By() with method = spearman
I have a data set where I want the correlations between 2 variables
conditional on a students grade level.
This code works just fine.
by(tmp[,c('mtsc07', 'DCBASmathscoreSPRING')], tmp$Grade, cor,
use='complete', method='pearson')
However, this generates an error

bug? in stats::cor for use=complete.obs with NAs
Arrrrr,
I think I've found a bug in the behavior of the stats::cor function when
NAs are present, but in case I'm missing something, could you look over
this example and let me know what you think:
> a = c(1,3,NA,1,2)
> b = c(1,2,1,1,4)
> cor(a,b,method="spearman", use="complete.obs")

help("R_LIBS") brings up the wrong help file (PR#10475)
Doing
help("R_LIBS")
brings up a help file (the same one as help(library)),
but the help file doesn't mention R_LIBS.
It does have a link to .libPaths, which does document R_LIBS.
The quickest fix would be for help("R_LIBS") to bring up the .libPaths
help file.

getting informative error messages
Certain errors seem to generate messages that are less informative than
most -- they just tell you which function an error happened in, but
don't indicate which line or expression the error occurred in.
Here's a toy example:
> f <- function(x) {a <- 1; y <- x[list(1:3)]; b <- 2; return(y)}
> options(error=NULL)
> f(1:3)
Error in f(1:3) : invalid subscript type

Shouldn't the result be

I read through the help ?sprintf and didn't find anything that changed my expectation. What am I misunderstanding? I am using R-2.9.0 binary from CRAN on Windows XP Pro, and my session info is

comment causes browser() to exit (PR#9063)
I'm trying to step through some code using browser(),
executing one line at a time.
Unfortunately, whenever I execute a comment line, the browser exits.
I previously reported a similar problem with blank lines.
These problems are a strong incentive to write poor code
-- uncommented code with no blank lines to improve readability --
so that I can use browser() without it exiting at

embedFonts() does not embed fonts?
Dear helpers,
I'm trying out the embedFonts() to embed fonts into my pdf files.
However, when I inspect the new pdf with a program designed to look
for embedded fonts, I see that the fonts have in fact not been
embedded. Below are my calls.

plotting arrows with different colors and varying head size
Dear list,
I would like to plot arrows with different colors according to arrow length, and also (if
possible) with head size proportional to arrow length. The idea is to make a quiver-like plot of
matlab with wind speed data.
So far, I´ve been able to use different colors, but I need to find a more efficient way to recode
arrow length intervals into colors. On the contrary, I can't define

trouble printing from graphics device in R 2.7.2
Hi,
I've been using R for many years and have always tried to keep my R
version up to date, and when I switched from 2.7.1 to 2.7.2 I'm
suddenly having trouble printing from the graphics device. I have
Windows XP, and installed both versions of R from the binaries. If I
start 2.7.2 and simply do:
> plot(1:10)
