bigmemory - extracting submatrix from big.matrix object
I am using the library(bigmemory) to handle large datasets, say 1 GB,
and facing following problems. Any hints from anybody can be helpful.
_Problem-1:

I am using "read.big.matrix" function to create a filebacked big matrix
of my data and get the following warning:

R-2.15.0 and Exporting Methods Converted To S4 Generic
Late to the show on this release, unfortunately.
One of our production packages no longer builds under R-2.15.0

exporting methods/classes
Dear R People:
I'm still struggling with sending methods and classes as part of
creating a new package.
Where does the .onLoad function go? Within R itself or in a file
in one of the new package directories?
Here are my latest efforts:

looking for adice on bigmemory framework with C++ and java interoperability
I work with problems that have rather large data requirements -- typically
a bunch of multigig arrays. Given how generous R is with using memory, the
only way for me to work with R has been to use bigmatrices from bigmemory
package. One thing that is missing a bit is interoperability of bigmatrices
with C++ and possibly java. What i mean by that is API that would allow

Imports/exports of S4 methods
I have a question about what to do in the following situation (please bear with
the setup):
Package A defines an S4 generic 'foo' and as well as S4 methods for 'foo' and has
exportMethods("foo")
in its NAMESPACE file.
Package B defines another method for 'foo' for class "bar" and has
importFrom(A, "foo")
exportMethods("foo")

namespace S3 and S4 generic imports cannot both be satisfied:
PkgA wishes to write a method for 'unique' on S4 class 'A'. ?Methods indicates
that one should

setMethod(unique, "A", unique.A)
Both S3 and S4 methods need to be exported in the NAMESPACE

AIC for heckit
Hi,
I have used the heckit function in micEcon. Now I
would like to evaluate the fit of the probit part of
the model but when I enter
AIC(sk$probit)
I get this error
Error in logLik(object) : no applicable method for
"logLik"
How can I then get the AIC for this model?
Side question: If you know - from the top of your
head - some link to readings dealing with evaluating

Overloading S4 methods
Dear all,
I am experiencing some problems with S4 method overloading. I have
defined a generic for graphics:plot, using
setGeneric("plot", useAsDefault = plot)
and with
importFrom('graphics', 'plot') and
exportMethods('plot') in the NAMESPACE file of pkg A.
I then proceed to define a method for signature c('myS4class',
'missing'). This works

Questions about name space directives
Hi,
I'm hoping to get some clarification of the intent of some of
directives used in NAMESPACE files.
1. Is import(somePkg) also intended to import all classes and methods
that are exported via exportClasses and exportMethods in somePkg?
I think import pulls in classes and methods, but it isn't clear
from the docs whether this is as intended.
2. What is exportMethods intended

split() bug? Inconsistent Windows/Linux behavior.
I didn't see anything on this in the bug reports, and a search of the
archives had lots of false positives when searching on "split" to be
helpful.
I don't view this as particularly interesting or useful, but wanted to
report it because I stumbled on it (and don't remember ever seeing
"invalid permissions" as part of a segfault).? Yes, I realize this is

huge data?
Hi Jay Emerson,
Our Intention is to primarily optimize "R" to utilize the Parallel
Processing Capabilities of CELL BE Processor.(has any work been done in this
area?)
We have huge pages(of size 1MB 16MB ) available in the system and as you
pointed out our data is also in the GB ranges. So the idea is if Vectors of
this huge size are allocated from Huge Pages the performance will

Hello ,
I can not get apply function to do what I want when doing stuff on rows.
Let's say I want to divide the rows of matrix by their mean, the below show
you get the same result weather you use 1 or 2, i.e. same result for columns
than for means..:(
Thanks a lot for the help,

bigmemory
To answer your first question about read.big.matrix(), we don't know what
your acc3.dat file is, but it doesn't appear to have been detected as a
standard file (like a CSV file) or -- perhaps -- doesn't even exist (or
doesn't exist in your current directory)?
