily check

How to infer default width and height for a device?
Hi.
GENERAL:
Is there a general method for inferring default device settings,
particularly 'width' and 'height', that works for all devices? AFAIK,
the answer is no, but there might be functions out there that I don't
know of.
POSTSCRIPT SPECIFIC:
If not, I'm considering implementing such a method myself. Is it
possible for R to infer the default 'width' and

The MinGW-w64 snapshots have moved back to gcc pre-4.4.4 (from

seem more stable. Currently the CRAN package check pages at
