Linking to lapack
Hello all.
I'm developing a package for R holding a Gibbs sampler, which tends to have
better performance when written in C than in R.
During each iteration in the Gibbs sampler, I need the inverse of a
symmetric matrix.
For this, I wish to use lapack, as is concisely suggested in "Writing R
extensions", since this will have better performance than I could ever write
myself.

promptClass misses methods
I've had repeated problems with promptClass missing methods, usually
telling me a class has no methods when it does.
In my current case, I've defined an S4 class "mspathCoefficients" with
a print method
setMethod("print", signature(x="mspathCoefficients"), function(x, ...)
{ # etc
The file promptClass creates has no methods in it.

Calling C in R in Windows 64 bit
Dear developers,
I am trying to run some C/ Fortran code in R. Although I have experience with that in Windows (Vista) 32 bit, I could not succeed in 64 bit. I downloaded the following:
- R 2.12.0
- Rtools 212
- miktex 2.9
- inno setup 5
-Afterwards, I changed the path as:
?C:\Program Files\R\R-2.12.0\bin;C:\Rtools\bin;C:\Rtools\MinGW64\bin;C:\Program Files\HTML Help Workshop;C:\Program Files

combine_factor to empty level
ID: T8dfe471e360ac80264c6c
Dear,
I'm using R 2.8.1 with the package reshape version 0.8.2 .
It seems that the combine_factor function has problems with combining levels to
an empty level:
#EXAMPLE WORKING
test<-sample(c(1:10),1000,replace=T)
testf<-factor(test, c(1:10), LETTERS[1:10])
table(testf,exclude=NULL)
testc<-combine_factor(testf, c(1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,2))

Changing "..." inside a function: impossible? desirable?
This is was something like a request for your comments, thoughts
on the topic...
Many of you will know that the "..." (aka \dots) argument is
very useful for passing ``further graphical parameters'',
but can be a pain when itself is passed to too many plotting
functions inside your own function.
An artificial example being
myplot <- function(x,y, ...) {
plot(0:1, 0:1,

Equivalent of match for data.frame
Dear R-users,
I am translating a S script into R and having some troubles with the
match function. This function appears to work with vector and data.frame
in S, but not in R, e.g.:
a <- rep((1:4), each = 10)
b <- rep((1:10), times = 4)
mydf <- data.frame(a,b)
myarg <- mydf[1,]
match(myarg, mydf)
# S returns 1 but R returns NA NA
I guess one could use match(interaction(myarg),

processing all files with certain extension in a directory
Hi all,
I'm trying to process all files with a certain extension "*.ext" in a
directory like this:
> R --slave --args /my/dir < dir_plot.r
where I then I want to do something like:
myarg <- commandArgs()
inputdir <- myarg[length(myarg)]
print(inputdir)
"for file with extension "*.ext in inputdir"
do
data = process.data(file)

Re ading multiple Excel 2007 files with a loop
I have several hundred Excel 2007 data files in a folder. I would like to
read every file in a single given folder using a loop.
I have searched the FAQ, the forum archives here, other or older R boards
and the R Import / Export documentation, and have asked some very
knowledgeable R users without learning of a solution. I hope someone here
can help.
I understand that the most common

Is it possible to define a function's arguments via a wildcard in 'substitute()'?
Dear List,
just out of pure curiosity: is it possible to define a function via
'substitute()' such that the function's formal arguments are specified
by a "wildcard" that is substituted when the expression is evaluated?
Simple example:
x.args <- formals("data.frame")
x.body <- expression(
out <- myArg + 100,
return(out)
)
expr <-

How to convert List object to function arguments?
Dear R gurus,
I have a function "goftests" that receives the following arguments:
* a vector "x" of data values;
* a distribution name "dist";
* the dots list ("...") containing a list a parameters to pass to CDF
function;
and calls several goodness-of-fit tests on the given data values against
the given distribution.
That is:

distance coefficient for amatrix with ngative valus
Hi,
I need to run a PCoA (PCO) for a data set wich has both positive and negative values for variables. I could not find any distancecoefficient other than euclidean distace running for the data set. Are there any other coefficient works with negtive values.Also I cannot get summary out put (the eigen values) for PCO as for PCA.
Thanks.

Proper way to document print( ) functions
Frequently we have a print method, say print.myclass, that has a variety of arguments. If in the .Rd file I say
\usage{
\method{print}{myclass}(x, myarg)
}
I get a warning when running R CMD chk:
* checking generic/method consistency ... WARNING
print:
function(x, ...)
print.myclass:
function(x, myarg)
What is the proper way to handle this?
Thanks

write.dcf/read.dcf cycle converts missing entry to "NA" (PR#9796)
Full_Name: Bill Dunlap
Version: 2.5.0
OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3 (Taroon Update 6)
Submission from: (NULL) (24.17.60.30)
If you read a dcf file with read.dcf(file,fields=c("Field",...))
and the file does not contain the desired field "Field",
read.dcf puts a character NA for that entry in its output
matrix. If you then call write.dcf, passing it the output

duplication regression (?)
Below is an example of output that changed as a result of r64970. I
did not see any NEWS item suggesting this change is expected.
Note that the example is contrived and I don't have a use case for it.
I stumbled across it when playing with recent changes in R relating to
duplication. Does the example use undefined syntax?

users and groups in a samba domain
I'm currently running Samba 2.2.8a as a NT-style domain server. I have a few different
questions regarding this setup. First, how can I add samba users to groups so that I can
specify 'DOMAIN\Group' in the permissions for a particular share on an XP machine attached
to the domain? Also, how can I set account types other than admin and not-admin for use

(PR#9796) write.dcf/read.dcf cycle converts missing entry
BIll,
Thanks.
I am seeing some problems here, for example when all the fields are
missing, or all the fields in a row are missing. I've fixes for those,
and will commit to R-devel shortly.

using save() to work with objects that exceed memory capacity
Context: I'm relatively new to R and am working with very large datasets.
General problem: If working on a dataset requires that I produce more than
two objects of roughly the size of the dataset, R quickly uses up its
available memory and slows to a virtual halt.
My tentative solution: To save and remove objects as they're created, and
load them when I need them. To do this I'm

Matrix problem to extract animal associations
Dear List,
I have been trying to extract associations from a matrix whereby individual locations are within a certain distance threshold from one another.
I have been able to extract those individuals where there is 'no interaction' (i.e. where these individuals are not within a specified distance threshold from another individual) and give these individuals a unique Group ID containing

to disappear just fine for me)? I am running Xen 2.0 (fairly up-to-date).
