Why does Samba need a password and Windows doesn't
For both my FreeBSD and my Linux machine to access my WinXP machine I need to
supply the username and password. From the WinXP machine I can access both
the FreeBSD machine and the Linux machine directly, there is no pause for
username and password.
I would like to not use a password in both directions. If windows doesn't need
it why should Samba?
To make it easy on my pathetic

wine doesn't read ~/.wine/config
I got Wine release 20010326 from cvs and compiled and installed it with
./tools/wineinstall
I did some changes in ~/.wine/config (changed the path to my floppy
drive). But it seems that wine is not reading ~/.wine/config. It still
tries to reach the floppy drive through the old (wrong) path.
There is no $HOME/.winerc and no /etc/wine.conf or
/etc/local/etc/wine.conf file on my system.

Then I start "winbindd -d 10 -i" in a terminal window
Then I issue "wbinfo -u" and voila, all the users are being listed.
Then I issue "wbinfo -t" and it says: -- Secret

problem with glm(family=binomial) when some levels have only 0 proportion values
Hello everybody
I want to compare the proportions of germinated seeds (seed batches of
size 10) of three plant types (1,2,3) with a glm with binomial data
(following the method in Crawley: Statistics,an introduction using R,
p.247).
The problem seems to be that in two plant types (2,3) all plants have
proportions = 0.
I give you my data and the model I'm running:

Upgrading Xen 3 on SL 5 server with CentOS 5 and SL 5
I'm dealing with an old Xen 3 server, and badly need to update it and all the vm's on it to more contemporary operating systems. So far, so good!
Can the Xen server on CentOS 5 para-virtualized CentOS 6? And if not, I'm having real trouble getting a live cd or installation media to boot in full virtualization to do the update of the guests.
I'd normally start by updating the Xen

Curved arrows
I'm trying to draw an arrow with a curved shaft on the graph as a straight
one looks messy on a detailed graph. I've looked in arrows but it doesn't
seem to give an option. larrows doesn't look much more promising. I had a
look in the archive and couldn't find anything. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Paul

Paste expression in graph title
This was my initial attempt at creating a title on a graph of the R squared
value:
x<-rnorm(10)
y<-rnorm(10)
plot(x,y, main=paste(expression(R^2)," = ",round(summary(lm(y~
x))$r.squared, digits=3), sep=""))
I've read various other posts that say expression needs to be taken outside
the paste, but I can't seem to get it work as the following fails

Read in dataset without saving it
A simple question - I have a small dataset to read in and want to copy and
paste part from Excel and paste it into an R script file without creating
more files saving it as a .txt/.csv and then reading that in. I want to
read in 3 columns e.g.
1 2.5 3.4
1 2.3 3.1
1 2.6 3.9
2 2.9 2.8
2 2.6 2.9
2 2.7 2.9
3 2.3 3.3
3 2.4 3.0
3 2.7 3.2
I thought I could use scan() but don't know how to extend it

NAs are not allowed in subscripted assignments
I'm trying to assign NAs to values that satisfy certain conditions (more
complex than shown below) and it gives the right result, but breaks the loop
having done the first one viz:
new<-c(rep(5,4),6)
for (i in 1:6)
{new[new[i]>5.5][i]<-NA}
gives the correct result, though an error message appears which causes a
break if it's in a loop. If I can get rid of the error message and
