New package connectedness
Dear R users,
I would like to announce a new package connectedness on CRAN.
connectedness can be used to identify disconnected sets. It contains
functions to find, plot and subset disconnected sets in a two-way
classification without interaction.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you find a bug (possibly with a
patch) or you have any comments.

New upload of connectedness
Hello!
I have uploaded update (0.2-1) for connectedness.
NEWS?
o NA's in either x or y are not removed by default, but only when
drop=TRUE. Subset method gains dropNA=NULL argument due to
this. Now subset arguments are properly placed after '...'. 2006-08-08
o Added unit tests. 2006-08-08
o Removed connectedness.package.Rd as it is not really needed
here. 2006-08-08

[semi-OT] Using fortune() in an email signature
Hello, As you can see from my signature in this message, I use the R
fortune function to generate a fortune, which is then fed to the
signature program, which constructs a named pipe containing the
fortune-bearing sig, which is then included in mail messages. The
problem is that it's got extraneous junk in it and I can't figure out
how to get rid of it. This is the command that generates

I thought John Nash's comment below was profound and a possible

reference for a fortune quote
Hi, there is a quote in the fortunes package:
To paraphrase provocatively, `machine learning is statistics minus any
checking
of models and assumptions'.
-- Brian D. Ripley (about the difference between machine learning and
statistics)
useR! 2004, Vienna (May 2004)
Was this statement made in a presentation? If so, would it be possible
to get a reference for the presentation?

Informal discussion group about R
I've started a "tribe" for discussing R and
sharing scripts. Tribe.net is one of the popular
on-line social communities, like "Friendster".
Visit and see if it is a forum that you find useful.
To join the "tribe" you will need to register with
Tribe.net.
I hope it will be of help to newbies, although I'm
new to R myself.

I don't see what's missing in my statements to add rows to a data frame
and someone else will probably see what needs to be added to the statements.
The data frame has this structure (without any data):

$ INFRACLASS : chr
$ SUPERORDER : chr

Yes another "I can't open port 53 for Bind DNS"
Hi,
It's just past 3am and for the past 6 hours I've been
configuring a secondary name server to replace one that just crashed.
My problem appears to be that port 53 is not open for some reason on my
server even though I have this:
[root at tribe etc]# netstat -an | grep ":53 "

How to get fortunes in R
Have you installed the fortunes package? From within R you can go
install.packages("fortunes")
If you have already installed it then there is something deeper going on.

"new" package fortunes 1.0-3
Dear useRs,
I used the summer months to work on all of my packages,
and so this is the first of a sequence of announcements
of "new" or updated packages. The "new" packages are new
in the sense that previous versions had been on CRAN for
some months but hadn't been announced to the R community
via this list until now.
All packages are available from the CRAN master site
