Process to both write to and read from (pipe/fork)?
Dear all,
I would like to start a process from an R program in such a way that
I can both feed input into the process and read the process's output.
It seems that in R, I can have a pipe for writing into another process's
input or a pipe for reading from another process's output, but not both.
Doing both necessitates forking, such that the child can start the
external process and

VERY TINY question: missing function to clear the console?
Hi,
for presentation purposes I would like to clear to whole console
window (like in a UNIX terminal: 'clear').
Is there such a function?
If not, I could image that is not too hard to write such a function.
Cheers,
Hans

A lot of zombie processes on Debian 9
Hello,
I've compiled Samba 4.7 from repository using a Debian 9 machine and I've
noticed that the system started to create zombie processes of samba:
# ps aux |grep "Z"
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
root 502 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 13:01 0:00 [samba]

A lot of zombie processes on Debian 9
Can you try with this systemd unit file.
Restarting does not close all prosesses with that one.
( you need : ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID )
Jessie used probely sysv and not systemd, which should explain why there are so many zombies.

"Pipelining" programs in R
Hello...
I would like to use R for 'pipelining' data among several programs. I'm
wondering how I can use R to call another program, feed that program a set
of parameters, and retrieve the output.
E.g., I have an executable that, when opened, prompts the user to enter a
set of parameters. The program then executes & prompts the user for the
name of an output file. I need to

How allocate STRSXP outside of gc
Hi,
I am trying to figure a way to allocate a string SEXP so that gc() won't
ever collect it.
Here is a little bit of a background. Suppose I want to write a
.Call-callable function that upon each call returns the same value, say
mkChar("foo"):
SEXP getFoo() {
return mkChar("foo");
}
The above implementation doesn't take advantage of the fact that

R 2.1.0 scheduled for April 18
The release schedule has now been set with a release date on April 18.
The detailed procedure can be found at http://developer.r-project.org/
(it is not quite there yet, but will appear after a short propagation
delay.)
The main point for non-developers is that we start making alpha
tarballs on March 21 and beta tarballs on April 4. Only very simple
and/or critical bugs are fixed in the last

I have used Sweave a lot the latest year, but never really used any long

If I have code which look like this

Plot timer in a for loop
Hello,
This code works fine but is so fast I can't see anything but the last plot.
for (i in nrow(X)){
plot(as.numeric(d[i,])) }
I'd like to view a plot every 500 milliseconds, nrow(X) = 400. How?
Thanks

Defunct / zombie AGI after some execution time
Hello,
We are running Asterisk-1.0.12 in a CentOS 4-4.2 system, kernel
2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.
We have some custom AGI, and when we launch Asterisk the system works fine.
But **after some time**, each AGI execution generates a zombie <defunct> process.
We believe that it's not a problem in the AGI code, because Asterisk+AGI is
working fine in the first "n" minutes/hours. This

Precision
How precise is R numerically? For example I
wrote the following function for calculating
the volume of the ball inscribed in the
unit cube in m dimensions. In order to see what
happens in 40 dimensions, I created an output
of 24 digits. But how many are precise?
Thanks

ts() defunct in R 2.5.0?
Hi!
I have written an R-package
(http://tocsy.agnld.uni-potsdam.de/wavelets/index.html) in R 2.4.1
that requires the ts() function. Users using R 2.5.0 now have a
problem installing this package. I checked the package using R 2.5.0:

slug of zombies
after booting a CentOS 4.2 system
I have a bunch of zombies...
root 2828 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 14:41 0:00 [chvt]
<defunct>
My read from googling this is chvt stems from something that involves a
shell.
They ***may*** have been created from my attempts to start mysqld which
isn't working (I will start another thread) but no efforts to kill them
off are working...

Printing integers in R "as is"
Hi,
I am using the following command to print to a file (I omitted the file
details):
cat( paste( paste(orientation, start, end, names,"\n"), paste(start, end,
"exon\n"), sep=""))
where "orientation" and "names" are character vectors and "start" and
"end" are integer vectors.
The problem is that R coerce the integer vectors

Using a number as a name to access a list
Hi
Dumb question time again, for which I apologise.
I have a variable that contains the following numerical text "04010".
This is the name to access a list:
> as.list(KEGGPATHID2NAME)$"04010"
[1] "MAPK signaling pathway"
Marvellous! Except I want to do that when "04010" is assigned to a
variable called path and I can't figure out how to do it!

Multiple smbd processes generated
We have an occasional problem which manifests with multiple processes
being created for a particular user. For example, for a user "xy004":

xy004 9426 0.0 0.0 5.99M 0K ?? IW 11:52:18 0:03.68 smbd
