[Hivex] OS X and iconv
Hi all,
The linking problem I found yesterday appears to be because of the built-in iconv in OS X. So, this is a request for patch or pointers: What needs to happen with configure.ac or the iconv.m4 macro file to link an iconv library _besides_ the one in /usr/local/lib? That's the tl;dr, full explanation follows.
That library lacks the x86_64 architecture:

iconv detection on Irix 6.5
Samba 3.0.2 and earlier on Irix 6.5 haven't been detecting libiconv,
even when using the --with-libiconv directive.
I found it best to configure libiconv as,
./configure --prefix=/opt --libdir=/opt/lib32
because /opt/lib32 is in ldd's search path.
And before configuring Samba to make three changes to the configure
script to properly detect libiconv and build the test programs.

problems with iconv
I'm at wit's ends here and need some help.
I've downloaded and compiled iconv versions 1.13 and 1.14 -
libiconv.so.2.5.0 and libiconv.so.2.5.1 and copied the iconv all over,
replacing the native iconv on my Solaris machine.
Still when I try to run the configure I get:

Dimensions of svd V matrix
Hi,
I'm trying to do PCA on a n by p wide matrix (n < p), and I'd like to
get more principal components than there are rows. However, svd() only
returns a V matrix of with n columns (instead of p) unless the argument
nv=p is set (prcomp calls svd without setting it). Moreover, the
eigenvalues returned are always min(n, p) instead of p, even if nv is set:

Lapack error in Design:::ols
Hi,
I'm trying to use Frank Harrell's Design:::ols function to do regression
of y (numeric) on the interaction of two factors (x1 and x2), but Lapack

Compiling 3.4.0 on SPARC Solaris 9
I've been trying to compile Samba 3.4.0 on a Solaris 9 server. However,
when I run configure, it is only creating a Makefile-noincludes, not the
standard Makefile. Looking at the config.log file, there are lines that
suggest that it can't find the libiconv libraries. These are installed
(version 1.11) in /usr/local so I tried re-running configure with the
option --with-libiconv=/usr/local.

predict.prcomp: 'newdata' does not have the correct number of columns
Hi,
I'm doing PCA on wide matrices and I don't understand why calling
predict.prcomp on it throws an error:

> x2 <- matrix(rnorm(100), 5, 20)
> p <- prcomp(x1)

Symmetric Matrix classes
Hi,
I'd like to store large covariance matrices using Matrix classes.
dsyMatrix seems like the right one, but I want to specify just the
upper/lower triangle and diagonal and not have to instantiate a huge
n^2 vector just for the sake of having half of it ignored:
Dumb example:
M <- new("dsyMatrix", uplo="U", x=rnorm(1e4), Dim=as.integer(c(100, 100)))
diag(M) <- 1

[hivex] OS X, Fedora 17: iconv autotool inconsistency
Hello all,
I've been testing hivexml in OS X, and came across an inconsistency in
building.
Some while back, I hit a snag with iconv in OS X, where basically this
would happen when a hive of any sophistication (greater than
hivex/images/small) was processed:
>$ xml/hivexml images/large >test.xml
>dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _iconv_open

Conflict between octave3.0-headers and r-base-dev
Hi,
I'm using Ubuntu Hardy i386, and the R 2.7.1 Ubuntu packages from CRAN.
The CRAN r-base-dev package depends on refblas3-dev or atlas3-base-dev,
but octave3.0-headers depends on libblas-dev. The two blas packages seem
to conflict, so r-base-dev and octave3.0-headers can't be installed
together.
Is this a known issue?
Thanks,
Gad

S4 generic masking S3 generic when using namespace
Hi,
I have two example packages, test1 and test2, where the only code in
them is:
setGeneric("predict", function(object, ...) standardGeneric("predict"))
(get them from http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~gabraham/test1.tar and
http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~gabraham/test2.tar)
The difference between them is that first does not have a namespace, and
loads fine. The second has a namespace

I am trying to compile a 64bit version of R 2.7.0 on AIX 5.3. And I am
running into some troubles. I also try the latest version 2.7.1 and
get the very similar errors.
The machine info:

Installation using iconv from glibc
The R Installation and Administration manual section A.1 states that glibc should provide a suitable iconv function, but I can't get R's configure script to accept/validate iconv on a Linux platform I need to support using glibc 2.20.
Is glibc is actually compatible (and/or is gnu libiconv essentially the only path)?
If glibc should work, what should I check to troubleshoot my

[BUG] iconv detection in 3.0.5rc1
I've found that the inner loop for iconv detection in a lib32
subdirectory of the LOOK_DIR path doesn't work right. Here are the
problems I've noticed,
1) configure only tested lib32 on the first directory, /usr, this is
because ICONV_FOUND was set to "yes" on the try of /usr/local/lib and
never reset (if it should be) to "no" because all the conversion tests

Improving on Rice coding
Hello,
I am the author of the Bonk audio compression program... i've just been
looking at your comparrison table, and i noticed bonk gets marginally
better compression than Flac on some files (actually i was
rather surprised to see bonk on the list at all, it's not exactly high
profile :-) ).
Bonk in lossless mode is a pretty naive implementation of a predictive
coder, so the main

[Bridge] Question about VLANs, bridges and switches
I have a question about bridges, vlans and switches. We had been using
a bridge to provide filtering between our student labs and the main
network. All the filtering does is check that a known IP matches a known
MAC address, this stops students plugging in laptops and stealing an IP
address. (And yes, we know about the MAC spoofing issues too) The
connection was nice and simple,
