R CMD check testing environment
I can't tell from the docs ("Writing R Extensions" 1.9.1) exactly what
environment the tests, examples, and vignettes that R CMD check tries to
run are in.
In particular:
1) how do I get the package loaded?
2) how do I access data in the data/ directory?
3) where is the material in the other directories? (e.g., has inst/
material been installed? where?)
Apparently (section 1.3)

Return function from function with minimal environment
Hi,
this relates to the question "How to set a former environment?" asked
yesterday. What is the best way to to return a function with a
minimal environment from a function? Here is a dummy example:
foo <- function(huge) {
scale <- mean(huge)
function(x) { scale * x }
}
fcn <- foo(1:10e5)
The problem with this approach is that the environment of 'fcn' does

bug: sticky symbol refs? (PR#9555)
Hello. What happens in the following is that I create two simple functions, f and g, on the workspace. Then I
replace g. When I then call f, it uses the old version of g. Now clearly, the circumstances for this to happen
must be quite special and rare. But I'd say they're not pathological. It seems to require two things: 1) masked versions
of f and g on a search position lower down the

Large discrepancies in the same object being saved to .RData
Hi developers,
After some investigation I have found there can be large discrepancies in the same object being saved as an external "xx.RData" file. The immediate repercussion of this is the possible increased size of your .RData workspace for no apparent reason.
The function and its three scenarios below highlight these discrepancies. Note that the object being returned is exactly

S4 objects in the data directory
Hi
[R-2.10.0; suse linux]
I am having difficulty creating S4 objects in the data directory of a
package. I want
to create a bunch of simple S4 objects for use in the examples section
of the Rd files.
It says in R-exts that:
" R code should be ?self-sufficient? and not make use of extra
functionality provided by the package, so that the data file can also be
used without having to load

LM/GLM can't find weights vector from within a function (PR#13735)
Full_Name: Alberto Gaidys
Version: 2.9.0
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.7
Submission from: (NULL) (201.81.185.155)
When calling LM or GLM from within a function, R gives a message error that it
can't find the specified weights object "Erro em eval(expr, envir, enclos) :
objeto 'W' n?o encontrado" (Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : object 'W' not
found).

using tcltk in R under ESS/XEmacs on Windows
Sorry for the cross-post. Not sure where the problem is...
A while back I posted an R function to R-help:
cd <- function (dir = tclvalue(tkchooseDirectory()), saveOld = FALSE,
loadNew = TRUE) {
stopifnot(require(tcltk))
if (saveOld)
save.image(compress = TRUE)
setwd(dir)
rm(list = ls(all = TRUE, envir = .GlobalEnv), envir = .GlobalEnv)

double-click in RData file versus load( file )
hello all,
when I start up the R and I execute o follow code:

> ls()
[1] "test_x" "x"
> setwd('C:\\R\\etc')
> save.image('TEST.RData')

difficulties with the save.image() function
Dear list,
I've had difficulty saving my workspace to an .RData file.
This causes considerable frustration as it means that I have to regenerate
my analysis every time I want to update it. For microarray data in
particular, this can be quite time consuming.
I'm saving my data to a network folder on my system in Windows XP, something
like an "H:\" drive or a "P:\"

I've been running some rather long MCMC chains, which occasionally crash,

using step function in functions
Help!
I am a new R user. It has been slow getting up to speed, but definitely
rewarding. I have come up against a problem I can't handle. I would
very much appreciate any help.
I am writing a vector auto regression (VAR) function that utilizes existing
R statistical functions. I would like to use the step function to do
step-wise elimination on each univariate time series model. No

Tip: Working directory in titlebar
I hope others may find this useful. I use R in many different
directories. By adding the following line to the .Rprofile file:
utils:::setWindowTitle(paste("-",getwd()))
the titlebar of each R instance shows the directory from which it was
started. I have tested this with rterm.exe and rgui.exe under Windows
and with RECENT versions of R only.

Cannot re-start R after bus error
Hi,
I ran a program that was exhausting the (unix) server's available memory. I got a bus error and then chose to save and quit workspace (option 4).
That may not have been a smart idea - when I try to use R now, I get the error message:
Error in load(name, envir = .GlobalEnv) :
ReadItem: unknown type 0, perhaps written by later version of R
Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in

"could not find function" in R CMD check
During R CMD check I get this:

Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : could not find function

The check aborts there. readingError is a function I just added; for
reference

randomness using runif
I'm working on a problem where I'm introducing random error and have
been using the built in function runif to provide that random error.
However, I realized that I seem to be getting some unexpected behavior
out of the function and was hoping someone could share some insight.
I don't know the runif algorithm at all, but from the behavior I'm
seeing, it seems that whenever I open
